Présentation de l'éditeur

New edition of this bestselling, seminal autobiography of Arsenal FC, fully revised and updated with four new chapters to bring it up to date at the start of a potentially turbulent 2011/12 season.

Described by The Observer as “fascinating” and The Guardian as “shrewd and well-informed”, respected football magazine When Saturday Comes said of Arsènal: The Making of a Modern Superclub, “at last a football book that reflects the age”.

Based on unprecedented access granted to the authors, including exclusive interviews with Arsène Wenger and key Board members, current and former players, Arsènal looks in detail at the club’s transformation into a global superpower under the stewardship of their French manager and what's gone wrong in the last couple of years. It also analyses what needs to be done to ensure Arsenal continue to compete at football's top-table.

Publisher comments

This is the third edition of this best-selling book and has been completely updated and revised to take into account the changes at Arsenal both on and off the pitch.
The five new chapters look at the Kroenke takeover and analyse what Wenger and Arsenal need to do to compete with the increased competition from mega-rich clubs and prevent Arsenal from falling out of the Elite group at the top of the Premier League.
It is a pivotal time for Arsenal and this book aims to give fans of Arsenal, and football in general, the knowledge they need to understand the inner workings of one of Europe's biggest clubs.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 The English Football equivalent of Moneyball 21 mars 2013

I love reading about the business side of sports, and 'Arsenal the Making of a Modern Superclub' delivers on this front.

The book starts by detailing the transition from George Graham to Arsene Wenger. What I loved was the snapshot of English Football before the coming of the Premier League and massive amounts of TV money as it contrasts so much with the football world we live in now.

The book mainly focuses on Arsene Wenger (as Moneyball does with Billy Beane) and how he brought new methods of training, diet and fitness (English footballers eating healthy was apparently a foreign concept until Arsene introduced it) as well as a devilishly effective instinct for buying and selling players.

Arsene's moneyballesque ability in his early days to buy cheap young players and then unsentimentally sell them off after they became stars(at the height of their value)for massive amounts of money then repeat the cycle with younger, cheaper replacements is very entertaining to read. The book details how one time Arsenal's principal striker Ian Wright got injured. Arsene with some hesitancy replaced him with Nicholas Anelka, Anelka immediately propelled Arsenal to a league title and Wright (who had wanted a transfer earlier) was promptly discarded then years later Anelka was sold for the massive amount of £23 to Real Madrid thus resulting in the subsequently built new training centre being jokingly called "Nicholas Anelka Training Ground" because his transfer fee essentially paid for it.

The crux of the book is about the construction of a new stadium for Arsenal, all the heartache and hard work that went into lobbying the city, lobbying the banks for a loan, squeezing every drop of revenue for funding and most crucially Arsene using all his acumen to continue to buy cheap and sell high to keep Arsenal competitive enough to finish in top 4 (for the Champions League money) while also producing a profit from transfer dealings.

The book loses steam as we come closer to present day and as the trophy drought in Arsenal grows longer and longer. Arsene doesn't look like the genius as he use to earlier in his tenure. We read about the same frustrations that continue to this day, Arsenal don't have enough experience, they don't have world class players, Arsene sells all his superstars, etc. It is sad as a reader to find out that Arsene might be a mere mortal after all and who (as the book reminds us) inherited many of the players in his title winning teams from George Graham.

There is not a whole lot of game action in the book. Mostly it's about the business of running a football club, backroom politics, and a deep profile of Arsene Wenger. So if you want to read about one of Thierry Henry's many goals, this is not your book.

If you are an Arsenal FC supporter, this is required reading. Period. If you're a football fan who likes reading about behind-the-scenes stuff you'll definitely want to read this.

This book charts the changes at Arsenal which place took since Arsene Wenger's arrival in 1996. Highlights include the building of the new Stadium at Ashburton Grove, the departure of David Dein, and the arrival of Stan Kroenke. All the key personalities are interviewed, from the Chairman of the Board to the playing staff.

If all you've ever watch are the matches, this books makes you understand a bit more what it takes to the run a world class football club. All in all, it makes one appreciate Arsenal football club even more.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Arsenal the club I love 28 octobre 2011

I read this book in 2 days. Arsenal is a club that I am very passionate about. Before I bought the e-book I had heard really good things about this book. I think the novel is a little bit unknown out there because I follow many Arsenal blogs and not many talk about this book. The book is about the culture of the club, finances, training methods, and the board room. Wenger is in the middle of it all. Wenger is a smart and intelligent man, but I have always known that. This book only confirms that Wenger is not perfect but he truly loves this club and wants the best for it. Wenger created the modern Arsenal.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Totally New Book - Highly Recommended 1 septembre 2014

It is important to emphasise that this is an entirely new book and NOT an updated version of Alex Fynn's previous work on Arsenal and Arsene Wenger.

This is a forensic and illuminating study of pretty much everything that occurred both on and off the field at the club since 2011.

It is totally up to date and covers Arsenal's FA Cup victory last season too.

Totally recommended.

Well written and as incisive as you would expect from something written by "Football Guru" Fynn.
