Once the Artwork was Liberated... 24 avril 2013

Anna K's deck is absolutely beautiful. I was captivated first by seeing it on a YouTube video and then went to Anna K's website to see all the cards. They were stunning. I was ready to purchase it through her, but found that Llewellyn was publishing the deck as well. Given that I was in the US, I opted for the less expensive route and ordered from Llewellyn.

There are minor changes from what Anna herself put out to these - one being Anna's have no borders and the titles of the cards are unobtrusively placed in the artwork. When I got these, I only had two complaints:

First - the black border really, really, really detracts from the beauty of the artwork. Anna's cards, many of them anyway, are so open and free - with figures that look off into the distance, that to box them in was almost criminal. As soon as I got them, I cut away the borders, except the bottom (which I'm leaving until I'm more familiar with the deck and it will eventually go too).

This helped me with my second issue - the cards are really wide. They felt more like oracle cards in my hands than tarot, and when I trimmed of the borders, suddenly I felt the familiar shape of the cards that I love. Slim and long. Even cutting off the borders did not make the cards into a mini-deck (as would happen with other decks with larger borders).

So, those two things aside - this deck is just stunning. The five of rods (five of wands) has got to be my most favorite interpretation of Rider Waite - she knew that in the RW deck, the five of rods wasn't an actual fight, but a friendly competition (per A.E. Waite's own words). Though my favorite card in the entirety of the deck is the eight of swords - what Anna did with it is so beautiful and adds so much more to even the RW version.

I highly, highly recommend this deck. If you want the actual ones, Anna is still selling them on her site until she runs out, per her agreement with Llewellyn. After that, these will be the only ones you can get. If you don't mind cutting off borders to liberate the beauty of the art, then get this one and pay a little less.

Stunningly beautiful, vibrant, bright, and full of figures that really bring the cards to life. Well worth the buy and I'm so very glad I invested. Kudos Anna K.!

EDIT: I noticed the picture shown here is NOT what the cards look like. The border on each side is about 1/4 inch, solid black, with the bottom being a bit wider and containing the title of the card.

Great addition to my collection 26 avril 2013

I like this deck very much. The artwork is exactly the same as the art on the second self-published edition, which I also own. That edition had very thick cards and made it difficult to shuffle, so I rarely used it.

The new edition has great cardstock -- shuffles like a dream. The cards are a little bigger, and it is easier to see details. They are also a bit brighter.

All in all, I am very satisfied with this new version, and I'm very happy that I decided to get it.

My favorite deck among my collection 8 juin 2013

I must confess, that I feel into the habit of purchasing many pretty decks that caught my eye and ended up in confusion when doing readings. I had to step back a while and clear the cobwebs.

Then the Anna K came out and immediately caught my eye. I did a check on other sites to see what others thought of this deck and I was impressed enough to purchase it. When the deck arrived, something new happened, the card meanings were so clear and it has been my favorite deck ever since. The lwb was done nicely and it's not to wordy to cause you to want to just read over the words instead of absorbing them.

This deck has re initiated my desire to learn and practice tarot readings.

Not the most beautiful deck I own 19 juillet 2013

I have some much more beautiful decks, but I have NONE with more energy and intuitive connection than this one. From the moment I opened the box and sorted through the deck I was caught by the power of these cards. There are some new and different spreads in the back of the book and I'm reading, for the second time, the artist/designer's take on tarot reading and this deck in particular. It's a little pricy but well worth it, in my opinion.
And the art will grow on you, the people are down to earth ordinary with great meaning in their dress and expressions.

down-to-earth and yet profound 16 août 2014
Par Wolf - Publié sur Amazon.com
I bought this deck more than a half year ago, and I'm still using it frequently. This is the perfect tarot deck for people who like a down-to-earth and yet profound approach to (their own) inner landscapes. It is much in the Rider-Waite tradition, though not at all a clone. The author's very particular point of view adds a lot of engrossing ideas, sometimes enriching or even replacing the traditional symbolism with intuitively understandable images, sometimes connecting cards to each other not only by interpretation but also visually, for example the figure of the angel in the Judgement and the Death cards (one of my favorites).
Every card tells a story - even the Pages, Knights, Queens, Kings and Aces. These stories never confine the scope of interpretation, they rather get started the reader's imagination and understanding. Each of the cards convey their meaning through carefully chosen and lovingly painted detail - through landscapes, situations, faces, colors. Ambivalences are displayed openly, there's no leveling out or fear of the darker aspects of life.
Thus in my opinion the cards are equally suited for beginners and experienced users who like an emotionally rich and picturesque deck to work with.
In addition the booklet which comes with the deck gives a compacted and nice to read introduction to the tarot in general and to the author's personal approach. Even though it doesn't claim to be more than this it may add some refreshing aspects for experienced tarot readers as well.
The only drawback is the design of the box. I wouldn't have looked twice at the Anna.K Llewellyn edition, if I hadn't seen the author's own edition at a friend's. Don't let yourself be fooled by the box. The cards are simply gorgeous. I'm still debating with myself if I should get the author's edition as well, as my deck starts to look well used...
