An Authoritative Tour de Pours 28 octobre 2013
Par Amazon Customer - Publié sur Amazon.com

This book clearly needs to be made into an app. Why? The hundreds of tasting notes alone will come in handy for anyone who has stood in a liquor store aisle, confused over which whiskey bottle to buy, or for bartenders or serious enthusiasts who need a helpful reference guide to what they're pouring. What's more: Risen provides a deeper, elucidating look into the intricacies of whiskey-making, its history, and why it has now resurged after years of relative neglect by American drinkers. And all of this in a beautifully designed book that looks and feels like an absolute treasure in your hands. It's an essential bookshelf or bar-side addition for whiskey drinkers everywhere.

Riddled with errors 7 février 2014
Par Romantic Whiskers - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié
Given all the hype it received, I was very eager to get my hands on Risen's whiskey book. I hadn't gotten 15 pages before I was left outraged at how many minor mistakes were made in describing the process of making whiskey. Risen got very basic issues, like mash backset, wrong, as well as some lesser known matters relating to chemistry.

Going through the rest of the book, I also discovered many, many errors in the descriptions of this whiskey and that whiskey. There are about two dozen instances where the book either contradicts itself, or says something about how a given whiskey was made or what the maker does that contradicts what the distillery itself says. Plus, some of the bottle art is mismatched.

If you know about this book, it's because Risen is a NYT Deputy Editor, and his connections got it a big push. Strictly on its merits, the version I read should have been hung up in fact checking and sent back to the author. It really is a sloppy piece of work from a guy who doesn't know half as much about whiskey as he thinks he does.

A Top Shelf Whiskey Companion 27 octobre 2013
Par billson - Publié sur Amazon.com

Several reasons whiskey lovers need this book alongside their bottles. Mr. Risen confirms his reputation as a serious and insightful critic that he built through the years with his Atlantic beer and whiskey blog. He gives credit where due but is not afraid to call out a fad. This lends credibility to the Michelin style star system. Also, the history of American whiskeys here is outstanding. And the book itself is a work of art, a beautiful piece to display on your bookshelf or your bar.

serviceable guide 5 décembre 2013
Par T. Burke - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Relié Achat vérifié
If you are interested in a credible, well written introduction, the first section is excellent. If you have already spent time reading reviews and discussions on the better blogs, and have some tastings under your belt, I would suggest you probably will find little value added by purchasing this.
"Canadian Whisky" by Davin de Kergammeaux" Covering similar territory from our northern neighbor was more enjoyable and rewarding in both content and format.
A quibble with Risen's book is why with so much blank page space, the font size is so small and almost grey scale.
For those new to the subject, this would be a nice stocking stuffer.

exactly what I expected 28 mars 2014

THe book isn't the size of a regular book, rather it is thiner than average, but this doesn't detract from the book. It is very informative, and is a great gift book for someone that LOVES spirits
