Johns Hopkins’ A Man’s Guide to Healthy Aging was the first book a got and read after I got out of the hospital last year following my stroke. It seemed to be just where I should start, and I was not disappointed. The book is exhaustive and covers everything one could possibly want to know about how to get healthy as you age. The book almost 600 pages and is arranged into four sections, with a sum of 23 chapters.

The first section is on “managing daily living,” and incorporates wellness. It has chapters on staying active, eating well, healthy aging, stress, and relationships. The second section is about “mind-body connections,” and has chapters on sleep, appearance, spirituality, alcohol and drugs, and holistic medicine. The third section concentrates on the “male body,” with chapters on the heart, memory, diabetes, sexual health, bones, joints and muscles, teeth, eyes, and cancers. The final section is on “relationships,” with four chapters on sexual intimacy, retirement, caregiving, and end-of-life matters. Many of the chapters are co-written with experts on the relevant topics.

With so many health and fitness books out there, the question for potential users of the book is whether it is better than other sources? Here are some reasons why this book is worth your time and money:

1. It is only for men and men’s healthy and aging concerns. There are many books like this targeted to women but very few just for men and none, that I could find, that are as thorough as A Man’s Guide to Healthy Aging.
2. The information in the book is far more comprehensive and useful than what appears in most other books covering health and aging. It even has more than many medical or fitness websites with which I am familiar.
3. The fact that it is published by Johns Hopkins University Press in their Health Book series also may give the reader more reason to trust it. Each chapter is written by an authority in the subject matter covered - such as Medical Doctors, Sociologist, Psychologist, Counselors, Physical Therapist, Nutritionist and many other field professionals.
4. A Mans Guide to Healthy Aging aims to put older men's health in a social and even political context, in a way that helps to enable men to take command of their health. To some degree, it aims to speak directly to men's experience and men's needs in a way that books by other health experts do not.
5. A holistic approach is used all through the book, which is unusual and refreshing for such guides. For example, in the chapter on vision, the writers explain normal changes related to aging, and then their first suggestion is for healthy eating to keep healthy eyes. They also recommend shielding eyes from the UV rays of the sun, and, of course, remind readers that smoking boosts the risk of eye disorders. The section also considers the implications for mental health problems, since men with vision loss are at elevated danger for depression, stress, loneliness and sadness.

A Man's Guide to Healthy Aging incorporates a less traditional approach than we might presume from a mainstream university press that tends to be linked with biomedical strategies. It gives not merely data, which is probably accessible elsewhere, but also a unique method of thinking about the health of aging men. This book does not just duplicate the same information that is accessible in related guides, and it should be beneficial to both men and their families in addressing their health issues.

Since those of us who would be interested in such a topic probably think that we already know everything, we may find some content of this book obvious and reinforcement to what we already know. On the other hand, the authors have contributors who are experts in their fields and have seen a broader spectrum of experiences give their best advice which should be useful in a broad range of topics.

One interesting approach in the book is to use bulleted highlights for courses of action or improvements in dealing with various topics and situations.

It will take a while to get through the entire book, but I am picking topics of current interest and look forward to finishing the book in coming weeks.

If you are getting old, then it is good to know what is happening and have reliable advice on what you can go to stay healthy and up to par.

I am not all that far into this tome but it covers a wide variety of aging issues and information I don't get from my doctor during my routine visits. I think reading this will help me get more out of my regular visits to my doctor in the future. At age 68, I am always waking up with some new stuff that I find annoying and have found several of the explanations very helpful. I helps separate the normal from the abnormal I wish I could have had access to this book in my 40's. Every man and concerned spouses should read this book.
