Présentation de l'éditeur

Do you suffer from panic, anxiety, and fear in your day-to-day life? Do you often avoid social situations, activities like driving, or even going to the store because of a fear of being overwhelmed or triggering a panic attack? You might be interested to know that anxiety disorders are the most common mental health disorders in the United States.

In Anxiety and Avoidance, psychologist and anxiety disorder expert Michael Tompkins presents a universal protocol to help you cope with anxiety, panic, and fear, regardless of your particular mental health diagnosis. This universal protocol is based on David H. Barlow's "unified protocol," and is a cognitive behavioral approach. Tompkins also draws on mindfulness-based therapies such as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) that have been used successfully in the treatment of anxiety disorders for years.

The book includes present-moment awareness (mindfulness) techniques, motivational tools for overcoming experiential avoidance, and cognitive tools for reframing anxiety and fear. In addition, you will learn how to use your personal values as a vehicle for lasting change. While most anxiety treatments have focused on symptom reduction, this book teaches you the skills needed to better handle the underlying emotional reactions that lead to anxiety and panic in the first place.

If you are ready to stop avoiding situations that cause you to panic and get back to living a full life, this book is a powerful resource that can help you make a lasting change using an innovative, transdiagnostic approach.

In Anxiety and Avoidance, Dr. Tompkins successfully highlights the important components of effective cognitive behavioral treatment for anxiety. Those of us who have spent decades studying scientifically supported treatments understand the reasons for the various anxiety protocols. However, consumers often have difficulty learning about and choosing between the approaches available to them. This workbook offers a solution. In it, the author focuses on the core mechanisms that maintain all anxiety disorders. Anxiety and Avoidance is a reader friendly must for patients, clinicians, students, and others who desire a straightforward and manageable approach to overcoming anxiety and taking back control of their lives.

My bookshelves, and my clients', have become overly crowded with treatment protocols for singular disorders. Dr. Tompkins' book explains how and why a trans-diagnostic protocol can address all of the related symptoms of anxiety and avoidance.

Reliable research on mindfulness and acceptance therapies, and cognitive behavior therapy demonstrates that these treatment models are effective in treating anxiety, maladaptive thinking patterns, and related avoidance behavior. This book distills these complex therapies down to their most salient points using simple language, and practical exercises.

Dr. Tompkins includes an excellent reference list for further exploration by readers. He also does a particularly marvelous job of explaining why stepping toward discomfort and tolerating feared triggers are important parts of treatment.

The book includes easy-to-use worksheets. And, it gives hope to anxiety sufferers that they can change ineffective patterns, to build fuller, and more meaningful lives.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 I am impressed by this book. 30 septembre 2013

Anxiety and Avoidance by Michael Tompkins is an excellent book that takes many complex concepts and makes them accessible to both professionals and those who suffer from anxiety. It is a thoughtful mix of cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy. I especially like Tompkins' concept of "watching and waiting" as a strategy for coping with anxiety rather than living with future "what ifs?". This book covers the concepts simply yet articulately and then provides worksheets clients can use for follow up to practice the skills covered. As a practitioner with over twenty years experience in the field, I found many ideas I will be happy to implement in my practice.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 An excellent resource! 21 septembre 2013

"Anxiety and avoidance" is a cutting edge book and a must read for anyone struggling with anxiety or mental health professionals. I really appreciate this book because it really includes current scientific findings for treating anxiety and deconstruct the idea of having to recommend a particular book for each type of anxiety. Instead, Tompkins skillfully identify the most common processes across anxiety disorders as well as the most effective interventions in a very articulated manner as well as easy to read for anyone. He first introduces the reader to what anxiety is, types of it, commonalities among them, and specific exercises clients can do to deal with their particular "anxiety actions." The book is full of helpful, very helpful worksheets, and other relevant resources for anyone struggling with anxiety.

As a psychologist in private practice specialized in treating adults with anxiety disorders I've been recommending "Anxiety and avoidance" to all my clients.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 A great workbook for anxiety of ALL forms 8 octobre 2013

Dr Michael Tompkins is a cognitive behavioral psychologist with many years of experience working with both adults and children. (His book for adolescents, "My Anxious Mind" is a must-read for anxious teens.) In this book he boils the myriad anxiety disorders down to a unified cause and a single approach to treatment.

Dr Tompkins suggests that, while anxiety is common to all of us, it is the continued avoidance of anxiety that leads it to become uncontrollable. Avoidance is seductive, because it effectively reduces anxiety in the short term. However, in the long run avoidance allows the fear to grow, and increasingly limits, your life as you turn away from more and more things that trigger anxiety.

Through a series of gradual exercises, and helpful worksheets, Dr. Tompkins encourages the anxiety sufferer to do the hard work of "stepping toward" their anxiety rather than turning away. It is this process, and the attendant realization that we can tolerate more anxiety than we believe, that leads to real growth.

This book can help anyone with anxiety learn to face their fears and move through them to reach their real potential. I would strongly recommend this book as a "first stop" to anyone looking for effective anxiety treatment.
