HASH(0x9aad2dbc) étoiles sur 5 Beethoven with a bow tie 5 octobre 2009
Par Bogdan Petculescu - Publié sur
The French pianist of Italian origin Aldo Ciccolini, well-known as the foremost interpreter of Erik Satie, recorded the complete Beethoven piano sonatas for the Bongiovanni label in the nineties; this edition, coming from the Swiss label Cascavelle, brings together all those ten CDs in a stylish wallet box.

The CDs are organized as micro-recitals, usually containing early as well as middle and late period sonatas.

For those who like their Beethoven raw there is no need to read further - this set is probably not their cup of tea and for some may be even shocking. Refinement, intellectualism, and opposition to the fads of the day are the keys here.

Ciccolini is, pure and simple, a magician. Who else could have transformed Beethoven's impulsive movements into majestic fireworks? Tormented passions into songs of sheer beauty? Mercurial ebbs and flows into a dance-like harmony? And all these are done with the magisterial technique of an iconoclast of an Old World sort, of whom the liner notes say, "He has, through his teachers, inherited the teachings of Ferrucio Busoni and Franz Liszt." Indeed.

This is not the Beethoven you knew: it's a highly distilled art, a set of piano sonatas as you've never heard them - and you should.

I frequently listen to this set. I also purchased it from France like one of the other reviewers. I tried to get Abeille music to send it to me here in America, but they would not do it from the Amazon site in France. It is kind of wierd because I have purchased a number of items from them on US under the store name Fabulous CD. Under "Fabulous CD," there service was very reliable and the prices very reasonable. I even explained to them in an email that they frequently send items to me under the name "Fabulous CD" on, but they would not change their minds. That did not stop me. I was able to get the set from French Amazon by another supplier.

The recording quality is good, but not fine. It was originally recorded by Bongiovanni of Italy (I have seen the discs sold individually on Amazon marketplace and even saw it once as a set on Bongiovanni on marketplace. Bongiovanni frequently records Italian operas by lesser known composers and some rarely performed operas by composers from other European countries performed in live productions produced in regional Italian theaters. The recording quality of those productions is often less than perfect, but they produce unusual things so we must be thankful at some level. Cascavelle simply licensed these Beethoven Sonata recordings. Cascavelle offers the complete set by a wonderful pianist at a very reasonable price. Titles on Cascavelle are often difficult to obtain because general distribution is not reliable.

I think that Ciccolini's interpretations are willful and very individual, but he is a pianist of real taste and many years of life and experience. These interpretations are unusual, but they are easy to live with. They are not always as polished or perfect as some new recordings of the Beethoven Sonatas like the new set by Andre de Groote. They are more middle of the road interpretations on a beautiful piano and in excellent sound. You can say the same thing about Peter Takacs new recordings of Beethoven piano sonatas. The sound of the recording and the piano are terrific. Both the Takacs and De Groote sets are worth owning. The De Groote recordings are quite inexpensive. Ciccolini's recordings are not as beautiful on the surface, but despite all of the complete cycle recordings that I have (lots), I keep Ciccolini's on my Ipod. I listen to them alot.

If you are interested, get them now.
