Présentation de l'éditeur

Cassie Parker has grown used to denying her sexuality. Her father, the fire-and-brimstone Reverend Parker, has made that a neccessity. Raised in a web of secrets, sadness, and under the heavy hand of her father's righteous wrath and intolerance, Cassie turns to her art to fill the hole in her heart and erase the memory of a mother who abandoned her in childhood. Then Luke Winston enters her life. Strong, mysterious, and beautiful, Luke sparks Cassie's desire, and takes her heart to places she's never known. Soon Cassie can no longer deny her attraction to women--and especially to Luke.

When Cassie's father makes an unexpected visit, the intrusion on her new life explodes as dark family secrests are revealed. Will Cassie choose a life without family...or a life without love?

J'ai aimé ce livre avec néanmoins quelques longueurs et redites dans le questionnement d'une des deux héroïnes sur sa sexualité et son enfance mais les personnages sont attachants donc on pardonne à Gerri Hill !

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Hill is on a Roll 5 janvier 2006
Par soul4real - Publié sur Amazon.com
Artist's Dream by Gerri Hill was a hidden surprise. I just recently discovered that I missed one of Hill's romance novels, and I promptly bought and read it. This is her newest release (Oct. '05), and as I would expect, it was quite good. Hill does a wonderful job of developing a strong, caring, patient and loving character in Luke Winston. Luke meets and falls for the daughter of a reverend, Cassie Parker. Cassie is in denial about her sexuality, mostly because of her strict upbringing in the house of the Reverend Parker. And she has to come to terms with her sudden attraction to the alluring Luke Winston.

Luke's character is very likable, and it is easy to see how anyone would fall madly in love with her. If Cassie is ever to get out of the closet and out from under the oppressive rule of her father, Luke is the woman to help her do it. Hill writes a wonderful touching story of friendship developing into more, and she weaves in the importance of friends in the gay community. The story develops at a comfortable pace, and includes a little angst and mystery. And as always with Hill, there are incredible, sensual love scenes.

The book ends with a few unanswered questions, leaving Hill with a wonderful option of writing her first sequel. There are great possibilities to continue this story. I know I'll be waiting to see what she writes next. This is a great read.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Another great book by Gerri Hill! 21 décembre 2005

I think everyone can relate to Artist's Dream. Cassie struggles with her overbearing father while trying to deal with ghosts from her past. It seems as if we have all known someone like Reverend Parker at some point in our lives. He's a man who believes that all homosexuals are going straight to hell and he reminds Cassie of that every chance he gets. Then there is Luke, a woman with great patience and love. Watching the relationship develop between Cassie and Luke is like watching a seedling begin to grow in hopes of it becoming a beautiful flower. This book is full of humor, love, and romance. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 I just had to read it twice... 25 août 2006
Par K. Johnson - Publié sur Amazon.com
It's not often that I read a book twice, but I had to read this one again. WOW! What a phenomenal story.

Cassie, a wood sculptor, was raised in a very conservative household by a preacher. Hill never comes out and says what religion, but it screamed Southern Baptist. Her father put the fear of God in her regarding relationships with men and told her she'd be damned to Hell if she even thought of a relationship with a woman.

Cassie's best friend, Kim, is a lesbian. Kim tried to deny her sexuality and married a man. After six months of the farce, Kim filed for divorce and finally admitted she was gay. Cassie's father overheard her confession and cursed her presence. At the time of the story, Kim is happily partnered with Lisa. They have a stable, loving home and Cassie lives nearby. Kim is always trying to get Cassie to admit she's a lesbian too, but Cassie won't give in.

Her whole world is turned upside down when she spies Luke for the first time. Luke, a successful architect, is perfection personified. She's wealthy, beautiful, athletic, and she's a vegetarian. All perfect for Cassie. Except, she won't allow herself to admit the newfound lust running through her veins because of her father's warnings.

I grew up in a Southern Baptist household where homosexuality was equivalent to eternal damnation. Fortunately, most of my family accepts me for who I am. However, Cassie is not so lucky. I related to this character so intensely it was overwhelming. Hill masterfully captures many of the feelings of fear, regret, and helplessness that are so characteristic of an ultra-conservative upbringing.

Add her insight to a cast of colorful and dimensional characters, and this book's a winner. Very highly recommended. Be prepared to grab a box of tissues, a punching bag, and a snuggle buddy, because this one will take you on a great roller coaster ride.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Gerri Hill...Always an entertaining read 31 janvier 2006

If you are familiar with Gerri Hill's writing then this book will be sure to entertain as her others do. She has an amazing way of writing about the chemistry between two people when they meet and as their relationship develops...we've all been there at one time or another in our own lives and we get to experience it again through her characters.

I recommend this if you are looking for a light, entertaining, fun lesbian romance read. No Drama, nothing too serious, not a Nobel prize winner...but that's what makes it good!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 A fascinating character study 12 avril 2008
Par B. Rabkeb - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Broché|Achat vérifié
This book is a little different that the other Gerri Hill books I've read. The setting she uses isn't as vivid. There isn't some overarching plot or mystery or intrigue or even a vacation set aside as a certain amount of time with anticipated events like her other works. And yet, I found myself liking this book the best of all of her books. It may be true that she doesn't quite develop all of her characters as deeply as she does in some other books.

The portrait she paints of Cassie is interesting and multi-layered, though. Definitely not typical of many of the characters we see in lesbian fiction. We get plenty of characters not coming out until they're adults, but the descriptions we get into her emotions and thought processes are excellent and really ring true, particularly given the harshness of her upbringing. The motivations of her father we learn about in the end aren't exactly a surprise, but add another layer to the story. I thought the characters were very realistic. I could nit-pick about their eyes locking too much, or too many "instant" realizations, but unlike some other books I've read there was enough emotional resonance to buoy me along that these minor annoyances did not take me out of the story.

I like that the characters have interesting occupations. I enjoyed learning about Luke as an architect and Cassie as an artist. In the absence of the setting being a character, it's almost like Cassie's art was another character. I like the close "family" that Cassie formed with Kim and Lisa, and that relationships between friends and family were addressed as much as they were.

Unlike some of Gerri's other works that tend to rely more heavily on plot and tend to lag at times for me, particularly towards the end when I feel the need to slap sense into some of her characters, there were no "get on with it already" moments for me. Luke and Cassie make consistent and realistic progress in their relationship, one that is very sweet, and also satisfying. My favorite book of hers yet; maybe 4-1/2 stars for its remotional resonance.
