Présentation de l'éditeur

The first time it happened, it seemed like an impossible miracle. Bills were piling up, adding up to more money than I could ever make. Mom's hospital bills. My baby brother's tuition. My tuition. Rent. Electricity. All of it on my shoulders. And I had just lost my job. There was no hope, no money in my account, no work to be found. And then, just when I thought all hope was lost, I found an envelope in the mail. No return address. My name on the front, my address. Inside was a check, made out to me, in the amount of ten thousand dollars. Enough to pay the bills and leave me some left over to live on until I found a job. Enough to let me focus on classes. There was no name on the check, just "VRI Inc.," and a post office box address for somewhere in the city. No hint of identity or reason for the check or anything. No mention of repayment, interest, nothing…except a single word, on the notes line: "You." Just those three letters.

If you receive a mysterious check, for enough money to erase all your worries, would you cash it?

I did.

The next month, I received another check, again from VRI Incorporated. It too contained a single word: "belong."

A third check, the next month. This time, two words. Four letters. "To me."

The checks kept coming. The notes stopped. Ten thousand dollars, every month. A girl gets used to that, real quick. It let me pay the bills without going into debt. Let me keep my baby brother in school and Mom's hospice care paid for. How do you turn down what seems like free money, when you're desperate? You don't. I didn't.

And then, after a year, there was a knock on my door. A sleek black limousine sat on the curb in front of my house. A driver stood in front of me, and he spoke six words: "It's time to pay your debt."

Would you have gotten in?

I did.

It turns out $120,000 doesn't come free.

Torture.
Note générale: 1/5

A éviter donc.

Par Natasha is a Book Junkie - Publié sur Amazon.com

“You’re here because I own you, Kyrie.”

It is with great sadness and disappointment that I write this review today. I have loved every single book that I have ever read by this particular author, her stories always having the power to transport me into a world where all my senses are heightened, my emotions no longer my own, a world where I become one with the characters. However, that was not the case with this book. From reading the excerpts, I was certain this story would be right up my alley, never doubting for a second my overall enjoyment of it. But I guess not all stories are for everyone, and this one simply was not the one for me.

“I own you but you will submit to me willingly.”

The premise of the book itself is pure brilliance. Kyrie, a girl struggling to make ends meet—the only provider for a mother who requires constant medical attention, and a younger brother who is still in college—receives a mysterious but desperately needed cheque in the mail with no accompanying explanation. The cheques keep arriving month after month, their substantial value allowing Kyrie not to worry about money for the first time in her adult life, but the mystery behind them never lessens, four cryptic words on the first three cheques making it certain that nothing in life comes for free: You Belong To Me. And that there would come a day when someone would eventually come to collect.

“What—what are you going to do to me?”
“Everything. But nothing you won’t enjoy.”

A year later, her ‘benefactor’ sends for her, her compliance never being in question as the alternative of paying back the funds is unfeasible, and so the real mystery begins. A world of opulence and luxury, her every need and want met, an excessively affluent but tenaciously private man behind it all, whose attentiveness is only matched by his insistence on withholding his identity from her and gaining her trust first—the story is unravelled slowly and methodically, the chemistry between them being and remaining the focal point of the story itself.

“Have you ever really given yourself to a man before? I don’t think you have. And certainly never to a man like me.”

And so we set sail on this erotic adventure with no known course ahead of us or compass to guide us, no clue whether it would be a bumpy ride or relatively calm waters all the way, simply letting ourselves indulge in every scintillating interaction between the main characters, the constant enigma of the whole situation designed to keep our hearts racing page after page. It is a story of sexual discovery as much as it is a mystery for us to unveil, Kyrie’s gradual but willing submission to a man she knows nothing about except her own body’s reaction to him driving the story forward and setting its pace. It is first and foremost a game of sexual frustration and domination, the erotic component of the storyline overshadowing all others, even character development at times, leaving no doubt in my mind as a reader that the purpose of this story is to titillate the senses, rather than engage the mind.

“You can scream as loud as you want, sweet thing. No one can hear you.”

