This is a truly wonderful cook book and if you're new to the vegan diet, I could't think of a better place to start. It's the kind of cookbook that makes you look at the food you just prepared and ponder "But wasn't this what I was eating before?" The recipes are the kind that you'd serve either because you want to eat comfort food, the type of meals you ate in your omnivore days, just sans the meat/eggs/dairy/ and cholesterol, or because you have a pack of omnivores coming over and you'd rather serve them a Reuben Sandwich with Potato salad (recipes found in the book) instead of explaining to them that they are about to eat "Stewed Tofu in Miso gravy" (Uh, not found in this book).

I have to say, it's nice to have a cookbook that doesn't require me to add an additional shelf to my spice cabinet or schlep myself to Whole Foods for every recipe to find some arcane ingredient.

The book also has a lot of information that'd be really useful to the incipient vegan and seasoned vegan alike. I should be a Good Vegan and say that you should read these portions because it humanizes the authors and helps you see why veganism is so crucial to animal welfare. But I'm going to be me (a decidedly Bad Vegan) and say that you should read these portions because they're really, really, funny. It's like Magic School Bus meets Veganism. You're entertained while educated.

Again, whether your cookbook shelf my be empty or near empty at this point or you've got more cookbooks than shelves, this bad boy deserves a spot.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 I've been waiting for a cookbook like this!!! 12 février 2012

When I saw this at my neighborhood bookstore, I knew I had to pick it up. I proceeded to read it cover to cover right away. This cookbook is incredibly amusing and compassionate.

So many cookbooks promoting veganism focus on health and include a plethora of difficult "foodie" ingredients. This cookbook has a unique focus that I've yearned for: veganism that is motivated by kindness to animals first and foremost. I appreciate those who are health nuts, but for those of us who just want to be kind to our animal friends this is a book that serves to mimic the foods we've grown up with. Their mission: to make veganism accessible to the masses. Do they succeed: YES YES YES!!! They do not bash processed vegan products, but include them in an American diet. Faux meats? Plenty. Faux dairy? That too. There's a chapter on how to make a complete traditional (but vegan) thanksgiving dinner from main dish to dessert.

All American is additionally quite creative. I laughed out loud at some of the interesting passages, including hilarious commentary on what NOT to say to newbie vegans! The table of contents is even organized in the form of a full-color menu.
The prose made my heart sing, and the recipes are lovely. The BBQ Ribz one is especially great.

If you adore vegetables...this may not be your cookbook. There are very few recipes for veggie dishes. There are, however, amazing brunch dishes including creative techniques to mimic real scrambled eggs and grocery lists plus menu plans that make the vegan lifestyle easy. And, most processed vegan foods are still significantly more healthy than their nonvegan counterparts.

The Winograds are kind authors, and cooks after my own heart. I've been hoping someone would put together a cookbook that did not pretend to be health nutty and was compassion-based first and foremost. For those of us who are all about the animals and aren't trying to be perfect in the diet realm, this is amazing. Bravo to both of you and THANK YOU!!!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 One of the best vegan cookbooks on the market today! 18 septembre 2011
Par Little Darling - Publié sur Amazon.com
I have cooked a lot over the years. I learned how to cook from vegan cookbooks and I still enjoy learning new and exciting ways to make food from other perspectives.
I bought the book a few weeks ago but hadn't opened it yet until this morning. I searched my fridge for as many components as the Vegan Hash called for and made it as close to the recipe as I could (used Gimme Lean Vegan Sausage in place of Seitan, Trader Joes Wild Rice Combo for the white rice) and it was INCREDIBLE! We have so much left over too! This is an inexpensive, mega-delicious recipe to make. Many people assume vegan cooking is costly but when you use simple staples, like the ones in American Vegan, it's inexpensive, filling and tastes great. What more could you ask for? Perhaps someone to cook it for you? That's all I can think of.

I also made the Cashew Cream so I can make the Faux Fried Chicken tonight with some collard greens and some mac.

I highly recommend this cookbook and look forward to creating more vegan delicacies for everyone I know!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Best Vegan Comfort Food Recipes 3 février 2012

I bought this book upon learning of Nathan Winograd's background in working tirelessly for shelter animals. As a volunteer at a shelter where he started a no-kill program many years ago (and probably one of the best shelters in the US, no doubt!), I felt compelled to buy this book.

I was so glad I did. Not only does the book have some amazing recipes of all the comfort foods many Americans enjoy (veganized!), but it covers issues such as shelter animals, the art of vegan substitution, important moments in vegan history, and humorous bits such as "Things Vegans Should NEVER Say When Discussing Veganism with Non-Vegans." This isn't just one of the best vegan cookbooks around, but one of the funniest and enjoyable to read as well.

Some of my favorite recipes from All-American Vegan so far have been the Peanut Butter Cups and Vegan Corn Dogs. The peanut butter cups came out even better than Reeses (and are super easy to make) and the corn dogs were fried, delicious, but not greasy.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants a more cruelty-free lifestyle, wants to transition to veg foods without giving up the meals they grew up with, or even a long time vegetarian or vegan wanting to try something new or win over some omnivores. You won't be disappointed.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Warning: KINDLE CONTENT has major issues! 13 mars 2014

From what I could get read of the first chapter or so this looks like an interesting book. However the Kindle formatting is horrific. You have entire sentences showing up in the wrong place on the wrong page - so you are reading and all the sudden there is the "missing" paragraph from 2 pages ago in the middle of your paragraph. Then there are entire pages where every letterisstrungtogetherasonewordjustlikethis. Some content just seems to be missing - but it might be in there perhaps in a later chapter I'm not sure. The font gets large, then small, then changes colors and can barely be read. It is, in my opinion, not readable at all. If you are going to get this one get the paperback version! I ended up returning for a refund. The first, and only, time I've ever done that and I have over 3000 books from amazon. I hope the authors can get this fixed - because I'd like to actually read the book but I don't do dead tree books any longer.
