Description de l'ouvrage

15 novembre 2000 Architecture Générale
Alvaro Siza is one of the world's most respected architects. Since the 1950s he has built and taught extensively, both in Portugal and internationally. Siza's architecture is based on a unity of space and volume. It is vigorous and coherent - each work reveals a unique sensitivity to the rural or urban context to which it belongs without detracting from its functional and stylistic identity. Siza has received critical acclaim for a range of works including: the Boa Nova Tea House and Restaurant, Matosinhos (1958-63); the Borges & Irmão Bank, Vila do Conde (1978-86); the Bonjour Tristesse Residential Complex, Schlesisches Tor, Berlin (1980-4); the reconstruction of the Chiado district, Lisbon (1988-); the Galician Centre of Contemporary Art, Santiago de Compostela (1988-93) and the Portuguese Pavilion at Expo '98, Lisbon (1995-8).

Born in 1933 in Matosinhos, Portugal, Siza studied at the University of Porto, School of Architecture and worked with Fernando Távora before starting his own practice in 1958. The recipient of many international awards, Siza has been Visiting Professor at the École Polytechnique in Lausanne, Switzerland and the Graduate School of Design of Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachussetts. He continues to teach at the University of Porto, School of Architecture.

This monograph is a comprehensive study of Álvaro Siza's work and charts over forty years of buildings and projects, represented by photographs, working drawings and many of Siza's sketches. An introductory essay by Kenneth Frampton examines Siza's prolific practice and its evolution, while writings by Siza are interspersed throughout the book, offering a unique personal perspective on his work and twentieth-century architecture as a whole.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A good book of the architect of the moment! 17 mars 2001

Some people say Siza is the architect of the white! Probably, if whe can understand that the white colour of his facades is the consequence of his absolutly control of plans and forms. He is a genius! This book is a good way to show almost all works of Siza. For me there is only one book that is better than this one: "Alvaro Siza - the book, from ElCroquis".But anyway, buy this book if you want to understand the genius of Alvaro Siza.

If you want to get a fine overview of Siza's works, this book might be just fine. It inculdes a short presentation of all of his works, the major buildings are featured more extensively. There are plenty of Siza's beautiful sketches and abstract line drawings might clarify his projects sufficiently (how could the editor oversee that the faculty of Porto is mirrored?). It is remarkable that most of the photos do not present the the projects in the just finished state, but how they look like right now, making plain how gracefully Siza's buildings get older. I have to agree that Le Croquis might show his major buildings more in depth and documents far more Siza's own point of view with two long interviews, however this edition is for sure worth the money.

This monograph gives a wide-ranging coverage to both the built, as well as the unbuilt work of Alvaro Siza.
Most project entries contain sketches, images, and line drawings. The images are good quality, Siza's sketches are incredible as always, my only complaint is that the line-drawings tend to be a little small.
The essays vary in quality, but overall, this is the best monograph of Siza's work which I have seen.
I highly recommend this volume.
