Description de l'ouvrage

25 mai 2011

The exponential explosion of images and videos concerns everybody's common life, since this media is now present everywhere and in all human activities. Scientists, artists and engineers, in any field, need to be aware of the basic mechanisms that allow them to understand how images are essentially information carriers. Images bear a strong evocative power because their perception quickly brings into mind a number of related pictorial contents of past experiences and even of abstract concepts like pleasure, attraction or aversion.

This book analyzes the visual hints, thanks to which images are generally interpreted, processed and exploited both by humans and computer programs.

  • Comprehensive introductory text
  • Introduces the reader to the large world of imagery on which many human activities are based, from politics to entertainment, from technical reports to artistic creations
  • Provides a unified framework where both biological and artificial vision are discussed through visual cues, through the role of contexts and the available multi-channels to deliver information

Biographie de l'auteur

Virginio Cantoni received the Laurea (cum laude) in Electronic Engineering in 1972 from Pavia University, Italy. He was a researcher of the Italian National Research Council from 1975 to 1983, and is presently a Full Professor of Computer Programming at Pavia University. From 1989 to 1995 Cantoni was Director of the Deparment of Computer Engineering, and from 1985 to 1990, he was the President of the Italian Group of the International Association for Pattern Recognition. He has been a Visiting Professor at Rutgers University, and has been Invited Professor at the Paris XI University. Levialdi is a Fellow of the IAPR and a senior member of IEEE.

Dr Stefano Levialdi, IEEE Life Fellow, has published 300 papers on image processing, image communication and, in these last years, his research has focused on Human/Computer Interaction (visual languages and usability). He is Full Professor of Computer Science at Sapienza, Rome University since 1981. He won the Chair of Excelence at Carlos III University in Madrid. He has organized, chaired and contributed to over 50 International meetings. He is the Director of LUA (Laboratory of Usability and Accessibility at Sapienza). He is now retired, but works for the Elsevier Journal (JVLC) and reviews national research projects. His email is: stefano.levialdi@gmail.com

I found 3C very very difficult to get through. While its not clear if the text began life in Italian, there are very convoluted word groupings that give one that impression.

Also I take issue with the existing description. This is a very mathematically dense text that suffers from three different voices and the clear lack of a hard core editor. If you are not willing to chew through it to find the nuggets I suggest you look elsewhere.

I believe this would be a more balanced and representative abstract.

Abstract
In 3C Vision, authors Cantoni, Levialdi and Zavidovique analyze and present "...the visual hints by which both humans and computer[s]... interpret, process, and exploit images." The goal of the book is to assist "...scientists, artists and engineers in any field..." to understand that images are information carriers that evoke strong emotional responses in humans. 3C addresses the theoretical, technological, artistic and communication aspects of 21st century graphic/visual capture, processing and presentation.

In a forward to the book Steven Tanimoto (2011) observes the books strength lies in its integration of "the technical information... [and] application... of this rapidly expanding aspect of the human experience.".

The first half of 3C Vision is given over to extensive and intricate visual/computational theory as understood and practiced by the current computer hardware and software industries. Dense and some might say arcane three dimensional and computational theories are discussed and presented through scientific formula and notation.

The second half of the book dives deeply into the current thinking and architecture of computer visual systems as well as some communication and artistic interpretations for how imagery is understood and processed. Artistic theory is discussed and presented in a way that scientists and engineers can truly appreciate. Any thoroughly trained artist may find these discussions unduly verbose and obtuse with the danger of rendering well understood principals and artistic tradition opaque.

A modest number of references help 3C Vision establish itself as a helpful resource for anyone interested in pursuing the numerous avenues of research presented within its pages.
