Présentation de l'éditeur

Spanning decades, Amazon Chief tells Beria's story beginning with her introduction to the Amazons through her times as a companion, eventually rising to village chief.

This is the third novel in the Amazon series, overlapping the events from Amazon Companion and Amazon Challenge, but told from Beria's point of view, then moving forward well past those events.

Amazon Chief is a long novel of 228,000 words, about half again longer than the previous books.

We visit our friends from Amazon Companion and Amazon Challenge: Maya and Malora of course, Nori, Omie and Vorine, Aura, Neela and Bea, and many others. We even spend time with Tamma and Lia, the girls from White Pine we met in Amazon Challenge. When we again meet Lia, she is a mother of two young girls.

There is love. There is loss. There is hope for the future of the Amazons.

Normally I make a comment about the one stars because I feel they're unfair. This time I have to take issue with the five stars.

What the heck?! Five stars? Really? This is not Lord of the Rings, this is not Noble House. I don't care about the 6 bucks. I do care about hours and hours of my time spent on a very so so read. Stories are about character growth or conflict and resolution. The character growth was rather like a sequoia. Nothing you'd want to stick around to watch. And very slooowwww. The conflict was non existent except for some unnecessary drama by Malora acting like a witch again (I'd love to use a stronger word). Given the title I doubt its a spoiler to say that Beria is groomed to be Chief. Much of the tension is because she is unaware of the fact. This is just plain ridiculous. Surprise, you're mayor! Surprise, you're President! Nobody grooms a leader without the candidate being aware of it. There was no logic to blindsiding her with this. This book is a long long series of mildly amusing scenes from Beria's life and Amazon life. Punctuated with unamusing dull scenes of Beria's life. Which would be fine for 30 pages but not hundreds.

Roseau is one of the very few authors I re-read. There are often charming bits I love to browse back on. But the author has this tendency to go for cheap angst by having friends or loved ones blindside and torture the main character with very feeble justification and its really causing issues with the books. The trial in Fox Dish. The purple dye in Amazon Challenge. Paper thin excuses for ignoring the heroic actions of the characters and focusing in on "insubordination" and then putting them through the wringer for it. Often the justification is a singe word: Politics, Pack Politics, Vampire Politics. I'm screwing you over to shame the witnesses into testifying but I couldn't tell you that's what I'm doing ( My favorite for worst justification ever in Free to Love). I utterly loath Malora and am starting to dislike Lara. Which would be a shame because I enjoy the heck out of the Foxverse usually. if you MUST torture the main character have a VILLIAN do it. Not friends or lovers. That's what villains are for.

The tournament toward the end of the book was worthwhile. But 80 good pages out of 880 could not save this snore-fest.

Amazon Chief, and subsequent books, renewed my faith in the lesbian genre. While the idea of women warriors is not new, I was very happy to read a slightly different take on it. The book is an easy read, unlike older warrior women stories, but does make you look up a word here and there. The plot line is similar to the others, with the last 75% of the book being completely new stories. Of course the first 25% of the book is still really nice to read from a different perspective.

While there were not any obvious grammatical errors or spelling mistakes, the author did mix up names here and there. It will throw you for half a second, but it is easy to figure out what she really means.

Now, for the author being a woman or a man... I really couldn't care less. It is a well written book and that should be all that matters. Women write about male characters all the time. I find it rare that men write female characters, but it happens and sometimes it is actually good. In this case, the author may be a man or a woman, but the lack of sex scenes and the strong female presence proves that the author isn't trying to suppress women or lesbians. As a lesbian, I find it rather appalling that other lesbians won't read the book because of the gender of the author. I hoped that by asking people to accept us as we are, we would be willing to look at others as talented people rather than focus on what hangs between their legs.

Judging the book on the story, and the fact that I have read the entire series twice in two weeks, I give it five stars. I am incredibly happy about this series. I just hope that the author will finally get around to writing a Nori based story. She has a story dying to be told.

I had a few misgivings at first, given that there was a different protagonist for this book, and that it started at more or less the same place the first Amazon book started, though from a different perspective. Once I got into it, those reservations faded. There was a brief sequence where some character name typo's made things confusing (probably due to some rewrites) but other than that, fairly solid.

This story focuses almost entirely on the amazons, and not very much at all on the demons. It works, though. It does tend to run on for awhile, but it never really got boring for me. It wasn't as...contained as the usual Roseau stories.

I would like to get a story that explores demon's a bit more.

This is a great book about the future Chief of Amazons and her journey from companion to Queen. Very believable lots of laughs and some sorrow but worth the read.
