Présentation de l'éditeur

Seventeen-year-old Tessa McCaide has come a long way since her abrupt entrance into the world of werewolves, but she still has just as far to go before she’s comfortable with turning full wolf. In the meantime, she’s avoiding the topic of shifting to four legs any way she can. Thankfully her mate, Dastien Laurent, is quite the distraction.

When she finds her best friend, Meredith, getting sick in the bathroom, Tessa knows something’s majorly wrong. Meredith was cursed years ago, and the dark magic kept her wolf dormant—only now the wolf is awake, and that same spell is killing her.

Tessa has no intention of sitting around while Meredith wastes away. Even if it means playing with magic she doesn’t understand, she’ll do anything to save Meredith’s life. Including bargaining with the local coven of witches and its crazed leader, whose only goal is getting Tessa to join the witchy ranks.

Can Tessa save her friend without losing herself?

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Very "bare bones" 13 mai 2014

This is a cute story about what lengths Tessa is willing to go to in order to save Meredith, her BFF, but calling it book 2 in the ALPHA GIRL series is a bit of stretch in my opinion. This installment doesn’t even have half of the pages that BECOMING ALPHA did (145 vs. 406) which was a bit misleading, and many of the elements that I enjoyed the first time around were practically non-existent in AVOIDING ALPHA. The blurb suggests that McCaide’s bruja half was going to be at the forefront of this story, and I was looking forward to learning more about Aileen Erin’s witchy mythology, but unfortunately the lore fell flat. And, that’s not the only area in which this novella failed to deliver; the werewolves are barely a blip on the radar, and there’s not much going on in the romance department either.

After such a strong debut, I had high hopes for this installment that were slowly snuffed out with every new chapter I read. The world-building was one of the main strengths of book 1, so I was surprised by how sparse it was in this story. I’ve been dying to learn more about Erin’s werewolves, and the magical elements that make up her universe, but sadly this tale had very little in the way of details. It was strictly business: save Meredith. Period. The character growth was practically nil, and this novel did very little if anything to advance this series’ overall plot arc. The whole thing just kinda left me scratching my head wondering what the point of it all was.

Tessa and Dastien’s relationship got off to a rocky start, and I expected there to be some growing pains in AVOIDING ALPHA, but again there was nothing of the sort. They are supposed to “mate” during the upcoming Full Moon Ceremony, and yet they both seem totally ok with this which is weird because 1) McCaide’s only seventeen and 2) they’ve known each other for a mere two months. Their whole romance just rubbed me the wrong way; it was insta-love to the nth degree, and even though I’ve come to expect as much from werewolf books, I just wasn’t feeling their bond. It was missing something.

The secondary characters fell short as well. Axle barely makes an appearance, we learn nothing new about Tessa’s witch cousins, and Meredith is unconscious for the bulk of this tale. Heck, McCaide doesn’t even really grow in this installment either. She’s still scared of her wolf and refuses to change. I couldn’t help but wonder where the meat of this story was because I found it to be very “bare bones”. This novella could have easily been a full length book, and would have been a decent read too had some (or all) of the elements I mentioned been incorporated, but instead it felt like bonus material. It’s as though the author used only her outline to write this installment, and forgot to include all of the little details that turn an idea into a fully fleshed-out story.

I call ‘em like I see ‘em, and AVOIDING ALPHA is a novella, and a disappointing one at that. I can’t help but be concerned that Aileen Erin’s ALPHA GIRL tank is already running on empty.

3.0 étoiles sur 5 Too drawn out, and nothing really happened! 16 mai 2014

I absolutely love this series, and the author writes very well. So please don't take this review the wrong way. I would still definitely recommend buying books from this author and reading this series. :)

As for this book, however, it was soooo drawn out an lacking the excitement that the prior book had. The entire book is, in a nut shell, Tess trying to find a way to cure Meredith's sickness. The.Entire.Book. She and Dastien get very limited romance in this book, as it is constantly overshadowed by Meredith's situation. Don't get me wrong, there were exciting and attention grabbing scenes, but I really, really wanted some big romance with Tess & Dastien! How much longer is she going to be 17/too young to fully "mate" with Dastien?

