Only a month after Charles Lindbergh made the first flight across the Atlantic, Clyde Eddy launched his boat trip down the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon. These two trips seem to have shared much of the same spirit. The 1920s was an age of exuberance in America, of daredevil pilots, rising skyscrapers, dance marathons, and stock market bubbles. Eddy seems to have been inspired by the sheer daring of such a trip, unlike the Grand Canyon's first river runner, John Wesley Powell, who was more interested in geology. The history of river running on the Colorado River offers quite a cast of characters, and Eddy is one of the more exotic characters. His trip included a bunch of college boys, a bear cub, and a dog. This book has been out of print for decades, very rare, and very expensive. Thanks go to the University of New Mexico Press for bringing it back into circulation.
