The world of Mera... it is not like our own but it isn't faery but something completely different. A place of immortals hand picked by its ruler, to live out their lives in stasis for eternity, in a place with neither a police force nor hospitals, for all injuries heal and crime is non existent (or otherwise defined). It is the fountain of youth, expanded into a city, and populated by those chosen to go back into where and when and invite others to dwell there. However, the "rescue missions" are not as easy as it would seem. A rather mild manner, bookish man named Jerry is summoned for a rescue, and given the scantiest of instructions. With the conditions met, and his traveling companion selected, who is a Grecian warrior nicknamed Killer, they journey to the "outside" to begin their rescue. They get more than they bargained for, become trapped between worlds, and have a night of demons rattling the windows before they can even move on...
This was Duncan's first novel and it kind of shows. There's more dialogue between characters than usual and the action scenes are not quite as taut or involving. A few places drag, especially when the mortals are bickering in the cabin and doing predictably stupid things. There are lots of historical references and even a trip into a minotaur's labyrinth. There is character growth, an interesting and entertaining world, and a usually fast pace - all Duncan trademarks. The ending has a touch of a twist to it, and ends on a better note than anticipated. Even with the few bogged down sections, this is still more than a worthy read with an unexpected payoff.
Also those looking for a stand alone fantasy... there are no sequels here. A breezy read, and a great standby for when a staggering series just seems to be daunting at the moment.
