This book makes it easy! 21 juillet 2013
Par Dan - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Format Kindle
I looked to this book to fill the gaps in some of my Asterisk knowledge following several years of providing PBX service to a couple of small companies via a packaged asterisk distro (trixbox). I expected to gain an understanding of some what was being done behind the scenes for me, but what I found was that I learned much more.

Instead of just a better understanding of the packaged distro, I realized that I was missing out on the power and flexibility of Asterisk itself. Previously, I expected that managing the underlying technology would be more complicated than I could (or would want to) handle as a side project. That turned out to not be the case.

This book quickly and clearly took me from an asterisk user to an asterisk administrator before I was halfway through it. It gave me the knowledge and confidence to dump the limited and outdated trixbox environment and rebuild my systems from the ground up. What I ended up with was a cleaner approach, specifically tailored to what I needed, with less hoops to jump through for simple tasks, and more powerful functions for my users.

If you're thinking about running an asterisk system, already do, or think it might be more complicated than you can manage, definitely give this book a chance to change your mind!

Great book; very informattive. 8 juillet 2013

I bought and read the previous version (Asterisk 1.8), and this one is updated to version 11. Good updates; a lot of content is from the previous book (as you might imagine), but it's well written, easy to understand, and encourages "hands-on" exercises. Since Asterisk is an open-source package, it's freely and easily available. It makes for a great "My First PBX" and introduction to telecom. Of course there's lots of other "deep learning" (like SIP) that might suck you in for a while ;-) A SIP hardphone was very useful to me during setup, and for following the examples. Overall, it is THE introduction to Asterisk. Lots of help is available via the web.

Worthless as a reference guide 21 novembre 2013

While this book may be "gentle toward those new to Asterisk", but it is almost WORTHLLESS as a reference guide to the intricate details of how many Asterisk commands actually work. I have used Asterisk for 10 years. The earlier edition (2005) is much better, though out of date. This book sits on the shelf unused.
Good but could be so much better. 13 novembre 2014

I bought this book as a newbie to Asterisk and VoIP in general. I consider myself a pretty good system admin and software developer. I purchased a Digium D40 phone, an ATA (SPA-3000) and this book. My goal was and still is to improve then telecommunications for my small home/business.

I have a love/hate relationship with this book - it's good, but it could be so much better. Many times I read example code and think, "oh, that looks like a nice function or feature", I want to know more about it, so I head to the Index to find absolutely nothing about it. The index just sucks. Yes it has one, but you'll be scouring the table of contents and every single page in a chapter looking to implement the feature you want... and you can't skip ahead to a cheat sheet or reference because this isn't much of a reference book.

For example; I wanted to route incoming calls by caller-id. Simple stuff like, phone calls from my Mother are allowed 24/7 but other callers will be routed to an automated voice attendant. The book's Index has a single reference to caller id, which I then follow to find a one page description explain what caller id is, but not how it relates to Asterisk - that is just stupid! However, when I browse through the book, I sometimes find really interesting code examples dealing with caller-id, but nothing cohesive, just random throw-away comments and allusions to it. It's like the author is teasing me that Asterisk has this really cool feature, but you'll have to use Google to learn about it. Caller-ID is just one example. I'm pleased I bought this book and have gained a lot from it, but it could be so much more. This book didn't help me connect my ATA to Asterisk. I recommend buying it.

If you want to really understand Asterisk , this is a must. Does not matter if you are novice or already have experience.