Regrettably, though, my senses remained unaffected. As ‘out there’ as some sex scenes were, I failed to feel anything more than a slight shiver from time to time, their mood never quite reaching my sensory receptors. And I was desperate to FEEL. I found myself wanting to skim over the most intimate scenes between them, making me question my own sanity in the process. I never connected with either of the leading characters, nothing in their given traits appealing to me on a personal level or making me understand their actions. Their behaviour felt erratic, disjointed at times, the heroine’s in particular as hers is the only voice we get to hear. Her awkward internal monologues designed to give us an insight into her feelings and doubts made me cringe, their pseudo-philosophical tone sounding out of place and forced to serve the storyline rather than providing a foundation for it. I never understood either character, simple as that, and I wish more time had been spent on moulding them into credible human beings instead of inundating our heads with unnecessary references to pop culture, garments worn by the characters or exclusive brand names. They added nothing to the overall mood of the scenes, other than a level of superficiality that I am not sure this story demanded. The entire story overflows with details, conflicting ones at times, and lacks the actual ‘glue’ keeping it together.

“It looked a bit like the dress Jennifer Lawrence wore to the SAG awards.”

When the time came to ‘assemble’ it all, the backstory plotline felt sudden and rushed, almost as if it did not belong in this book, and I walked away dissatisfied, unmoved, frustrated, never wanting to hear the words you are mine again in my life. And I am still unhappy. I am unhappy that this story is so inconsistent with this author’s previous works, I am unhappy that this industry is tailoring the stories that are written rather than the other way around, and I am unhappy that I am unhappy. Because all I sought was an escape and the only thing I wanted to escape from were these characters. But I also have no doubt in my mind that this book will find its willing audience that will love every moment of it.

First, don't begin this book until you have all day to read! This is one of those wow books. Jasinda Wilder just keeps getting better and better. Kylie meets her "mystery man" blindfolded. I felt as if I were blindfolded as well. I had no idea what this guy looked like. We learned to trust him just as Kyrie did. I was so impatient wanting to know what this guy looked like, how old he was, what he did for a living, and what awful secret that he had that would possibly make Kyrie walk away. Their meetings with the blindfold were HOT. Finally, at 46% we meet our guy. Whew!! Kyrie had to feel like the most treasured woman in the world. He worshiped her mind, body, and soul. Holy smokes, you will need a smoke after you read some of these scenes. I loved the bonus scene. No cliffhanger, but I want more!! The only complaint I would have is that I would have liked dual point of views, but it worked as written. This is another smash for Jasinda.

What makes this book different from all the other billionaire alpha books?

Eagle: The book’s biggest strength is its frame. The blurb sounds really good! But from the first page there are holes and ragged bits of plot that are either explained pretty lazily or dropped altogether. It’s been said a million times that if you’re going to write a billionaire alpha in these Fifty Shades-soaked times, it needs to be better than great.

Mistress L: I’m not one to flock to a billionaire book. If that word is in the title I will almost always avoid it. Having read the blurb on Alpha I assumed it was going to be a darker book than Wilder has given us before… Although I’m sad to report I ended up in a billionaire book regardless. It was predictable, cliched and I saw the “big secret” coming.

If the basic plot is great then where does it fall down?
Eagle: Everywhere! The character development is poor and there are some basic elements that just don’t make sense (for example, Kyrie acts as if her brother is a helpless child, when really he’s living in another city and attending university). Tension is established pretty effectively at the beginning as Kyrie is forbidden from seeing her captor, but it gets watered down by the end of the book and we end up with a syrupy mess of disconnected sex between two characters who, as it turns out, aren’t masking any hidden depths – they really are that shallow.

Mistress L: This book stopped dead for me around 70%. Keep in mind so many aspects of this story are as far-fetched as any other erotic romance, I pushed on. There were bumps along the way but I was down on my knees begging this story to pull through. The outline of this book had such promise and hope for me, but just like my professional cheerleading dreams… It was never going to happen.

