Présentation de l'éditeur

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll.

It tells of a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures.

The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre.
Its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre.
The journey began at Folly Bridge near Oxford and ended five miles away in the village of Godstow. During the trip the Reverend Dodgson told the girls a story that featured a bored little girl named Alice who goes looking for an adventure.

The girls loved it, and Alice Liddell asked Dodgson to write it down for her. He began writing the manuscript of the story the next day, although that earliest version no longer exists. The girls and Dodgson took another boat trip a month later when he elaborated the plot to the story of Alice, and in November he began working on the manuscript in earnest.

Lewis Carroll's first appearance of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was a much shorter work titled Alice's Adventures Under Ground. Although the final product is well known for John Tenniel's memorable illustrations, Carroll himself illustrated his original manuscript. In fact, many of Tenniel's illustrations were actually based on Carroll's own. Carroll gave the original, handwritten manuscript to Alice Liddell, the girl for whom his heroine was named.

Just a warning to readers this version is heavily abridged although it doesn't indicate that anywhere. For instance there's no The Mock Turtle's Story or The Lobster Quadrille. Also paragraphs and lines are omitted frequently. Be that as it may it was smoothly edited and still makes perfect sense if one didn't know the full version.

The story of Alice in Wonderland is everywhere. It has been made into multiple movies, there is countless references to it, and everyone seems to know the tale by heart. Yet have you ever actually read the story?

It was upon the realization that I have not that I first picked up Alice in Wonderland a few years ago. I was just as eager to turn on the audiobook and listen away while I was at work this week.

Alice in Wonderland is a coming of age story. It is about having to put away the fantasy of youth and grow up. This message is not at all subtle in the story, Alice several times berates herself for not growing up. All the while she is continuing on her fantastical adventure. My favorite part of the story is at the very end. Alice rehearses her "dream" to her older sister. Alice's sister then gets to rejoin the fantasy of youth for a brief time before coming back to the responsibility of adulthood.

The tale is simple, it is a children's story. It is not a very long book, yet the very complexities in the plot make it entertaining for all ages. Even though the storyline has been rehashed and mutilated many times in our modern culture everyone should go back to the source and read this book.
5.0 étoiles sur 5 perfect format for classroom 30 octobre 2013

For the price, this particular edition is the one that works well for my classroom. I prefer hardback, but they are rarely affordable in the volumes I want. And if a book has small print, the kids just won't read it. So large print, durable paperback with an attractive cover at a cheap price is exactly what I need. You just have to train the kids to take care of the books and treat them like the true treasures they are.

Not much to say about this. Of course it's great. I bought it because I wanted to read it again, since it has been about 30 years and I don't know what I ever did with my first copy. I always preferred "Through the Looking Glass" to this one, but of course they are both classics.

I had forgotten what the actual book by this wonderful author meant and am glad to have this book to look at again and again. With so many movies out I still feel it is in the readers interest to grab this book and let their own imaginations take them to wonderland on an epic adventure.