And while we're on the subject of Tess...She's STILL not "one" with her wolf, and fights when she needs to shift. That wasn't ever really resolved in this book, unfortunately. So many things that Tess needed to resolve and address, but they all took a backseat to Meredith.

I was glad to see some resolution to other things, such as Tess balancing out her "bruja" side, and I was happy that things for Meredith didn't take a dire turn forever. But I still can't say that I loved this book. Too drawn out, and not enough Tess+Dastien!!

Lastly, what's up with the book being significantly shorter than the previous book? Did I miss something? The first book is pretty long, then this one is less than half of that?! I wanted more!!

I liked it but I think that there was not much of a storyline in it. There were a few funny moments between Tessa and Dastien and I still love their relationship. Dastien is very protective of Tessa and I sometimes wished that Tessa had been more active in telling him what she was going to do. Dastien truly cares for Tessa and at times it seemed as though Tessa did not think about what her actions would do to Dastien (they are true bound mates after all). Whatever Dastien felt throughout the book usually was a result of what Tessa was going through or about to do. I also was not that happy with Tessa, she was constantly not wanting to shift into a wolf because she did not want to lose the last of her humanity. Well if your going to be with Dastien who is a wolf himself then you kind of have to accept the fact that your a wolf. Overall it was a good novella.

Tessa has settled into her life as a werewolf as well as can be expected. She has her mate Dastien, and her best friend Meredith, but she still can't change. When Meredith's curse becomes deadly and it starts killing her, Tessa will do anything to save her friend, even negotiate with the crazy leader of the Bruja coven.
This book picks up a short time after the first ends. I don't believe that they can be read as standalone, so I recommend starting at the beginning to get the full story. I really enjoy these, my only complaint being that they are too short for me. I really like the world that has been built as well as the character development, and each book I read sucks me in I am sad for them to be over. I love the fact that there are werewolves as well as witches, and that the main character is a blend of both. That way the reader gets insight into both worlds. I also love the idea of true mates in werewolf books, and this one has it!
Tessa is a fairly strong character, she can hold her own with all the crazy and throw out her snark. I love her side commentary, be it inside her head or the things that just slip out randomly. The banter between Tessa and Dastien is equal parts hysterical and swoon worthy. I was a little frustrated with her resistance to going furry, though. I know that is seemed strange to her, but it seemed to hurt Dastien and her place in the pack with her refusal. I was incredibly concerned that she would sacrifice herself to the witches, and I was stressed as to what that would do to Dastien. Tessa has the potential to be a great leader once she excepts all of herself. Oh and I also think she needs to show Shannon who the boss really is.
I love Dastien and his romantic french phrases that he slips out. He is the perfect example of the Alpha male, strong and powerful, yet sweet, caring and protective. He is so patient with Tessa, and yes I understand he is the reason that she is in this mess, but come on, they are true mates! My favorite parts of the book were the scenes they were in together. I look forward to more books in the series to see how the mating ceremony goes and their life together. I know it won't be easy with Tessa's luck and the tribunal, but at least they will be together.
I enjoy this series and look forward to the next installment.
I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Fantastic sequel... 21 juillet 2014

This is the second book in the Alpha Girl series, and it a pretty little sequel to Becoming Alpha. I liked Tessa, Dastien and Meridith, so I was definitely looking forward to seeing more of them. This time around, we get to see some real growth from Tessa, and I liked how Tessa learned more about where she came from, her heritage and what it all meant for her. Tess has this side to her that is selfless, and will do anything for those she loves. She does some pretty cray things too when Meridith goes missing and she sets out to find her. The pacing was steady, not as much action this time, but with all the witchy/werewolf stuff happening, I flew through this before I knew it. Now, since this is a novella the romance too kinda a back seat, and was more about Tessa and trying to save Meredith. Dastien is there with Tessa through everything, and he was just as charming as always. Avoiding Alpha was a interestingly fun and quick read, and a great addition to the series.
