Sorry to say, this dictionary of the avant-garde has it's gaps, misinterpretations, and inaccuracies. It is quite valuable for the most part, but the aforementioned problems should be addressed before the next edition hits the racks. There is scant mention of free improvisation, Derek Bailey (and his many contemporaries), Paul Klee, Al Hansen (and many other valuable Fluxus artists indivudually) and much else, but there are referances to one-off a-g practitioners (such as that Republican apologist P.J. O'Rourke) and others. Weird...maybe RK was trying to use his dictionary to stir up debate, but that's not what dictionaries are fundamentally for, I think.

If you're looking for a fair, complete account of the avant-garde and expect the writer to completely agree with you, then this is not your book. When I first opened it, I looked up Jean Cocteau (an influence on me to the point of getting his signature tattoed on my arm). RK slammed him; accusing him of being a softie in the difficult world of the cutting edge. I then looked up the Surrealists. Wow! Another blow. I can't help but like this approach. Way too many critics are afraid of nonconformity. They agree with each other and usually come to the same interpretations about ALL of the major players. There will be entries in this book that will offend your esthetic taste; it's not for the faint of heart. But even when you dissagree it will be interesting. There are some omissions which I wish were mentioned. Joe Maneri, the Residents, and Ron Silliman (Don't expect a kind reading of the Language poets). That doesn't matter to me given the number of wild cards that are listed. (I found the PJ O'Rourke entry to be enlightening.) All in all, it's worth the price tag and will keep you entertained for a long long time.

this book helped me to understand the meaning of avant-garde, and help push towards improving my knowledge of cultures which are unknown to many. if you want to spend that much money on a book then go ahead and get it, ASAP!
