Présentation de l'éditeur

Seventeen-year-old Tessa McCaide has come a long way since her abrupt entrance into the world of werewolves, but she still has just as far to go before she’s comfortable with turning full wolf. In the meantime, she’s avoiding the topic of shifting to four legs any way she can. Thankfully her mate, Dastien Laurent, is quite the distraction.

When she finds her best friend, Meredith, getting sick in the bathroom, Tessa knows something’s majorly wrong. Meredith was cursed years ago, and the dark magic kept her wolf dormant—only now the wolf is awake, and that same spell is killing her.

Tessa has no intention of sitting around while Meredith wastes away. Even if it means playing with magic she doesn’t understand, she’ll do anything to save Meredith’s life. Including bargaining with the local coven of witches and its crazed leader, whose only goal is getting Tessa to join the witchy ranks.

Can Tessa save her friend without losing herself?

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Very "bare bones" 13 mai 2014

This is a cute story about what lengths Tessa is willing to go to in order to save Meredith, her BFF, but calling it book 2 in the ALPHA GIRL series is a bit of stretch in my opinion. This installment doesn’t even have half of the pages that BECOMING ALPHA did (145 vs. 406) which was a bit misleading, and many of the elements that I enjoyed the first time around were practically non-existent in AVOIDING ALPHA. The blurb suggests that McCaide’s bruja half was going to be at the forefront of this story, and I was looking forward to learning more about Aileen Erin’s witchy mythology, but unfortunately the lore fell flat. And, that’s not the only area in which this novella failed to deliver; the werewolves are barely a blip on the radar, and there’s not much going on in the romance department either.

After such a strong debut, I had high hopes for this installment that were slowly snuffed out with every new chapter I read. The world-building was one of the main strengths of book 1, so I was surprised by how sparse it was in this story. I’ve been dying to learn more about Erin’s werewolves, and the magical elements that make up her universe, but sadly this tale had very little in the way of details. It was strictly business: save Meredith. Period. The character growth was practically nil, and this novel did very little if anything to advance this series’ overall plot arc. The whole thing just kinda left me scratching my head wondering what the point of it all was.

Tessa and Dastien’s relationship got off to a rocky start, and I expected there to be some growing pains in AVOIDING ALPHA, but again there was nothing of the sort. They are supposed to “mate” during the upcoming Full Moon Ceremony, and yet they both seem totally ok with this which is weird because 1) McCaide’s only seventeen and 2) they’ve known each other for a mere two months. Their whole romance just rubbed me the wrong way; it was insta-love to the nth degree, and even though I’ve come to expect as much from werewolf books, I just wasn’t feeling their bond. It was missing something.

The secondary characters fell short as well. Axle barely makes an appearance, we learn nothing new about Tessa’s witch cousins, and Meredith is unconscious for the bulk of this tale. Heck, McCaide doesn’t even really grow in this installment either. She’s still scared of her wolf and refuses to change. I couldn’t help but wonder where the meat of this story was because I found it to be very “bare bones”. This novella could have easily been a full length book, and would have been a decent read too had some (or all) of the elements I mentioned been incorporated, but instead it felt like bonus material. It’s as though the author used only her outline to write this installment, and forgot to include all of the little details that turn an idea into a fully fleshed-out story.

I call ‘em like I see ‘em, and AVOIDING ALPHA is a novella, and a disappointing one at that. I can’t help but be concerned that Aileen Erin’s ALPHA GIRL tank is already running on empty.

I absolutely love this series, and the author writes very well. So please don't take this review the wrong way. I would still definitely recommend buying books from this author and reading this series. :)

As for this book, however, it was soooo drawn out an lacking the excitement that the prior book had. The entire book is, in a nut shell, Tess trying to find a way to cure Meredith's sickness. The.Entire.Book. She and Dastien get very limited romance in this book, as it is constantly overshadowed by Meredith's situation. Don't get me wrong, there were exciting and attention grabbing scenes, but I really, really wanted some big romance with Tess & Dastien! How much longer is she going to be 17/too young to fully "mate" with Dastien?

And while we're on the subject of Tess...She's STILL not "one" with her wolf, and fights when she needs to shift. That wasn't ever really resolved in this book, unfortunately. So many things that Tess needed to resolve and address, but they all took a backseat to Meredith.

I was glad to see some resolution to other things, such as Tess balancing out her "bruja" side, and I was happy that things for Meredith didn't take a dire turn forever. But I still can't say that I loved this book. Too drawn out, and not enough Tess+Dastien!!

Lastly, what's up with the book being significantly shorter than the previous book? Did I miss something? The first book is pretty long, then this one is less than half of that?! I wanted more!!

