A Top 10 Kindle Bestseller from a New York Times Bestselling Author!
London, 1666: Amethyst Goldsmith makes dazzling jewelry, but her future isn't nearly as bright as the pieces she creates. Though custom dictates she wed her father's apprentice, her heart rebels against the match. In mere days Amy will be condemned to a stifling, loveless marriage, and she sees no way out--until the devastating fire of 1666 sweeps through London, and tragedy lands her in the arms of a dashing nobleman who knows a diamond in the rough when he sees it...

Colin Chase, the Earl of Greystone, has his future all figured out. He's restoring his crumbling castle and estate to its former glory, and the key to its completion is his rich bride-to-be. But the Great Fire lays waste to his plans, saddling him with trouble--in the form of a lowly shopkeeper's daughter with whom he's most inconveniently falling in love...

This being a free book; I don't believe in lavishing praise if not merited.
Just could not and did not get into this book. The whole is confusing and disjointed and too many modern expressions and words. In a suposedly "period" book, names like Ford and Kendra?
Just says it all, doesn't it?

Amethyst "Amy" Goldsmith, daughter of a jeweler, is an accomplished and talented jewelry maker who loves her craft and has a great passion for her work but her personal life is hardly as fulfilling. In just two weeks she will be wed to a man whom she does not love - a man who plans to keep her away from her work to make babies and keep his house. Amy longs for love but will not hurt her father by backing out of the unwanted marriage. One day Colin Chase "Earl of Greystone" walks into her family's store and they make an immediate connection but, sadly, he is far out of her league.
These first few chapters are wonderful and really hooked me. The historic details are interesting and plentiful and Amy is presented as a likable and compassionate character full of life, dreams and motivation. Then a devastating fire destroys her life and changes everything. She now has the opportunity to take charge of her life but first is rescued by Colin who takes her to his home so she can heal from her physical and emotional wounds. She quickly finds love and acceptance amongst Colin's siblings but receives only the cold shoulder from Colin who wants her gone as soon as possible. Amy decides she wants Colin and comes up with one excuse after another to stick around.
It was Colin's attraction to Amy that impelled him to rescue her and it is that same attraction that makes him want her out of his sight as soon as possible. Colin is betrothed to a "titled" woman and has already spent a good portion of the woman's dowry and sees no way to get out of it. And, lets be real, he doesn't want to. For the majority of the story money and titles are more important to Colin than love and it's here that the book lost the most of its appeal for me.
Colin and Amy are wildly attracted to each other and obviously belong together but he stubbornly refuses to break off his betrothal. This makes him come across as extremely selfish. Amy deserved so much better. Amy, unfortunately, loses some of her charm because she is forced into the role of pining away for the stubborn Colin instead of concentrating on getting back on her feet. The jewelry crafting, which was such a huge part of her life, takes a back to seat to thoughts of Colin and this was very disappointing.
This story is a good choice if you like your books steeped in historic detail and don't mind love-stubborn heroes. The author has an obvious love for her time period and weaves in interesting tidbits whenever possible. Although Colin didn't turn out to be my idea of a hero I do look forward to the forthcoming stories about Colin's siblings who were lovable characters.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Top notch debut, GEM of a book! 21 mars 2001

Amethyst is one definite keeper. I should have taken the reviews to heart and read only when I had time to finish, but I couldn't wait. I stayed up till 3 in the morning (and still some way to go) but had to go to work the next day. Still, it was very much worth it.
Amethyst (Amy) Goldsmith is a jewelry maker who survived The Fire, aided by the hero, Colin Chase, Earl of Greystone. They had met briefly five years ago in the King's coronation parade. Although there is an instant attraction between them, Colin can't pursue it, as he's already betrothed to a highborn (albeit generously endowed) cold fish, Lady Priscilla Hobbs. He then tries all ways to get Amy off his hands as she's too distracting for his resolve to leave her alone. She, on the other hand, has other ideas and thinks of one excuse after another to put off her departure. Thus started the Earl's downfall (though he thoroughly enjoys it) as he finds himself irrevocably drawn to Amy's charms, warmth and beauty.
The story is interspersed with fascinating historical snippets by a deft hand that interest buffs like me. Lauren Royal really knows her craft. Her research was thorough and I was totally immersed in the Restoration period; transported back in time to the tragedy of the great fire, the cultures and elaborate dress of its people. Of course, what made the book so memorable were all the main and equally enthralling supporting cast. Little Mary was a particular favorite.
The characters were all well defined. I couldn't agree more that the amazing chemistry between Amy and Colin was a joy to watch - they were practically soul mates (except towards the end, when they were not forthcoming with each other). There were also generous doses of sparkling wit, humor and sensual scenes throughout the book, not forgetting the oneness you feel with the cast. Royal doesn't read like a debut writer at all. If this work is anything to go by, I predict bigger and better things for this bright new star. I'm off to look for the sequel starring Jason, Colin's elder brother. Thank you so much, Lauren.

I don't even know where to start... I am absolutely puzzled by the many multiple star reviews.

This book is set in Englad, in the 1600's. The language of the characters is that belonging to someone born in the 20th century. The author has absolutely no feel for the era, reading it is odd and thoroughly annoying because even though the era is mentioned over and over again (by talking about the Great Plague and The Great Fire of London) the characters are having conversations where they use very modern expressions and words (i. e. "for real?"; "gender", "ruminating", etc, etc). Reading it doesn't do anything to bring that era back to life for me.

I am glad it was a free book. It is rare that I cannot finish a book but... I cannot finish this one. Reading it is giving me a headache because of the lack of consistency. You simply cannot write a book in modern English and imagine that your reader will somehow get the feel of the 1600's.

I love regency romance. As I am a recent widow I look for those with humour and intrique as an escape. This book very much met those requirements. I went to sleep last night with a laugh and a sense of contentment. I definetly recommend this book.

I cannot quite put my finger on why this book was so boring to read and drag difficult to finish luckily it was free .What I hated there were three mentions of Spoiler.................... shockers of all shockers babies dying in womb which I found appalling and not at all funny as the author wanted us to see it, the hero was supposed to be a prankster but came across as an immature idiot and the people laughing at the not at all funny pranks were ridiculous . He tell the kings mistress to pretend she was pregnant , spread the word the. say she lost the baby ? and that is funny ??? my stomach clenched at the authors lack of insensitivity to any woman out there that my have lost a baby!Later the heroine says that if she were ever to fall pregnant by the villain shed poison the baby or throw herself down the stairs , lovely female again what was this author thinking? The villain says that if she is pregnant he would kill the baby, there is even a sex scene where baby in womb is discussed together with seamen in womb ,gross!
This author has a morbid fascination with babies and wombs that left me quite disgusted. Other issues were it was not at all period no propriety , in one scene the hero's brother barges in the room where she is sitting naked continues to talk as if it is normal and even places two kisses on her cheek. We are forever told she is shy but there is nothing shy about her we are forever told he wants her but through out the book he constantly has second thoughts about her.His other jokes include pretending sb was murdered and staging a bloody murder scene!how lovely?! He supposedly now is teaching his kids pranks God forbid ! She fall half in love with the king because his charming ????A morbid modern mess trying at historical! Oh yeah and my final peeve they pretend to be good people rescuing toddler who had no family but God forbid they keep her and soon pass the problem off to a woman to raise in the village yet the seem to want to keep and protect the heroine with a vengeance you would think they would show the same compassion for a baby but no again!Never again this author not for me I think this may be the first time I erase a free book!
