Présentation de l'éditeur

The series with over a million books sold!

The business of love is dangerous.

For Jennifer Kent, a recent MBA graduate who has been searching for work in Manhattan for four long months, time and money are running out. If she doesn't find work soon, she'll need to return to her native Maine, where the job situation is even more bleak.

And where her abusive parents lie in wait.

But when an unorthodox arrangement is proposed, Jennifer decides to take it. She agrees to be the "girlfriend" of Alexander Wenn, the reluctant, billionaire CEO of Wenn Enterprises, who is so devastatingly good looking, he needs a beautiful woman like Jennifer on his arm to "keep the wolves at bay."

In this case, the wolves are other women, all of whom vie for his attention so aggressively, they keep him from focusing on business at the exclusive events he must attend. It's there that deals are cut. What they want is his money and his power. Damaged by a past event, the only thing Alex wants to do is focus on work. And to forget the past.

But can Jennifer deny their white-hot chemistry? As she's swept into this glittering otherworld of society and big business, she finds herself struggling to keep from falling for Alex, an almost impossible feat she nevertheless must meet.

Armed with her MBA, Jennifer Kent knows about business. But what she doesn't know is what could destroy her--the business of protecting her own heart. And maybe her own life.

This is really a novella. Just when the story starts to build it ends until the next volume. Would rather wait for the completed volumes and read it as one novel.

This book was just a tease. Like a soap opera on Friday when the cliffhanger occurs. I don't like books that don't finish. I appreciate series where some of the same characters are in the next books, but I like to finish a story when I read a book. This is like a deceptive cadence in music. I wish I had never read this book. It is so unfulfilling to end in the middle of a scene. So glad it was free so I didn't waste my money. Does not make me want to try any of this author's other books!

This book should have been one volume and has morphed into three with a possible 4 only as a money maker,
not as a work of good fiction. And the story, wow! Talk about fiction. Here is a 25 year old woman who is gorgeous, built like a goddess, an MBA, a brain but no job, lives in a dinky apt., has no idea how divine she is and is a virgin with no dating experience who lands a job with a drop dead gorgeous billionaire to be his escort at $200,000 starting salary, but as destitute as she is, and one step from abject poverty, she says she will only do it for $300,000 and gets the position which requires no sex, just her to keep the women away from her boss so he can conduct business. She gets all the designer clothes and jewels to keep, one of which is a Valentino creation costing $20,000. And of course, the billionaire falls in love with her at first sight, and she interjects her ideas into how he should do business
and gives him an idea of how to do a deal which he (dah!)never thought of but she, Miss Genius, fresh out of business school with no experience, conceived and convinced him to use. Volume one was serialized into volume 2, volume 3 and possibly volume 4.
Vol 1 is free and that is about what it is worth. Save your money because the way this author is going, there may be volume 20.

Don't waste your money like I did, I bought the second and third volumes.
I get that every story has its themes and lessons but the way the themes were addressed felt more like it was a direct lesson instead of it casually coming up in conversation.
Plus I felt like the author was trying to get us to sympathise with how tough authors have it when it comes to writing books and how demanding kindle readers ares.. She had a character who was an Amazon author who constantly complained about how tough being an author was.

Problematic characterization: Mary Sue protagonist who protests consistently throughout the story every time someone compliments her beauty, intelligence, and splendid backside. She also suffers from horrible judgement: she buys a $3,000 suit for her job interview when she's broke as a joke, takes a job as a paid escort and thinks it won't be a disaster, then when it turns into a disaster on the very first night (SURPRISE) she eventually forgives him and asks him to take her virginity.

Then there's the alpha male hero, hereafter referred to as Sexy Jerk, who has a tantrum due to jealousy* and intentionally tries to humiliate Mary Sue, and then physically hurts her**. Then, the 2-dimensional secondary characters try to convince her to give Sexy Jerk another chance (WHAT).

Problematic dialogue: TL;DR about so many, many things: business deals and the moguls who make them, fashion, restaurants, martinis, her roommate's book... one can easily just flip page entire pages and not miss a thing. Yawn. This goes hand-in-hand with the pacing, which alternated between half-speed, don't-skip-a-detail snail's pace and racing like a cheetah on amphetamines through scenes that needed a bit more exposition. And then there's the pretty gross interaction we're treated to, about how to drop a massive deuce in order to flatten the tummy in preparation for a big night in a tight dress. Really? We already have to cope with the protagonist's stupidity, and now we're forced to endure thinking about her bowel movements?

So, yeah, it's bad, but the part that irritates me the most is how this and its "sequels" are really just one book that would probably come in at about 150,000 words if the author didn't cut each off at about 50k words, creating artificial tension at cliffhangery moments in a transparent arm-twisting attempt to get readers to purchase the next volume.

Two problems with this:
1. If she hadn't padded the story with so much irrelevant TL:DR crapola, otherwise known as "tightening one's prose", the story would have come in at a tidy 100k and been a more enjoyable and consistent read. The way it is now is vastly irritating, thus making the reader less likely to buy those next volumes.

2. The characters are so obnoxious, we don't care what happens next, thus have no motivation to get the next 2 books.

Now *I'm* getting TL;DR. Long story short: bad story is bad. And now for the footnotes:

* Even though they have met exactly twice for a total of maybe a half-hour, and are in a professional, non-romantic relationship that they both clearly state and agree to when the job is offered.

** Because she states that another man is handsome and then two other dudes succumb to her amazing hotness (which, again, baffles her) and try to buy her drinks
