I won't review the story for you. The synopsis is pretty straight forward. Lets just get to the review:

The Good
GREAT and Interesting Story. Loved the plot and storyline. I lived the heroine. She was realistic and three dimensional. There was none of that...."I've found love and now I'm happy to throw out everything else for you" mentality that makes a woman look like a carpet. Yay. The world building and culture...I liked it a lot and enjoyed the creativity. The story showed an originality that I miss and the conflict was real with Abby having to leave behind her world and how she dealt with it.

The Bad
Inconsistent things in the story. One example...Abby is blonde. This is described in the story...blonde. If there is any doubt about that, then there is always the cover on the book that clearly shows her blonde hair. Somewhat annoying when she all of a sudden has dark hair. Did she dye it? If so...please...don't leave that scene out. Otherwise I'm a little frustrated that the author can't pay enough attention to detail to keep a character blonde.

The Ugly
The editing. I'm not an editor and I'm not an English major and I grew really frustrated with the editing. In places it is the wrong tense and just odd. Here are some examples from the book: "They did not returned to the palace until the next day" then there is the word usage "She was trying in vain to stubbly move away from where he had been rubbing his fingers along her shoulder". Stubbly...I'm assuming that wasn't the actual word the writer meant to write. I should add that in this paragraph alone "had" was used more than 10 times. Really? No other way to word that? I should also add that the writer didn't seem to grasp the difference between "to" and "too". Why am I buying a book and reading it if the writer or editor can't take the time to read it themselves. Surely had they actually read through it they would have noticed a few of these things. The book is littered with them.

Conclusion: I bought the second book in the series....Why? Because it is an awesome story line and I was interested. Be warned. I'm 16% through Capturing Cara and already I've come across more of the editing issues. Examples you ask? "Ariel said added." looks like someone meant to change 'said' to 'added' but sadly, because no one read through it for review it was never corrected. I could give you 3 more right now for the current book but I'm sure you get the point.

S.E. Smith: I love the story enough to get the 2nd book despite your editing issues. If you are tired of reading your own book, send me an ARC. I'll read through with a "red pen" and fix the problems. But PLEASE PLEASE don't ruin a great story with bad editing on the next book. Your world-building and imagination are a joy to read. The editing on it isn't. Take the money that you deserve to receive for writing a great story and hire a professional editor before you put out your next book.

OK. First of all, the idea for this book was really good. The story is well plotted and held my interest. I won't review the storyline since is is well documented in other reviews.

Unfortunately, the editing (if there was any) was horrific. In addition to the usual typos one finds in self-published books, this one was full of incorrect word usage. Seriously, the author doesn't know the difference between prostate and prostrate?? or that you bathe not bath (this one occurred multiple times)? So, as an editor with more than 30 years of experience, I am offering my services. This author and these books have a great deal of potential, I'd hate for them to be less successful than they could be.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Wow, I really like this author! 18 avril 2012

I have read all 4 of the author's books available on Kindle and I've liked/loved all of them. I think what works for me is they all feature interesting, strong female leads who realistically (yes, I know this is PNR so one always has to suspend some disbelief) reactions to the situation at hand. I can really see how the author will make a series of this one as well as her other books.

Although her scifi type books are running formulaic with a woman getting "abducted" along with sisters/friends whom you know will hook up with the male lead's brothers, I am okay with this as the female leads have different backgrounds and personalities. Even when she does write an eventual sequel featuring the side female characters, you just know it will make a great story (hope she does one on Cara soon : )

I do admit though, there needs to be editing for grammar/punctuation/correct words in all of her books. I get the feeling, she just runs her drafts through spell checker and hits "accept all." There were a few times where I have had to reread sentences in order to understand what the heck was going on.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Great Premise! Needs Polish! 23 mai 2012

Abducting Abby by S.E. Smith is a mixed bag of a wonderful story trapped in atrocious editing. There is so much to say about this book we should take it one thing at a time. So let's start with the positive.

PROS: Engaging characters make you want to keep reading. You just have to find out what happens to these guys. They are likable and relatable. Zoran and Abby are well written and manage to show some development of their characters, though not much. Zoran's brothers and Abby's fellow human females make intriguing secondary characters, and almost guarantee readers will come back to the series even if it's just to see what happens to a favorite supporting personality. The story, while following many conventions of both paranormal and sci-fi romance, still manages to be original. I loved the idea of the symbiotic companions the dragon shifters had.

CONS: Did I mention the editing was atrocious? This was one of the worse books I have seen when it comes to editing. It is not just a matter of the many, many, many, many misspelled words. There were also more than several instances of words used wrong (as in substituting "too" for "to" or "conscience" for "conscious" for example). There were also tons of errors in formatting. The chapters were not clear cut and the switching between points of view was often confusing. Also, many times the author spent too much page space on tangents and shortened scenes crucial to the plot. There were many plot devices that were underused, or simply presented but then nothing else was done with them.

I normally don't pay too much attention to the occasional mistake in a book as long as the story is good, but there were just so numerous that it actually interrupted the flow of the story. It truly affected my enjoyment of what should have been an outstanding read. I felt like taking out my red pen and correcting the entire thing, but of course that would not be very practical to do on my Kindle. Almost any teacher who has experience teaching English could have corrected this and it would have been an improvement. If one of my students would have handed this in to me I would have had to return it and encourage them to polish what would hopefully be an early draft. That is what this book reads like. I am hoping the author will improve with experience, and I will give the next book in the series a try. I really like the character of Cara, and hope her book is better.

The Bottom Line: This should have been a 5 star read. The story was very interesting, especially for a sci-fi romance. The author and the series have tons of potential. The editing was just too bad not to notice. Give it a try if you would like to read an intriguing story, but be prepared for the painfully bad grammar and formatting. There are many other books out there that are much better, due to the actual editing that does not seem to happen in this book.

My suggestion to the author is to find beta readers or someone who will be willing to go through her writing before submitting it, and will help her polish the work. Sometimes when we write something we are too close to the narrative to see the mistakes we make in the mechanics. Keep writing, you have a great imagination, but please find someone to help you with the editing.

1.0 étoiles sur 5 Less than satisfactory 31 août 2012

This was painful, stilted storytelling at it's finest. As other reviewers have mentioned there are tons of editing errors but that wasn't even my problem with the book. The premise sounded fun but the delivery was very poor. There was too much focus on minor details (during the sponge bath did we need to know that she turned over an old picnic table cloth (vinyl side down) and laid towels under him before bathing him? Talk about taking a reader out of what should be a sexy moment and making me consider the finer points of table linenes. It just felt awkward. Anyhow, very little character development, too little dialogue between the main characters, repetetive word choices, and a general overuse of paranormal romance cliches made this a one star read for me.

Do yourself a favor and get the sample and you will get an accurate sense of what you are in for.
