A little about me. I'm a middle aged frustrated musician. I have tried different methods and different instuments over the years, only to fail miserably. That said, I decided to get this course and start right from the begining again. I use an old Yamaha keyboard to practice on. I'm about 1/2 done with this book, and I'm having good results for a change. My advice to others is to take it nice and slow, and do a couple of lessons at a time until you have them down cold. I used to try and burn through books like these in the past, and never developed solid fundamentals. A music teacher would never say to do as much of a book as you could before the next lesson. I've finally learned some patience.

One of the reasons I chose this course over "Learn to play the Keyboard" courses is that so many of the Keyboard courses seemed to be teaching how to manipulate the Keyboard to sound great while playing music similar to what's found in those "EZ-Play" music books. Then too, so many courses were of the "miracle" variety. Meaning, they teach you how to play a few songs rapidly, but don't give you much to build on. I know Alfred's courses have been around more years than me, and teaches fundamentals. The study guides are written cleary, plainly, and to the point.

About the CD, what the above reviewers said is accurate. The musician on the CD is using an electronic keyboard. So am I, sometimes I set my keyboard to sound the same as the CD. Either way, I haven't seen it as a problem myself, but then, I have been exposed to playing music (not very well) over the years too. So I guess that's something to consider if you have no music experience at all. Offhand, I think they did the CD this way to make the course more fun.

There really is no substitute for face to face lessons. If that's not feasable, this course will get you where you want to go.

Unique course for learning popular music 13 novembre 2009
Par Amazon Customer - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
Like a number of other adults with the ambition to play the piano, I have purchased several "how to" beginning piano books. Most claim to make the study of playing the piano "easy and enjoyable." Few live up to that claim.

Now however, Alfred Publishing has introduced the "Self-Teaching Adult Piano Course." which, I believe, honestly lives up to that assertion.

The authors (Manus and Palmer) as well as most students know that learning to play the piano takes patience, practice, knowledge and a love of music. These come together in developing the proper piano playing skills. These skills can be explained and taught in such a way that a firm foundation is built. With the right approach, the student understands, can follow the instructions, enjoys the process and sees the progress. This course offers just such an approach and provides the instructional tools necessary for the beginning adult piano student.

The course consists of a book and CD, but its uniqueness resides in the structure of the course and the inclusion of a "study guide" for each music page. The course follows a step-by-step process, with the study guides explaining in clear and simple language the "How and Why" for properly completing each step.

In using the course, I was reminded of Albert Einstein's quote; "Make everything as simple as possible, but no simpler" I think the Alfred organization has come close to achieving this with their new book.

This is a unique course for learning popular music. I highly recommend it.

Great Book! 12 novembre 2009
Par S. Foster - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
I actually went to Boarder's to look at the "learning to play piano" books because I wanted to be able to flip through them in person. After looking through literally ALL of the books, I decided on this one and was so excited that I didn't wait to go home and order it on Amazon.com. I bought it then an there (even though I love Amazon).

I took piano lessons for a few years 30 years ago. I have always wanted to get back into it and even bought a key board a few years ago since I couldn't afford a piano, I just could never find the right book and didn't have time to take actual lessons.

This book is EXCELLENT!!! From the very beginning, the lessons are clear, precise, easy to understand and continue to progress to an advanced level. The lessons take you a baby step at a time but quickly enough to where you want to keep playing because you actually start to hear yourself playing music. It's is awesome! And I wouldn't say that if I didn't feel excited to go home a practice because I actually feel and hear myself playing the piano and not just doing monotonous piano exercises.

This is great for beginners or for anyone looking to start playing again and need to re-fresh their skills. I'm reading music and playing the piano. What a great feeling. This book is perfect!

I don't have a CD player next to my keyboard to listen to the CD so I can't rate that yet but so far I have not needed it and the songs that you are learning in the book you have most likely heard before so you can tell if it sounds on-track or not.

A Great and Useful Book for a True Beginner 5 septembre 2011
Par JennyRac - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
As a true beginner, I found this book very useful. It gives you a "small" step on each lesson and have you master it before moving on. The music theories covered are in "incremental" steps, which are not hard for a beginner to comprehend.

I have never played piano in my life, nor have I known music scores and and theories. I have a small keyboard but never know how to play. In the past few years, I attempted to learn how to play piano by searching for resources on Internet but found the lessons on Internet were quite difficult. Early last year, I bought this book from Barnes&Nobles and started learning and going through the book myself. In several early lessons, I had to stop since I was unable to coordinate both hands together.I went back and forth with the "difficult pieces" several times. I could play the pieces separately but not with both hands. I bought other books and piano CDs but found they are even harder for me after the initial basic lessons. I also searched on Internet for piano lessons, finding them "hard" for me since my problem was to coordinate both hands. I read teacher's note on a forum saying that while playing I need to think "vertically", not "horizontally". This was enlightening, with this type of thinking, I then made it through the seeming difficult pieces one-by-one. I was on-and-off a bit throughout the year, but eventually I am now near the end, three pieces left in the book.

All I want to say that, this book is the best resource for me, a true beginner who has no knowledge of music theory and just want to explore how to play piano before spending money for lessons. The CD is helpful since it gives me an idea how the music sounds like as a whole piece. I also searched on Youtube, some people played all pieces on the book, which I found helpful. Seeing others playing the same music on the same book gives me an idea how the keys are arranged. Last month, I bought an acoustic piano and was going through all the pieces again on the book. Now, I am playing on acoustic piano and is really building on basic finger techniques by watching youtube videos.

I am still not thinking about getting a piano teacher yet; as a self-learner, I am going to watch some videos to learn various techniques. Then I will get the level 2 and level 3 books to go through all the pieces. I have to say it is this book that got me started and led me to the door of piano world.
