Présentation de l'éditeur

Volume 44 of 54 of Jules Verne's "Extraordinary Voyages", first printed in 1897. Set in the far south, an expedition uncovers a stray iceberg with a dead body on it, with a note indicating a tale of murder and deceit on another nearby ship. Inspired to rescue the remaining crew members of this ship, Jeorling (this story's narrator) leads an journey to rescue the stranded sailors. Accident, betrayal, and tragedy deprive him of men and resources, but Jeorling strives on towards an undiscovered wonder in the arctic. This particular edition is reproduced from English-edition public works, and is presented simply with an emphasis on straightforward presentation, attractiveness and continuity of appearance, with each title in the "Extraordinary Voyages" sporting a journal-style brown cover accompanied by a cover illustration and quote from the text on the back cover.

Great book - too many errors 24 mai 2007
Par e2ipiand1 - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
The number of misspelled and missing words in this book make it very hard to read at times.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story and will try to find a better copy.

Adventure/Science Fiction 5 février 2011
Par The Old Prospector - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle Achat vérifié
This is one of Jules Verne's lesser known works. The novel supposes that Edgar A. Poe's "The Narrative of A. Gordon Pym" was a true story. In "An Antarctic Mystery" a ship is searching for survivors of Pym's voyage. There was one problem with the Kindle version: "Quotation marks" were replaced with ???three question marks??? at each end of a quotation. This is a bit distracting. Other than that I liked the book.

A rediscovery of great writing 28 avril 2013
Par Linda S. Burson - Publié sur Amazon.com

I had never read this Verne story, but just had to pick it up after reading Poe's Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, which I had never read either. I had seen the Narrative & the Mystery referred to in something else I read recently - Map of the Sky, I think, and learned of the connection between the two novels. Anyway, I rediscovered why I have always loved both writers, having read other tales and stories and poems by them. Beautiful use of the English language, and no dumbing-down here.

Read both - Poe's Narrative first, then Verne's Mystery. They connect - I didn't know that, despite being an English teacher. Two great adventure stories about the South Pole and about the character of men. A thank you to the author of Map of the Sky - de Palma(?)!!!

Issues with digitizing. 7 mars 2011
Par Raymond E. Keeler - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle Achat vérifié
When they digitized this book, the double quotation marks ("), apostrophes ('), ellipses (...), and degree symbols (°) were all replaced by one or more question marks. As a result, it was sometime difficult to read. Moreover, there are numerous optical character recognition (OCR) errors that were introduced during the digitizing process. These seem to get more numerous the further you get into the book. But the story is great and the price can't be beat.

Imagine being left alone in the Antarctic... 15 septembre 2009
Par Christine Richardson - Publié sur Amazon.com
One of the most interesting books ever written - think about it, Edgar Allen Poe, writes a book, and hes books are strange enough, but Verne, brilliant and who's books went from adventure, mystery, space travel, inner earth travel, inventions, like the submarine, megalomaniacs like Nemo, scientific experiments gone wild, and here he is writing a sequel to Poe's book.

I wont reveal the ending, as is an unwritten rule with this book, but its amazing. Imagine being left alone in the Antarctic?

And don't worry about reading Poe's book, I never did, and it made no difference.

Enjoy An Antarctic Mystery.
