I grew up with Mark Twain stories and essays. I read Huck Finn as a child and evidently I read the white-washed homogenized "kids" version because this original transcription contains all the local dialects and nuances that would not be interesting to a kid. I have to say this is the adult version of what became a children's adventure tale. Yes, the N word is used, and appropriately in the context of the story. I wish I could have read this original text when I was a child and could identify with the linguistic pronunciations. This Huck was more adult and endearing than I remember it as a child. It was loose, disordered and not at all interesting back then. This book was more than satisfying for the humor, outrageousness and sweet and moving friendships that are timeless and give a glimpse of what life was like in the rural country along the Mississippi. I highly recommend reading this book and experiencing the characters anew. You will not be disappointed.

I wanted to re-read this due to the discussions of removing it from school libraries and required reading lists related the use of a certain word. I read this in the fifth grade, and at that time, it was simply a great adventure of two boys . Now, over 50+ years later I see it in an entirely different light. It is not just an adventure of two boys... but also a social and political commentary on slavery. Now I truly appreciate the significance and genius of Mark Twain. It is a part of our history that we need to study and learn from. Like the Holocaust...we should never forget.

It was so much fun reading this book again! This is definitely a classic and it had me laughing out loud. I hope that everyone can get over the fact that there is n-word used in this book and just realize that it was written in a different era. Don't miss out on a fun adventure!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 THE GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL... SADLY REJECTED BY SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS TODAY! 29 août 2014

Truly the Great American Novel!
I remember reading this book in high school...many decades ago. And it captivated me and enchanted me then. It still captivates and enchants. The novel is a great American Oddysey..not only through the landscapes of our country at the time it was written, but also of the nature of man.
I am amazed at the hypocricy shown in many school systems that have taken this book out of their high school curriculum. They claim it is because it uses the "n" word. And indeed, one cannot deny that it does. Yet many school systems are using text books and reading lists containing the same word, a flood of profanity, and sexual imagery and filth. Indeed, it is hypocritical that this great novel has been rejected...while the students who refuse to read it use the same word to address one another... It is sad... and they have missed one of the most poignant and powerful lessons of the book.
Huckleberry Finn was written in a time when slavery existed. One cannot deny it. It was written in a time when blacks were looked down on and enslaved. Again, this cannot be denied. However, the racism in modern times is often more terrible and all pervasive than slavery and it's evils.
But there are those who will condemn this book for the use of the infamous "n" word.
Let us consider though... the "n" word used in the book should be viewed in it's context... and the times in which it was written.
And yes, because of that word's use, there will be those who will reject it... although I suspect that in some cases, this is an excuse NOT to have to read such an extended novel.
However, I challenge everyone...young and old...of all races to consider the true lesson and importance of this great American novel.
In a time when slavery was an issue...at a time when the black and white communities were utterly polarized, author Mark Twain wrote a book that is truly priceless and revolutionary.
He wrote the novel about a young white boy named Huckleberry Finn... and an escaped black man named Jim... who travelled together through this great land... and in an age when it was almost unthinkable... they cast aside the issues of race...and became the greatest of friends... something unthinkable then... and sadly, in many places, still is unthinkable today.
I look forward to enjoying this book again and again and hope that you will also.
