Présentation de l'éditeur

In this collection of more than thirty essays, political satirist Jack Ohman explores a wide range of topics about fly fishing - such as falling in, fishing records, getting your kids to fish with you, and how not to tie flies (to name only a few), exploring the obsession with the sport that can drive men and women mad. This title is generously illustrated with more than fifty new Ohman cartoons.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Angler Management- Proof that cartoonist Jack Ohman is a fantastic wordsmith as well as a marvelous cartoonist! 30 décembre 2009
Par Larry Sawyer - Publié sur Amazon.com

You could set an atomic clock by the frequency with which I laughed out loud when I read Jack Ohman's new hardcover book, Angler Management: The Day I Died While Fly Fishing. Ohman, one of the most biting editorial cartoonists of the past 25 years, has found a way to translate his wry wit from the visual to the written word, and pretty much nothing is lost in translation. Here's a guy who has been drawing cartoons since he was 13 years old, and after 37 years or so of honing his craft, his voice has found a new outlet- and it's marvelously funny. It really makes no difference whether you fish or not, nor does it matter if you do fish, but not with a fly rod.

Jack's style is simple, straightforward, and effective as hell. He observes some seemingly inconsequential aspect of fly fishing, laces his observation with the hyperbole that it deserves, and then slaps you in the face with his new version of this observation, and 99.5% of the time it's funny. And sometimes, oftentimes, it's really, really funny. And he does this over and over. In the first chapter alone I laughed aloud probably ten times. What's amazing about this little feat of his is that I know pretty much nothing about fly fishing, and I still found this stuff tremendously entertaining.

Even as he waxes philosophical about primal urges, the food chain, and PETA vis-à-vis catch and release, he still effortlessly slides in a punch line: "...We fish to indulge in a primal urge that we don't really understand in our Drive Thru/Fast Food/Supermarket paradigm, and at least in fly fishing, we can throw them back to live another day. There is no catch and release duck hunting."

"But it would be cool to try it."

Buy this book and buy several copies while you're at it. One to keep, and the others for the fisher-people in your life. It's a wonderful read.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Must reading for fly fishermen and for those thinking about trying fly fishing. 7 juillet 2010

Ohman has obviously spent a lot of time fly fishing and observing other fly fishermen. Fly fishing is a complex and potentially frustrating endeavor. Those without a good sense of humor should avoid fly fishing or be prepared to spend time and money on anger management. All of Jack's books on fly fishing are worth your time.

As a fly fisherman who has gone through many of the situations which are portrayed in this book, it brought to mind in a satirical manner as well as in cartoon fashion those many situations we find ourselves in this sport. As good light reading and reflections for ourselves, it brings out topics and situations which should ground us a bit in how we sometimes conduct ourselves while fly fishing.

If you think all fly fishing books are either poorly written manuscripts rejected by magazines (such as) Great Wild Nymph World or overly poetic and maudlin imitations of Thoreau, you should read "Angler Management" and see what a master essayist and illustrator who thoroughly understands fishing's foibles can do. Jack Ohman's work is by turns raucous and sublime, autobiographical yet telling stories many can relate to with ease. An absolute joy for those who could not catch any fish to save anyone's life as well as for people who live to cast (and sometimes laugh and cry at their results).
