Présentation de l'éditeur

How do you live a life of spiritual awakening as well as outer abundance, inner freedom as well as deep intimacy? How do you serve the world selflessly, yet passionately celebrate your life?

The sages of Tantra have known for centuries that when you follow the path of Shakti—the sacred feminine principle personified by the goddesses of yoga—these gifts can manifest spontaneously. Yet most of us, women as well as men, have yet to experience the full potential of our inner feminine energies. When you know these powers for what they are, they heighten your capacity to open spiritually, love more deeply and fearlessly, create with greater mastery, and move through the world with skill and delight. In Awakening Shakti, you will learn how to recognize and invite:

  • Kali, bringer of strength, fierce love, and untamed freedom
  • Lakshmi, who confers prosperity and beauty
  • Saraswati, for clarity of communication and intuition
  • Radha, who carries the divine energy of spiritual longing
  • Bhuvaneshvari, who creates the space for sacred transformation
  • Parvati, to awaken creativity and the capacity to love

With a wealth of meditations, visualizations, mantras, teachings, and beautifully told stories, Awakening Shakti provides a practical guide for activating the currents of the divine feminine in every aspect of your life.

“Sally Kempton's new book is a treasure that brings myth, meditation, and everyday revelation together in a way that will allow every woman to embody the divine feminine in her life. Sally enlivens the full spectrum of the goddess—from independent protector, to lover, to dynamic and powerful creatrix. I highly recommend this soon-to-be classic!”
—Shiva Rea, Yogini

“Sally Kempton has given us a mythic manual for a new kind of feminism—a feminism of the soul. And this is a good thing, because humanity needs feminine power now as both a healing tonic and a source of reinvention.”
—Elizabeth Lesser, Co-founder of Omega Institute, author of Broken Open: How Difficult Times Can Help Us Grow

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Wonderful Contribution to Feminine Spirituality 28 janvier 2013
Par L. Erickson - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Broché
I so love this book, and I think anyone interested in women's spirituality or personal development, regardless of religious beliefs, will too. It centers around the major female deities of Hinduism - Durga, Lakshmi, Kali, Parvati, Saraswati, Sita, Dhumavati, Radha, Chinnamasta, Lalita, and Bhuvanehswari (these last few perhaps not so well-known) - and ways of working with them as archetypes or representations of energies within ourselves that can be brought forth. After an introduction to Hindu mythology in general, and her way of working with these goddesses, the author Sally Kempton devotes a chapter to each goddess, each of which follows the same basic format: The mythology of that goddess, and the energies and lessons these stories hold for us, practices for connecting with this energy ourselves, the 'shadow' aspect of each goddess, and then an overview of how that goddess' energy manifests in our world. While this material could get overly abstract or historical, Ms. Kempton keeps it relevant by including personal stories from her own life, and the lives of students and friends.

So for example, Durga represents the female warrior, and thus represents the energy we need to move through obstacles in our lives. The journal and practices outlined in this chapter are designed to help a reader awaken her own innate warrior instincts, and uncover ways she might have repressed this side of herself due to social conditioning or personal history. One of the 'shadow' aspects of Durga is becoming overly combative or angry, and so there are also suggested journalling activities and meditations for facing and working with these tendencies, so that this 'Durga' energy can be better directed and experienced. Lakshmi, goddess of abundance and good fortune is next explored, with the practices in this chapter devoted to helping the reader discover her innate beauty and radiance, and exercises for helping to release blocks to abundance, or to both giving and receiving good fortune. The chapter on Kali helps the reader connect with her deep desire for truth and freedom, and willingness to overturn convention - whether in one's personal life or on a social level - to achieve that. The Parvati chapter focuses on helping us discover our nurturing and devotional side, etc.

I think the strength of this book lies in the fact that you can relate to it on many different levels. You can relate to these goddesses as actual deities, and use the more devotional meditations outlined here as forms of worship added to your spiritual practice. Or you can relate to these goddesses as feminine archetypes, and use the journalling exercises and meditations as methods for recognizing those that are already strong in you, and strengthening those that are not. On still another level, it is a serious spiritual guide, offering many truths of the spiritual journey and particularly of Tantra, one of least understood (or most misunderstood) Eastern pathways. The author has walked the walk, both in her own spiritual journey, and in her teaching, and this shows in the many stories that she shares from her life. In that way, this book offers more than information - it offers a powerful transmission for those open to it.

So whether you are interested in yoga or Hinduism or not, I think you will find much of value in this book. And no, it is not just for women, anyone could work with the goddesses in this way, although most of the stories shared are geared for women readers. A wonderful and unique contribution, making knowledge and practices that might have only been available to a few in the past available to all!

5.0 étoiles sur 5 I really love it 25 février 2013

I'm still working with the goddess energies. I've made it to Lakshmi Goddess. I love the stories, the meditations, and the contemplations that Sally offers and invites each of us to use.

It is a lucid, well written work. I am probably a quarter of the way through it so far and keep sipping at it like a fine wine. One reason I don't want to rush through from cover to cover is because this is a book to really follow along with closely. I have made powerful insights and discoveries along the way. An important point I wish to make about this book is that it is not gender-biased. My being a man reading this has given me greater appreciation for both sexes, but more importantly, a deeper and expanded felt sense of the intimate divine, as I like to think of it.

