Oprah Winfrey was right about her high reagrds for his story. Anna Karenina, a remarkable work of art by one of the few mega-novelists of all times is an ageless story that is more real than fiction. I decided to read a copy of this book on my way to vacation last the summer and ended up spending most of my first week being glued to the book. Though it is a Russian story of a century and a half ago, its essence still resonates today.

Anna who is married to the wealthy and older Karenin lives a life of comfort without any excitement, a life that is full of routines and no zest. It is a life she had become used to until she meets the elegant Vronsky and falls in love. Now she must pay the price of adultery or seek marital stability and forgo the echoes of her heart, a soul searching trial that destabilizes the life of her family and that of her lover. In essence she abandons the meaning for her life and pursues the zest of life.

On the other hand is Levine who is in search of the meaning of life and abandons the zest of life for a purposeful life that includes a family, ideas on the advancement of humanism, being at peace with ones world and hard work in is farm and being at peace with God.

In a way, both Levine and Anna can not be blamed for opting considering one choice above the other. They all wanted happiness without having evil intentions and found a balance between the zest of life and the search of its meaning in their own different ways, hurting and find love in the process and in the end, enriching and destroying themselves in their different ways. A highly recommended read and the most insightful love story I have ever read. The Union Moujik, Doctor Zhivago , Eugene Onegin are some of the other books set in Russia that I enjoyed alongside Anna Karenina.

I never thought I'd get through 800 pages in 1 week!!! 17 janvier 1999

I started reading this book as a challenge to myself...and found myself getting completely caught up in its fascinating characters and fast-moving plotlines. The story is timeless (although a background in 19th century Russian history would have made some of the political themes and the social pressures felt by the characters more meaningful to me). Its so easy to be captivated by the characters. At times they are so flawed and so disillusioned that you want to jump inside the pages and kick some sense into them! But this was a wonderful novel--don't be frightened by its length!!

Note on the edition 16 septembre 2010

In 2004 CRW released an abridged version of Anna Karenina in the Collector's library -a collection of very small well-made hardbacks. Most of their offerings in the collection are unabridged but there was the occasional title which would seem to be too large for the small 4x6 format. At some point they decided to go ahead and publish longer works uncut and nice fat little volumes of some of Dickens' novels appeared. Later an entire Don Quixote appeared but with a smaller print than other books in the collection.

This year (2010), to my delight, they decided to re-release Anna Karenina unabridged in honor of the 100th anniversary of Tolstoy's death. It's a nice thick little volume. I am happy they decided to go with the standard sized print.

The translation is the Maude. If you're going to buy the Maude and not a newer translation, this is THE edition to get. It has a cloth cover, ribbon marker, gilded page edges and a sturdy sewn binding. It's a very well made book that is smaller than the cheapo paperbacks. I was contemplating buying an Everyman's Library edition until I learned they were coming out with it in this collection.

Small is definitely beautiful.

Anna Karenina was wonderful, an automatic page turner 14 octobre 2014

Anna Karenina was wonderful, an automatic page turner, I couldn't put the book down! This book goes deep into people's emotions, needs and desires. This book was very long but is still a good read that tells a story of love and courage, it gets the reader wondering what will come of everyones lives, what will happen next?Tolstoy is a phenomenal writer and just knows how to use ordinary events and characters to examine war, religion, feminism and any other things. His work is very characterized by a not so complicated style of writing and his work has deep insight into human nature. If you Like The Scarlet Letter, You'll Love Anna Karenina even more.

Anna Karenina 9 mars 2010

No one will be able to review this title as Amazon did not give enough detail about it in order for someone to order and read it. It is most important to include the translator or publisher when advertizing a Tolstoy title. "Original version by Tolstoy" tells the purchaser nothing.

Much More Than a Love Story 19 septembre 2011
Par Sir Furboy - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
I have been reading this for the group read, but this month I just kept reading through to the end. Tolstoy's works are famously long, but they are also very interesting - and this book surprised me with its Christian message. Ostensibly following Anna Karenina through the death of her marriage, a doomed love affair and her eventual demise, this book could equally be named for Levin, a character that seems to be based largely on Tolstoy. In Levin we see a struggle to lead a life of compasion and quiet morality informed by his Christian faith, whilst in Anna we see the terrible consequences hypocrisy in society as it publically condemns her love affair but privately winks at it.

And whilst we feel for Anna and her husband and her lover, and her son - we see greater aprobation for the chattering classes of the hypocritical society. This is a wonderful work because it brings out so much that is hidden beneath a veneer of respectability. It is also wonderful for its characterisations - especially of a certain hunting dog!

All in all I was very glad I read this book. It has led me to understand Tolstoy's Christian Anarchism better too, and the ideas in the book are engaging, challenging, forward thinking for their time and often just so right!
