I love to make up my own spice mixes. I started out doing this to avoid things like cornstarch and excessive amounts of salt. So, I was thrilled to see this little book available for my Kindle. It starts out really good, giving lots of recipes for sauces and mixes with few substitutions like how to make cream of chicken soup. A sampling of some of the recipes in the book are

E's Bam Seasoning (I think its safe to assume this is a substitution for Emeril's Bam Seasoning)
Dry Onion Soup Mix
Enchilada Sauce
Gravy ~ several varities including sausage and gravy
Sausage seasonings

Then it gets a little weird. For example, a Pimento Cheese recipe that calls for
Evaporated Milk
Pimentos and
Jalapenos (optional)

I'm a southern girl and that doesn't sound like it would taste like any Pimento Cheese I've ever had. To be fair, I haven't tried it, but I think I'll pass.

Then the book gets into a section called "Economic Preppers Notes, Tips and Know How" - this is where it gets a little strange. There are several links that look like ads selling products like bug killer, a link to a free download of this "LDS PREPAREDNESS MANUAL Free book download" BY CHRISTOPHER M. PARRETT, and a link to a gadget called a 'breathing mobile washer'. The strangest thing about the book from this point on is that all of the sudden it reads like it was written by someone who's first language is not English. The use of the word "cloths" in several places for example, instead of "clothes."

I'll keep the book for the first half.

This book is such a great idea - the author has assembled a huge variety of mix and seasoning mix recipes and provides recipes to use many of them. You will recover the cost of the book on just the first 5-6 packages of mix [taco, ranch dressing, stir fry, etc] that you don't have to purchase in those goofy little envelopes. But the book goes way beyond these mixes - It goes into smoothies, homemade sausage, homemade cleaners, home food preservation, baking mixes, EVAPORATED MILK substitute[!] and more. This is a gem of a book - useful for even a "dash and dribble" cook like me!

I was going to give this book a 5 star rating but I do not feel comfortable doing so. The reason being is there does seem to some down home medical advice included in this book. Personally, I get a bit concerned when I read remedies concerning pregnant women and this book does include a remedy for swollen legs in pregnancy along with numerous other home remedies for medical ailments. It is always best to leave the medical information to the healthcare professionals especially when an unborn child is involved.

As to the recipes:

The food mixes look interesting and would be helpful. It would have been nice to have recipes or suggestions on how to use some of the food mixes. For example the author gives recipes for oriental based mixes but not how to use them. The mix recipes are called Oriental Dry Mix and Oriental Wet Mix. Both sound good but I haven't a clue on what to do with them. There are other recipes given for mixes but no recipes on how to use them.

Some of the mix recipes you will find in this cookbook include:

Poultry Seasoning 1 (No directions on how to use this recipe)
Apple Pie Spice (No directions on how to use this recipe)
Alfredo Sauce

As to the editing:

The book could have used better editing. For example the word seasoning is misspelled in a couple of key places.

Recommend with caveats given.

I downloaded this book earlier in the week and perused some of the recipes. Tonight I decided to make enchiladas and needed a sauce recipe. "The 4.1.1 Cookbook" came to the rescue! The sauce I made from this recipe tasted like the real thing. As I prefer to use fresh ingredients wherever possible, I substituted fresh garlic for garlic powder, and my enchiladas were a hit.

A member of my family is allergic to MSG, so I avoid buying seasoning mixes and bottled sauces. (My time in the supermarket is spent reading ingredient lists on labels!) So "The 4.1.1" gave me what I needed and will probably do so again in the future. I found it kind of funny that the one of the ingredients for Breakfast Sausage, for instance, is 3 lb. Sausage. I wasn't aware you could make sausage from sausage. I'm giving this gem 4 stars because it contains a lot of information and, although not perfect and sometimes a little confusing, it helped me out tonight.

I gave this book 3 stars because it doesn't tell you how to use the mixes, other than a store bought packet is 1/4 cup. That said we can do the math & adjust according to the sizes or batches we are making. I found many recipes I plan to use. I'm sure this will be a good money saver as spices bought in bulk are much cheaper than prepackaged.
