I enjoyed the other books in the series but found this novel overcommplicated and the character of Luke unconvincing from the beginning. Beach reading at best.

Where to start....

I read this book simply because of how much I loved the first book in the series. The first book was great and left me wanting to know more about the characters and of course more about the life of a child advocate.

I can honestly say Teresa Burrell delivered. This book gives you yet another great story while taking you into the personal lives of the characters. (Let's just say I fell in love with JP). By the end of the book (which I couldn't put down) I felt as if I had made 3 new terrific friends (Sabre, Bob, and of course JP). Teresa Burrell did such an incredible job at developing these characters. With every page, you feel like you are listening to these characters tell you the story.

This book made me laugh, cry and at times it even got my adrenaline rushing. Teresa Burrell is a great other and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next. I see a bright future in Teresa Burrell.

The best part of the Advocate series is that it is coming from an actual child advocate, someone who has seen these kinds of cases first hand. Luckily for us readers, she was able to make incredible stories that give us an inside look at the life of a child advocate.

BUY this book, you won't regret it I promise. :)

Sabre Orin Brown is destined to be a favorite mystery heroine. From the opening scenes of this legal thriller to the final twist, this book will keep you guessing. Teresa Burrell surpasses herself in this stand-alone follow-up to her debut novel. Sabre must overcome innumerable obstacles as she is faced with the seemingly impossible task of clearing the name of a good friend who has been accused of murder.

First, I have to say I have the greatest respect for anyone who writes a novel, good or bad. And especially for someone who has written more than one. Having said that, I will have to admit I could not get into this book. Maybe because I jumped right into the second novel without reading the first, I just couldn't connect with the characters. For me, the dialog was boringly average, I just didn't get any spark. In fact, I finally just skipped to the end of the book to confirm my guess as to who the murderer was. I was right and I thought it was painfully obvious...maybe I have just read way to many novels of this genre. Apparently, I am in the looks like there are a lot of fans for the Advocate series.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Good, Solid Legal Mystery/Thriller 29 juin 2012

The Advocate's Betrayal starts in a good, solid thriller way, with the perfect hook to grab a reader's attention and make them want to find out whodunit and why.

Unfortunately, the next three-quarters of the book didn't really live up to that thrilling start. Even so, the mix of stories going on in Sabre's life made it an entertaining read.

At the top of the list is Sabre's investigation into the death of her dear friend, John (the victim of that thrilling start to the book), and the arrest of his wife, Betty. Taking a big step out of her comfort zone as a child advocate, Sabre steps up to the bar to defend Betty (who was really fairly annoying, to be honest).

At the same time, Sabre continues her work as a child advocate, which in this case involves her in a racially charged case of parents raising their two children to hate. Although this side story keeps the reader aware that Sabre does have other duties besides defending her friend, Betty, it was really just a detour from the main plot (although not a bad one).

Then surrounding all this is the blossoming romance between Sabre and the handsome newcomer, Lucas, a friend of Betty and John.

Add this all together with her ongoing friendship with Defense Lawyer, Bob, and Private Investigator, JP, and the stage is set for The Advocate's Betrayal.

Author, Teresa Burrell, does tell a good story; however, she does tend to pad things at times with a little too much unnecessary information when setting the scene. This caused a loss in momentum at times, particularly in the first three-quarters of the book. Once things really started to happen, the book moved smoothly and excitingly to the end.

I think, perhaps, I've become way too familiar with little tricks some authors attempt when trying to detract attention from a particular character. Either that or I'm just a really suspicious person. (I prefer to think the former.) Either way, I knew who the killer was, well within the first quarter of the book. I thought I knew why, as well, but I was wrong on that case until about halfway through. As a result, the ending came as no surprise at all to me, not even the attempted big twist in the last sentence. Even so, I was just pleased with myself for getting it right.

Overall, The Advocate's Betrayal was an enjoyable read with pleasant enough characters and a believable story line. I liked it enough to be now interested in reading the first book in this series at some point. I would probably give it 3.5 stars rather than 3, but it didn't quite make it as a 4 star read for me.
