Présentation de l'éditeur

It had been years since I had seen any of the children with whom I had grown up. When I left the children's home, I promised myself that I would have nothing to do with them, I was sure that my only chance of living a good life would be to put the past behind me, even though that meant saying goodbye to some of the people I loved the most - as well as the ones I hated...it turned out that six of us had died, several by slow suicide in the form of heroin abuse, and at least two by faster means. When two police officers arrived out of the blue at Paul Connolly's door, he learned the shocking news that, out of the eight children with whom he shared a dormitory in care, only two were still alive. The revelation unearthed painful memories of a childhood that, until this point, Paul had tried desperately to put behind him. Abandoned at two weeks old, Paul came of age in the infamous St Leonards's Children's Home in East London. The children there were routinely abused, often over the course of many years. All were underfed and unloved and told that they would amount to nothing. Angry and frustrated, Paul channelled his rage into boxing - but when an accident shattered his ambition to turn professional, he found his true calling and became a successful trainer, even working as a consultant on the pilot of a top model's fitness video. Paul has finally found peace and fulfilment beyond anyhing he could have imagined all those years ago. He has found happiness with his wife and children and now helps to heal broken bodies, build confidence and transform lives - but he will never forget his past and the unnecessary victims of broken society...

5.0 étoiles sur 5 An amazing story 10 avril 2012

This is a painful book to read, but insightful all the same. It is written in a light-handed manner that we digest the poignancy of the story of this emotional and far-reaching story with a laugh every now and then. The great thing about this story, like Janvier Chando's The Grandmothers, is that we see the resilience of children and humans in general even in situations where institutions and society fail them. It also gives us an idea how things could be better if we listen to the sufferers who are under our care.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Interesting story in English 8 mars 2013
Format:Format Kindle|Achat vérifié
This is an easy to read book in English and although often repetitive in recalling the feeling of neglect and humiliation of a childhood in a care (or uncaring) institution, it shows the struggle to cope in the outside world and the determination of the author to succeed.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 An Inspirational Read... 3 novembre 2010
Par Leonora D'Angelo-Blitz - Publié sur Amazon.com
Paul Connolly's story is simultaneously heartbreaking and uplifting. That's what makes it so difficult to put down.
It is unfathomable to imagine the kind of people Paul has encountered through his life's journey. From beginning to end, this story will make you feel the pain of a little boy without a family and the struggle of a man fighting (literally) to make a life for himself....it captures every emotion. Paul's writing is honest, real and authentic. His physical, mental and emotional challenges in life were many but his story leaves you with the feeling that it's really not about how many times we fall, but how well we rise. A must read...truly inspirational.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Bestseller in the UK Kindle store 6 janvier 2012

I am a Brit and a regular traveller and was telling people here in the US about this great book - which has been topping the UK bestseller Kindle chart (both biography and all books) so thought I had better post a review. This is a great read and as other reviewers have said while it pulls no punches, it is a great story about overcoming adversity and how (and this is where the title comes from I guess) despite some of the worst possible beginnings anyone can overcome the challenges thrown at them, face tough choices and questions and ultimately make a good life for themselves.
There is a lot of press about this book in Europe now and it has been beating titles like Dragon Tattoo in the charts which is understandable, there is something in the story (or rather biography) which means you never know quite where things are heading and as the other reviewers have said, really does bring every possible emotion into play. It's easy to get absorbed in the story and associating with the author and his dilemmas - definitely worth a read and 5 stars.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A must read 28 décembre 2011

This book is a must read...especially if you want to understand how a person CAN overcome even the most horrid upbringing. Against All Odds tells a story of one man's journey...left as a young child in what should have been a safe place...to be abused physically and mentally, and to be able to rise above it all and become the man he is today. I've met Paul and he is the most kind and loving person...it really is amazing given what he went through. The book is an easy read, one I couldn't put down, one that made me cry, made me laugh and above all made me feel joy.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 brutal and revealing 1 avril 2013

I have just finished this book and was most impressed by the raw honesty of Paul Connolly, it is a revealing look into his inner struggle as a man, a human being and a parent while leaving you in no doubt as to the brutality of both his childhood and that which he himself bought into the world as an adult. As you read the book you can see the inner shuffling of life priorities over the years and an inspiring drive to discover the very person he was told he could never be. i felt privileged at being able to look into what at times felt like his pain and at other times felt like his soul, it is the oddest sensation to feel you know someones inner workings so well when you have never met them but that is exactly how this book leaves you.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Amazing and shocking. Loved it! 16 février 2012
Par Amazon Customer - Publié sur Amazon.com
Reading a book like this always seems difficult when you are shocked by some encounters characters go through but since it is a true story it was amazing and honest read. Not many people would write some of the thing the author has. I recommend it to everyone, especially to people who think they had a tough upbringing. It makes you appreciate what you had and have. And at the end Paul has proven the Auntie Coral wrong!
