Présentation de l'éditeur

Even the Emperor of Sirlende cannot always do as he pleases, but when custom demands he find another bride after the death of his betrothed, a princess he barely knew, Torric Deveras  defies his counselors and changes the rules rather than make a loveless marriage.

Ashara Millende is the only daughter of a nobleman, but had her inheritance stolen from her by her unscrupulous stepmother. A servant in the house that should have been hers, she dreams of escaping the drudgery of her life and finding someone who will love her for who she truly is.

When Torric invites all the marriageable women in his kingdom to a five-day holiday of feasts, tournaments, hunts, and balls so that he might choose an Empress from among them, Ashara never dreams that she can attend, much less catch his eye and win his heart. Then a woman with hidden secrets appears who will give Ashara the chance to win her heart's desire — if only she is bold enough to take the first step.

Christine Pope’s Ashes of Roses sets the timeless story of Cinderella in the world of her Latter Kingdoms series, weaving a spellbinding tale of royal intrigue, familial deceit, and the magic of love.

A beautiful love story in a Cinderella fashion. I liked the somehow solo development of their attraction and love for each other. Torricelli and Ashara were very interesting characters to discover and follow. The fact that w had both side of the story made it even better.
One never get tired of a happy ending.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Lacked Emotional Depth 24 novembre 2013

I don't think this was a terrible retelling of the Cinderella tale but it was difficult to get through because there was very little depth to the characters. The writing was fine, and the description of the mundane were unending. It was so disappointing because even though you heard the story from both Ashara and Torric's point of view I found it difficult to have any emotional connection to them. Why Torric would find Ashara so enchanting might as well have been due to magic since there was no real evidence of her charm other than her beauty. I am sure that this will appeal to a certain type of reader but I am not one of them.

In Ashes of Roses, Christine Pope's fantastical fairy tale set in the realm of her Latter Kingdoms novels (this is book #4), the author delivers not one but three immensely satisfying love stories as she retells the classic story of Cinderella. Pope's spin on the usual characters is refreshingly human--her heroine's stepmother is a social climber with a fondness for pricey knick-knacks--and the history of the kingdom her hero rules is layered and believable, with references to events and people she has mentioned in other books. (As with all of the Latter Kingdom novels, this is a stand-alone, but fans of the series will be rewarded with a series of subtle connections that just enrich the story.)
Ashara is the "Cinderella" here, forced to work as a servant in the house she should have inherited from her father, and doomed, it seems, to a lifetime of drudgery and near-starvation as her stepmother and stepsisters live a life of luxury. (One of her stepsisters isn't so bad, and readers will find themselves hoping that she redeems herself). Then Torric, the emperor of Sirlende, announces a kingdom-wide search for a bride and suddenly Ashara's presented with an opportunity she never dreamt would come her way.
Will Ashara become the Empress of Sirlende? Do you really have to ask? But the fun of the book is not just in the courtship between Ashara and Torric, but in the two other couples who also find love during the five-day fest Torric has arranged to meet all the eligible women in the kingdom. And what a fest it is! And what beautiful gowns Ashara wears--garments so beautiful that readers will wish there was an Ashara paper doll somewhere. (The copper gown Ashara wears to the grand ball at the end is flamboyantly gorgeous, and Pope's description of it is detailed and vivid.)
There's a long tradition of retelling fairy tales, unraveling the basic plot and then knitting something new. Pope's transformation of Cinderella is solidly in that tradition and the result is a magical, memorable read.

I like the way this author takes old stories like Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella and gives them a new twist. I enjoyed all the books I have read by her. I would happily buy more when she writes them.

At first, I was disappointed,as I left fairy tales behind some 30 years ago. But I kept reading, hoping there would be at least some good plot twists. As I read further into the story, it became a very sweet romance and very well written. If you're looking for paranormal romance, look elsewhere. In "Ashes of Roses," there's not much magic, and the characters were so very close to "Cinderella," only a red headed girl. But for lovers of the story of, it expands on the much loved fairy tale. I found myself rooting for the heroine & getting swept back up in a much expanded tale from my childhood. This is a good book for teen readers as there is only detailed kissing, no fore play written about & the couple of sexual encounters, after marriage, VERY glossed over & underscored. It is very well written historical fiction built around and intertwined with a much loved fairy tale.

This was a beautifully written story of a handsome, kind, and intelligent Emperor and his sweet, brave, and strong lady love. The story itself was written through they eyes of Ashara and Torric and although most of it was glossed over, the writing itself was elegant and endearing. In fact, I think I liked this version of the classic Cinderella tale much more.
The romance was there - it wasn't steamy or raunchy - and there were sweet and funny parts intermixed with the retelling of a classic fairy tale. There was a happy ending although bittersweet in some areas but in the end everyone got what they deserved and wanted.