I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to have a light beacon in dark times. You will derive much from this book. It will become your friend while you wade through mysterious and challenging life situations.

Within the ever widening circle of today's spiritual discourse, no one I know of speaks with lucidity, intelligence and eloquence like Sally Kempton. If you didn't love to meditate before reading her first book, "Meditation For The Love Of It," you will upon completion. Her latest work, "Awakening Shakti," does just that. The book pulses with the same dynamic energy it describes so well. We are introduced to the family of Tantric Goddesses comprising the body of the eternal Feminine Principle. Reaching into the depths of this sacred mythology, Sally engages the varied forces of spiritual and psychological life revealing the elaborate jeweled aspects of the Goddesses and illuminating each in her most fierce and sublime features. As she does so, Sally demystifies the likes of Kali and Saraswati, making them recognizable to each of us in our everyday life.

From the opening pages, Sally's love, respect for and knowledge of these ancient teachings is obvious. But she does not leave the reader dangling from a thread of esoteric knowledge. Again and again, she brings us back to practice. Practices that help us understand these energies, relate to them effectively and deliver us into a direct experience of the Divine Feminine.

"Awakening Shakti" is a must read for women, and men alike, who wish to partake of a great adventurous story into the mythology and vastly inclusive spirituality of the Tantras. Like her first book, this is not simply a good read, but rather a piece of work to study and engage with. Enjoy.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Wonderful exploration into the Goddesses of Yoga 9 mars 2013
Par Meredith Leblanc - Publié sur Amazon.com

To be honest, I haven't had much interest in studying the Hindu Goddesses, I've always been more of a Shiva and Hanuman kind of gal. I've seen plenty of their iconography, blurbs here and there, and of course, Heidi Klum's controversial Kali Halloween costume several years ago, but never enough information to draw me in. When Sally Kempton's book Awakening Shakti: the Transformative Power of the Goddesses of Yoga was introduced to me, I decided it was high time I broaden my knowledge.

Sally Kempton has done a wonderful job organizing these lovely Goddesses in her book, both exploring the light and the shadow side of them, thus inviting us to explore our own light and shadow sides. There are eleven goddesses she fleshes out for us, complete with gorgeous illustrations by Ekabhumi Charles Ellik, meditation exercises, lists of alternate names, capabilities, where and why to invoke them, their bija and invocation mantras, and their personal Gayatri mantra. In addition to the Goddess' story, Sally shares her personal experiences with them and experiences through people with whom she's been involved. On top of the beautiful biographies, Sally has included a pronounciation guide, a "which goddess are you" guide, and a reader's group guide that would be great for yoga and meditation teachers to use in class.

Personally, I found myself identifying with Lakshmi (Goddess of Abundance and Good Fortune), Sita (Goddess of Devotion and Mystical Submission), and Dhumavati (Crone Goddess of Disappointment and Letting Go). In the depth of these identities is more than just what their title implies. In Lakshmi, invoking wealth and sharing it, but not becoming materialistic and attached and when to not over extend. In Sita, loving completely and being a supportive partner, but also knowing when to walk away. In Dhumavati, finding beauty in the rubble and death and finding joy no matter what.

Overall, I think this is a fantastic addition to my library of books. It brings a nice balance to the mystical aspect of my practice and my point of reference. Whether or not you are well versed in Goddesses of Yoga, I would recommend Awakening Shakti to expand your point of view.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 I cannot recommend this book highly enough. 29 juillet 2013

Since beginning to read this book, I have called, texted, e-mailed, Facebook shared and told in person, every woman I know that this book is something they would benefit from reading. The way feminine power is viewed as not only positive but necessary in the Hindu cosmology is so good for women of the Western world to recognize, it can be life-altering. Those parts of ourselves that we in the West are taught to repress are instead exalted in Hindu cosmology because they are viewed as aspects of the one Ultimate source of all that is, the goddess Shakti, who broke herself into tiny pieces from the one whole, giving us the illusion of separateness when in fact we are unified on a personal level (all aspects of ourselves) and on a cosmic level (we are the stuff that stars are made of).

So instead of repressing our sexuality so that we are not branded as sluts or told that we "deserve what happens to you" when you express said sexuality in dress or in other ways, that aspect has its own goddesses who are celebrated and honored for those very qualities. There are avenues of expression such as devotion to one's spouse or lover, or other outpourings of expressions of love that are available and again, worshipped and wished for, as opposed to here where those longings remain secret on behalf of both men and women.

Here in the America most women are taught to repress their anger lest they be deemed "bitches". But Durga is worshiped in India exactly because when she gets angry, legions of people, entire countries, are saved from horrible fates by the compassion her righteous anger represents and delivers.

The Hindu goddesses serve as archetypes representing aspects of ourselves, all of which come together to make us whole. We need all sides of ourselves to fully function in order to fulfill our life's purpose. The repression of anger and sexuality takes out of play two very powerful energetic forces for change in our lives and in the world. This book discusses ways of looking at ourselves that bring understanding and eliminate shame embedded in our psyches by the conditioning of our cultures.

This book is an opportunity to heal some of the wounds our conditioning has inflicted. I invite all women and their male consorts to get a copy and read so that you may begin to recognize which archetypal energies you manifest naturally, which ones have met with societal resistance and led you to repress them, and which ones could serve you if you are lacking them, so that you may be a more fully realized person having a more complete life experience.

Blessings on your journeys :-)