But a lot of billionaire alpha books are silly and don’t make much sense…
Eagle: Yes, but they don’t cost you $6. If you’re charging that much, your book needs to be nigh-on perfect in terms of plot, execution and editing. And this book falls way short. ‘Alpha’ would be perfectly serviceable if it were going for $0.99, but the reader deserves more for this relatively high price.

Mistress L: Again this is why I don’t read billionaire books. They are usually (not always) immature, poorly written, or so over the top I can’t read them through my eye rolling. Imagine my surprise when that’s what was delivered by Alpha. And just for the record how in the F did “Alpha” make the cut for the name of this book? I agree with Eagle completely. If this book were $0.99 I think we’d have a completely different discussion. I would still feel the same but not burned half as bad.

But is the sex hot at least?
Eagle: The sex is okay. The first few sex scenes are all right, but once I got further into the story it got to be too much. Sex is great, as long as you’ve effectively drawn your characters and the reader can identify them and their motives. Instead we get lots of sex with characters we don’t really care about and with barely enough room to breathe and digest in between scenes

Mistress L: The sex started out great. There was a lot of teasing up to the big moment and I got off on it. But… All of a sudden there’s like 3 or 4 sex scenes back to back taking up about 15% of the ending. I’m sorry but that’s poor plotting in your story when you’ve made it to the end and are throwing nothing but sex scenes around when there is still the whole freaking book to wrap up. Don’t get me wrong… Sex scenes are one of the top priorities for me when reading. But if I am reading it and I start skimming the sex you know there’s a problem.

What could have made this book better for you?
Mistress L: After reading and digesting for a day I think what I really wanted was for the characters to have a better connection to one another. I wanted them to be together but as I sit here I can’t really say why. I felt like Kyrie’s internal struggles were detailed and written out to the point of overstating, but when it came to her and the hero I just didn’t feel it working.

Eagle: I agree. The characters didn’t have any chemistry. It was all tell and no show.

Was there something about the book you did like?
Mistress L: I actually really liked the idea of the book. I think that was the big draw for me. It was a unique concept and I was excited by the possibilities. It’s just too bad the promises of what was to come was the best part for me.

Eagle: I loved the concept and it could have worked really well but it just didn’t live up to its promise.

Final thoughts:
Mistress L: I can’t in good conscious recommend a book where I didn’t enjoy the last 30%. I felt like this book was written with a check list.. Alpha hero (check) desperate heroine (check) sassy black best friend (check). A $6 book is enough to give me pause on Amazon, and so far there are a lot of reviews stroking this book. If it goes on sale for $0.99 and you’ve got nothing else lined up, why not. But as is… Save yourself the time and money.

Eagle: It was the meh-est book I’ve read all year. And definitely not worth that price tag.

Is this the same author? I saw the movie Pretty Woman, I didn't need to have the author write the exact same scene with the opera gown, necklace and the flight to the opera (helicopter and not jet for a change).

The hero falls madly in love with a woman he has never even talked to. Really? Why? Because she is physically beautiful it seems. Okay, we suspend belief for that. Fine.

The hero says he is not a "Dom" and is critical of Dominants and BDSM as far as I can tell BUT, he then says things like: "I own you" and "Submit to me," and he spanks her and has to be in full control during sex. What is that about? Is he in denial or what?

The subject of money, how much the guy is spending, etc goes on and on. No plot, no realist characterization.
I read "Falling for You" and it was written completely differently. Who wrote this book?

I do not recommend Alpha to anyone. Even if you want a book just for sex (of which this book mainly is) I would choose a better author.

Terrible. It was expensive, too. I won't try this author again.

Don't tell my boss but I got very little done today. In a moment of boredom I started reading and couldn't stop. Holy crap! The situation is really bizarre but I loved the story. First you will keep wondering what he looks like then you will wonder who he is and why he's really doing it. What a great ride it is though. This was my first book by Jasinda Wilder but it won't be my last. Buy this and read it right away.

The only thing missing was an epilogue. The ending was a little rushed and left me wondering.Although the extra scene at the end did help somewhat, maybe a second book would do it. It just felt like their story was just beginning when the book ended.
