Frank's Capitol Years 11 décembre 2012
Par Thomas E. Davis - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD Achat vérifié
Frank Sinatra became a teen idol on the Columbia label during the early 1940s and a movie star in the latter half of the decade. He sold a lot of singles, but his career stalled in 1950 as he suffered both a hemorrhaging of the vocal cords and a debilitating depression. It was when he moved to Capitol in 1953 and started releasing "concept albums" that his popularity skyrocketed again. This was music for adults, and they responded by snapping up Frank's LPs by the millions. The selection of songs displayed sophistication, their interpretations demonstrated great depth, and the orchestrations, from brilliant arrangers like Nelson Riddle, Gordon Jenkins, and Billy May, are without parallel even today.

Between 1955 and 1960, six of Sinatra's Capitol releases were certified gold (selling more than 500,000 copies), and one, "A Jolly Christmas," went platinum (over a million copies). Four of these bestselling albums ("Come Fly With Me," "Come Dance with Me," "Nice 'n' Easy," and the holiday disc) appear on this European compilation from Real Gone Jazz, which includes half of Frank's 16 Capitol LPs on four CDs. They range from the lighthearted "A Swingin' Affair" to the despairing "No One Cares." My favorite record is the breezy "Come Fly with Me," but they're all terrific.

While there are no liner notes for this compilation, the sound is crystal clear, and the low price is the frosting on the cake. As wonderful as "Eight Classic Albums" is, I look forward to Volume 2 and the remaining Capitol albums, particularly the joyful "Songs for Swingin' Lovers," and two dark, brooding sets about lost love, "In the Wee Small Hours" and "Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely," which must be counted among his finest achievements.

Wonderful Collection 2 août 2014

8 albums for lunch money? What's the deal? In the UK, sound recording copyrights expired after 50 years. The law was changed, extending the copyright for 70 years - but it wasn't grandfathered in for recordings then out of copyright, the magic cutoff year being 1962. That being said, having the right to make a copy doesn't give you the rights to the physical masters. Just look at how well that works out for movies that fall through the copyright cracks, like "...Wonderful Life" or "Charade". You might end up with a copy that claws your eyes (or in this case ears) out. Knowing that, I rolled the dice on the 8 and 9 classic albums sets, figuring that even if these were mastered from an old 8 track I'd at least get a preview copy for some albums I didn't have and maybe some interesting alternates for albums I do own (I already had about half the 17 albums, split between Capitol CDs and Amazon mp3). But there was no need to be concerned, as these discs sound immaculate. No hiss, no distortion, nothing recorded through a megaphone onto Edison's cylinder, no 8 bit clangy overtones - just beautiful. I A-B'd "Point Of No Return" with the original Capitol CD and could hear no difference - in fact, it alerted me to some bad sounds around Frank's voice on the original. Yet it is not bit-fot-bit identical so...source unknown. My best guess would be WAVs uncompressed from iTunes AAC files - that would be relatively undetectable, but obviously not as good as an original 16-bit CD. Keep in mind that some people can tell the difference between 192 and 256 kbps AAC (or claim to) and I am not one of those people. But in an age where youngsters claim that vinyl sounds better than CD, who can you trust about anything?

But of course the sound doesn't matter if you hate the music, and if you hate the music, I don't know what to do for you. If you are kinda into whatever you've heard from Sinatra, then this is for you, especially the 8 album set. There are essentially 2 Franks, swingin' Frank and ballad Frank - he kept them pretty well segregated between his albums, and you get an excellent split here if one or the other doesn't do it for you. King of them all is "A Swingin' Affair". I was less familiar with some of the Reprise sides (9 CD collection) as the reviews on those aren't nearly as glowing. But I find them to be fantastic as well. Even if you are an indifferent Sinatra fan, having a good collection of his albums gives you an excellent selection of the greatest songs from the middle of the 20th century - songs you want to know, even if you don't know it yet.

I ordered both sets from 2 different companies in the UK, and they both showed up 8 days later, which is fairly incredible considering the S&H is the same as if you order it from a company up the road a piece.

Frank's the best, bar none! 28 décembre 2012
Par Stuart Meyers - Publié sur Amazon.com

If you don't love the greatest of Frank's recordings from the Fifties which are available to you on this re-issue, just stick to TV sports. Frank may have been a kinda punk, but if he was, he's my punk. HE WAS THE GREATEST SINGER OF THE PAST CENTURY. I have owned these 8 classic LPs presented here since the 50s. What a pleasure to be able to hear them 60 years later on CDs while in the shower or driving cross town, or in the back yard. A super value at many times the price. Excellent sounding CD set.

We have bought many of the album compilations by this company because they are a real bargain. It's super to have 8 albums on 4 CD's.
