5.0 étoiles sur 5 Superb. Precisely what it claims to be. 12 septembre 2011

I'm impressed with Lil Rev. A skilled musician, he has a way of making something difficult so eloquent, so simple. That is the mark of a skilled teacher. This book fits that mold.

I'm a ukulele player of about 6 months. I have the basic chords down, and have learned some simple strums. Lil Rev's DVD (Hal Leonard ukulele DVD) helped immensely in that regard. Now, along comes this great book. Blues and jazz and vamps and turn-arounds. And, even at this economical price, it has an included CD.

I find it to be precisely what I need at this stage in my training. If you can read simple uke-guitar tabs, you can use this book. Doing some of these bluesy licks, which are the basis of rock and roll, can make you seem like a pro. Just stir in your own strumming patterns, and repeat.

I have books on tabs for famous songs, and have done the online chords for famous uke songs available for free. But, I have to say, the repetition of these 3-4 chord licks, plus plenty of picking samples, is a lesson unto itself. It is teaching me the pairings of certain notes and chords with one another (e.g A, Dm, Em) that will stick with me as I move forward in my learning, without the pain of too much theory. I respectfully disagree with another reviewer of this book: even if one were an accomplished ukulele player, to work through the riffs in this book is sure to reveal some new combinations. And for the price, which is remarkably low, this book is worth every penny. My son is an experienced (five years of lessons) guitarist, and he could use the chords and riffs (with guitar fingering, of course) to pound out some neat sounding blues and rock basic structures--even he found this book fun and educational.

My son takes guitar lesson at about fifteen bucks for a half hour. For about that price, this book and CD will have you learning for weeks and weeks. If one were to learn one of these 101 samples daily for 101 days, in less than four months, they'd be a significantly betyter uke player. That's my goal, and I thank the author of this book, Lil Rev, for the lesson.

Highly recommended. !!

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Almost useless and big disappointment! 29 janvier 2012

Took a chance on this after glowing reviews here, turned out to be a total waste of money. There are no chord charts ANYWHERE in the book, so unless you already know how to make B flat minor 7th and related progressions you are on your own. The included CD, which was the real draw, has only a single run through of each track at speed, doesn't break down anything and you really can't learn from that either. If the publisher had put as much effort into the contents as the slick cover photo it might have value. Definitely not for beginners and if you're advanced enough to already read music and play advanced fingerstyle then why would you bother with this? And this "book" (more like pamphlet) is only 45 pages long anyway! Only getting one star because the ratings cant go lower. Total rip off.

I was disappointed. I expected more explanation of where and how to use the licks
in context. Some of them were too simple to bear inclusion, others left you feeling that the lick was incomplete. It really was pretty basic and not much use
for a high end intermediate player.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 love the collection of licks 13 novembre 2012

I really like it that there are so many different licks. And it tells who used the licks.
Other peoples complaints dont seem relevant to me. I guess I didn't expect much from the CD. This book is good for those who can "be your own teacher" and don't need their hand held. The tab is there, isn't that enough?
If you need more you can use this as a guide what to look for on you tube.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Fantastic resource! Just wish it had more variety... 31 décembre 2013

First, let me state this: the negative reviews are exactly correct in that this book is full of licks with very little suggestions on how to use them. Let me suggest, however, that if you need those suggestions then this book isn't for you in the first place.

This book is for the intermediate-advanced uke player who is trying to build skills towards solos and jamming with others. For that player these licks are invaluable. If you find yourself playing around with chord sequences from multiple songs you know and stringing them together into one continuous line to play with then this book is absolutely for you. If you find yourself trying to move beyond playing or plucking just the chords and into adding a melody or harmony line to the playing then this book is for you. It's full of useful tools for your melodic toolbox, but it expects that you are going to use the tools yourself, not be shown how to use them. It's strongly recommended in the book that you learn how to play the licks in various keys and take them up or down the neck. These exercises will undoubtedly make you a better player, but there are no exercise charts or schedules for you to do so; you need to be able to make yourself practice these. (...although you have to convince yourself to practice in the first place, right?)

For the player who is trying to increase their mastery of the uke this book is fantastic. For the player who just wants a song book this book is definitely not a good choice.

...but my one gripe? There are LOTS of blues and country licks, but not as many boogie, jazz-specific, or rock licks. In fact, there are blues licks in almost every letter step up the scale (and several chromatic steps) and an enormous quantity of country licks, but only a few pages devoted to other styles. While many of these can certainly be used in other styles, it is left to the reader to figure out which ones, instead of making it easy to focus on a section of licks devoted to the style you're most trying to learn. While I have no problem being given tools and told that I should teach myself how to use them, it's mildly irritating to be told that out of two huge (and well-labelled) toolboxes (and one mixed rummage drawer) that there are tools for other toolboxes, but not be shown which ones until you pull each tool out one by one to look at it.