Tessa has settled into her life as a werewolf as well as can be expected. She has her mate Dastien, and her best friend Meredith, but she still can't change. When Meredith's curse becomes deadly and it starts killing her, Tessa will do anything to save her friend, even negotiate with the crazy leader of the Bruja coven.
This book picks up a short time after the first ends. I don't believe that they can be read as standalone, so I recommend starting at the beginning to get the full story. I really enjoy these, my only complaint being that they are too short for me. I really like the world that has been built as well as the character development, and each book I read sucks me in I am sad for them to be over. I love the fact that there are werewolves as well as witches, and that the main character is a blend of both. That way the reader gets insight into both worlds. I also love the idea of true mates in werewolf books, and this one has it!
Tessa is a fairly strong character, she can hold her own with all the crazy and throw out her snark. I love her side commentary, be it inside her head or the things that just slip out randomly. The banter between Tessa and Dastien is equal parts hysterical and swoon worthy. I was a little frustrated with her resistance to going furry, though. I know that is seemed strange to her, but it seemed to hurt Dastien and her place in the pack with her refusal. I was incredibly concerned that she would sacrifice herself to the witches, and I was stressed as to what that would do to Dastien. Tessa has the potential to be a great leader once she excepts all of herself. Oh and I also think she needs to show Shannon who the boss really is.
I love Dastien and his romantic french phrases that he slips out. He is the perfect example of the Alpha male, strong and powerful, yet sweet, caring and protective. He is so patient with Tessa, and yes I understand he is the reason that she is in this mess, but come on, they are true mates! My favorite parts of the book were the scenes they were in together. I look forward to more books in the series to see how the mating ceremony goes and their life together. I know it won't be easy with Tessa's luck and the tribunal, but at least they will be together.
I enjoy this series and look forward to the next installment.
I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 SO DANG GOOD!!! 10 décembre 2014

Once again I am pleased with this series. Tessa and the gang are back to stir up the pots and have us sitting on the edge of our seat waiting for a moment we can blink and not miss anything. I am so very happy that I came across this author and this series!

Tessa has accepted her mate and is in a comfortably happier, steadier place now. It's been almost 2 months since she was bitten and things have settled into a routine for them all. Meredith, Tessa's best friend and suit mate tries to get her to tell all of her dirty little secrets but she really doesn't have any, yet. They are thicker than thieves and its still all new to Tessa to have a friend that actually accepts her as she is. Hopefully after the Full Moon Ceremony this coming weekend Tessa and Dastien will be even stronger together. Meredith finally gets her to speak of her fears, only to have Dastien over hear them. But then that gives them something to work on. He knows she is scared but is there to help her in any way.

The next morning when Meredith gets sick... she panics. Were's don't get sick, ever. Thankfully they are able to tranq her to keep her settled but with her wolf waking up it is fighting against the curse the witches coven cursed her with years ago. The two sides, the wolf and the curse are killing her. She starts to fade fast. Tessa has to find a way to save her. Selfish as it maybe she can't lose her best friend. Meredith never talked much about her curse. No one knows much about it, just that it happened. As Tessa thinks over what has happened she decides to go to the coven and ask them to pull the curse back, to save her friend. Both her mother and Dastien tell her no, she can't go its too dangerous. But does that stop her? Urm, hell no.

Tessa gets Chris to go with her, so she isn't alone in case she gets into trouble. 'Casue this is Tessa after all. She always finds trouble. When they arrive at the little 'town' the coven lives in they seek out her cousin's first. Seems not everyone is happy with the way that Luciana, the coven's leader, is running things. She is unhinged in a way. Even her son thinks that. The cousins can't help her but they tell her she can ask Luciana to take back the curse but come on that won't work. The meet and greet between Luciana and Tessa doesn't go quite as planned. She of course says no to retracting the curse. She is anti-wolf and has been for years. Something passed between them as they stand off against each other, face to face and it takes Chris pulling her away and shoving her into her car that gets them away. Her wolf wanted to rip Luciana a new one. I can't say I blame her.

Then panic takes over Tessa, she starts to freak out but it isn't her panic she feels it's Dastien's. Seems going on the coven land cut off their bond. He panicked thinking she was dead. Well that just sucked. When they got back to school her friends were waiting on them, as was Dr. Gonzales. Meredith;s condition was still bad. Getting worse by the minute. They all divided up the books her cousin's had given her to try and find a way to save her. A spell, anything. Tessa even tried to use her 'sight' to see if she could get into Meredith;s head and see what started the curse. Anything would help them to get her back.

