Seven albums, dated from 1955 to 1961: Brookmeyer, Stretching Out, Kansas City Revisited, The Blues Hot and Cold, Stan Getz-Bob Brookmeyer Recorded Fall 1961, 7 x Wilder, Trombone Jazz Samba. Not all of these are gems. There are some horrible cuts on the earliest one, Brookmeyer (1955) a big band album -the worst is a French version of the then-popular ballad "Nature Boy," played with a tuba and French horn led ensemble and dripping enough syrup dripping to please a diabetic. And little good can be said about Trombone Jazz Samba (1961), with mundane arrangements, too little room for improvising, and -worst of all--a bad match for Brookmeyer, whose playing is even for him untypically dried out.

Between are five albums of varying interest, which show Brookmeyer's development as composer-arranger-performer from a modestly talented soft bopper to something more idiosyncratic but also much more interesting.

The Getz-Brookmeyer set and The Blues Hot and Cold, with Jimmy Rowles, perhaps the greatest pianist-accompanist in jazz ever, are good but the albums that really make this set worth the expense are Kansas City Revisited and 7 x Wilder. The arrangements in the 1959 KC Revisited could have come from the pen of Jimmy Giuffre, so like his laidback, low intensity folkish approach are they, and the album features a fine cast of performers with, in addition to Brookmeyer, Al Cohn and Paul Quinichette on tenor, Jim Hall on guitar, Nat Pierce on piano and Addison Farmer and Osie Johnson on bass and drums. I could have done without the vocalist on a couple of the numbers: his singing reminded me how no one since has equaled Jimmy Rushing in singing these Basie-ite songs.

The gem of the set is Brookmeyer's homage to composer Alec Wilder. Brookmeyer is heard as much on piano as on valve trombone -he was an interesting pianist! See his work on The Ivory Hunters, released about the same time as the Wilder album. His partners on the album -Jim Hall on guitar, Bill Crow bass, and Mel Lewis drums--complement him perfectly. I defy anyone who enjoys jazz to listen to Brookmeyer and confreres playing Wilder's best known ballad, the beautiful "While We're Young," Brookmeyer's quietly musing piano, a lovely solo by Hall, Mel Lewis's subtle ¾ drumming moving it along. I almost wore this album out when I bought it on vinyl when it first came out. I'm delighted to have it again in digital format.

This set is a mixed bag, as many of these historical sets are, but it has so much good in it that it is well worth purchasing.

I bought this CD set after hearing a Bob Brookmeyer tune on the radio.
The 4 CDs have 7 of Brookmeyer's albums of course and mighty fine albums at that.
If you like jazz from this period, you'll probably like this set.
The Stan Getz collaborations are especially good.
The sound quality is first rate, as is the music.
