4.0 étoiles sur 5 Historical reference...Vol.2 22 septembre 2000
Par Dianne Foster - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Broché
I ordered "A Modern Herbal" by Mrs. Grieve, and then realized when it arrived I had ordered only A-H (Vol.1). This is Vol.2. of the original book. The volume #'s are indicated but I did not read the description carefully, so I did notice the paperback version had been published in two volumes.
"Modern Herbal" contains much information about the "old" ways. Traditional approaches may be dated according to some folks, but for many of us, they do not have the "sell-by" date which permeates modern society. Many of the old remedies have never been subjected to the "scientific" testing of modern times or USDA approved. However, the curative and/or prophylactic properties of herbal substances have been known for centuries, and information about their uses has been handed down from one woman to another. I have been fortunate because I have had relatives who knew the old ways, and passed them along. (Like passalong plants.)
And, while modern pharmaceutical companies will not tell you this, they are 1) using old methods--only now you must pay big bucks and buy the plant extract over the counter as a perscription drug -- for example, Valium is derived from the root of the Red Valerian, Digitalis from the Fox Glove, and Poppy juice--well--you can still buy that on the street--it's called heroine; 2) testing the properties of plants used in folk remedies and marketing the stuff as fast as they can--Echinacea, and Ginger for example.
So, read the information in this REFERENCE book and form your own opinions.

This is the best and only reference for the history, culture and use of thousands of herbs. Wonderful detail, this is truly an encyclopedia.

IMHO both volumes are a "must-have" for serious gardeners.

Maud Grieve's wonderful A Modern Herbal, lovingly edited by Hilda Leyel and originally published in 1931 has everything to highly recommend it and only one thing to be said against it - from time to time it goes out of print. This is a blissful book for anyone with an interest in plants with any sort of medicinal application.

Even though the entire book (more recently published in 2 volumes, though initially available as a huge fat tome in entirety) has been available free online since 95, nothing beats the addictively browsable hard copy, whether in 1 or 2 vols.

The full extent of the delights within, and some idea of the huge eclectic group of readers who may wish to gobble and savour the text are given by the 'subtitle' :

'The medicinal, culinary, cosmetic and economic properties, cultivation and folklore of herbs, grasses, fungi, shrubs and trees with all their modern scientific uses.'

My only minor cavils would be that due to the date of publication, and the fact that Grieve is fairly Eurocentric in her erudition, some plants with a deep history as oriental medicinals will have little reference to their medicinal use, and may even be dismissed as medicinals - for example, cardamon, described as 'not used medicinally' but 'solely for pharmaceutical purposes as a flavouring' Ayurvedic practitioners might be forgiven for raising a coolly critical eyebrow at that one! More 'modern' medicinal successes such as the ubiquitous tea tree also fail to register, even though other Melaleucas are cited. So it is really when 'traditional' use outside Europe and North America makes it into European consciousness that Grieve will detail the plant. Not her fault of course, just to do with her time and place.

Whatever your interest is in the plant kingdom, you are bound to discover at least a nugget of gold within its pages! Me, I found a whole mountain!

This is one of those books which personally I would NEVER want to own in digitised version, ereaders do not touch the pleasure to be had in leafing and browsing with an encyclopaedia - surely the booky version of being a rambler, listing as thou wilt! - rather than a linear A to B journey

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Quite interesting! 27 mai 2006

Quite interesting books (two volumes) which combines information from divers old pharmaceutical books and ancient herbals.

"A Modern Herbal" is written in an easy to unterstand language. It contains a discription of each mentioned plant and information about cultivation, active components and classical medical usage.

I'm not a herbalist! Nevertheless, plant extrakts may be interesting not only as a cure for a disease but also if you want to stay healthy. Furthermore, plants are more and more used by cosmetic industry.

You should keep in mind that even "harmless" medical plants can course dangerous allergies if the hole plant is used. This risk can be avoided if a pharmaceutical or cosmetic preparation is used which contains only the active component (e.g. Bisabolol).

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Great Herbalism 3 avril 2014
Par Valerie B. Lull - Publié sur Amazon.com

Volume 2 of "A Modern Herbal" is every bit as good as volume 1. It is an herbal writtten in another age by a woman who knew her subject very well. She continues with her list of herbs and explains the uses each herb had in her day, much of which is still valid in our modern day and age. She throws in interesting tid bits from her times about various rules and laws regarding certain plants, which ones were allowed and which ones were not. While today we have much scientific backing and knowledge for the uses we have for herbs, it is amazing how much of her information is accurate in the light of todays scientific findings. I recommend both Volume 1 and Volume 2 to anyone who has a serious interest in herbalism and herbal remedies. I also found it interesting reading. -- Valerie Lull, Author, Ten Healthy Teas