The longer they took to form a plan, the worse Meredith;s condition was getting. As Tessa dove into Mer's mind she was able to connect with Donovan. Seems they (Meredith and Donovan) were true mates like she and Dastien were. So she was able to talk to him as she pulled power through her mate and the pack. Donovan said 'she' could break the curse. She had to mix witchcraft.. and the message was lost when Dastien and her friends broke her hold on the pack power. Seems she was pulling power form Mer and she didn't have the power to lose. When her looking into her head didn't work, they moved to plan B. Finding the wright spell that mixed witchcraft with something.

After a call to her brother, a trip to see their (her and Axel's) great aunt she had the ingredients she needed to do the spell that would hopefully help save Meredith. Also, her aunt was able to pull a spell off of her that Luciana had cast upon her during her visit to see the coven. That was the reason she was so irritable and on edge. Luciana did it to get her to come back to her so she could 'control' her wolf.Right. Not happening. So when she and Dastien get back to the school later that evening they only have a few hours to finish off the spell that Adrian and Chris had been left to get started while they got the other pieces. When all was ready they went to the schools roof, minutes before midnight and Tessa performed the spell. Meredith was awakened but only for mere seconds. The spell didn't work. But she couldn't figure out why. She had failed but had no idea why.

The next day her only choice was to go back to the coven and make a deal with Luciana. She'd do anything she could to get Meredith out of this pain and dying. She needed to keep her alive. The only way to go to the coven was with Dastien. As a mated couple he would be their to protect her and keep her under control. He would also be safe. They'd never do anything to her or him if they wanted her to be one of their coven. But as shitastic as her luck is Tess ran into a roadblock at the coven. Luciana was not budging on what she wanted; Tessa to join the coven and to let her use a spell to block out her wolf. But during their little argument Luciana gives Tessa enough of an idea on how to save Meredith. They leave in a hurry and Tessa has Dastien call the school and to get all the wolves they can into the courtyard. She would need to use her witchcraft and her Alpha power to free Meredith's wolf.

Was it a long shot? Hell yes but she had to try. Meredith had mere hours left to live, not time to waste. It took Tessa no time to get into Meredith's head this time. She knew what she was looking for, she just had to find it. Falling into the deep dark cavern of Mer's mind. Tessa found Mer's wolf chained down. Using her gift, her power and her ability to pull the chains, making them break, painfully slowly but it was working. As the wolves in the courtyard started to shift and howl as she gave out the Alpha orders to shift. Finally she was kicked out of Meredith's head. When she opened her eyes she saw her beautiful white wolf. Meredith had done it. She had shifted. She was saved, the spell was broken.

But before she could rejoice a power ran through Tessa. She doubled over in pain, fighting her own change. The power that overtook her was Donovan. He finally made it to the school. He ordered her to change, but as Tess is good at she fought it more and more until he slammed enough power into her that she shifted. Spinning around on four legs. She did it, she was herself again. She felt calm and in control for the first time in weeks, years even. Her wolf settled her.

Her and Dastien went off running... hours later shifting back to two legs and heading back to the school. Her wolf was settled into her now, she was balanced, which made her and Dastien more balanced. His worry for her lessened. Now, all they had to do was get ready for whatever was thrown at them next.

So, I am off to book 3.. God if it's as good as this one, and I totally know it will be I may die waiting for May of 2015 for book #4. Gah. (huffs and laughs)

Have you ever read a story where you know you could easily edit out a hundred or more pages and make a better story. This book is about Tessa's adjustment to being a werewolf and the curse her friend Meredith had placed on her by the coven Tessa was supposed to take over. After the vampire attacks caused by the father of her mate's ex-girlfriend, things are just starting to settle down if you forget the tribunal that cannot be stopped. Donnelly, one of the seven oldest, most powerful weres, has fallen for Meredith and Tessa thinks they are true mates too. One morning Meredith wakes up sick and weres are never sick. Donnelly has awoken her wolf and it is fighting the curse. The doctor says she only has a day or two and that is not enough time for Donnelly or the head of the Pack to get back. She grabs a friend who has Brujas in his family as well and they try to find the coven. It is a creepy place and the cousins can only give her the books her grandmother wanted handed down to her including her family's Book of Shadows.

She gets the gang together and tries to save Meredith. She meets her great aunt and learns that magic is about intent. She needs to stay to the light and make her intent strong through her faith. Meredith risks going back with Dastien to the coven to try to work something out with the dark magic leader, but figures out how what to do without trading herself. Meredith has to overcome her fears holding her back from accepting her new life in order to be able to help Meredith. It is not a long book, but the story is complete without being rushed. I like the characters in this series and I watch them grow and that is how I measure success in relationships and series. This is a series I plan to follow.
