Présentation de l'éditeur

It is the day after Aimee Patterson’s high school graduation. College beckons, as does her dream of becoming an engineer. On an early evening walk, her cocker spaniel charges into the woods on the other side of the pond. Aimee trails after him, and in the stillness of that forest the unthinkable happens. She becomes paralyzed and watches in horror as her hands vanish before her eyes.

Waking to the sound of voices, Aimee realizes that she has been kidnapped. Little does she know how far away from home she is, though. In an attempt to flee her captors, she launches from their confines only to freeze at the view outside the window. The sky is black and filled with stars, and in the distance is a familiar blue globe. The planet Earth.

A group of humans forced to flee their planet after an epidemic destroyed their civilization now travel the galaxies in search of an antidote. Retrieving samples of plant life from every solar system, on this occasion Aimee was accidentally seized instead.

Aimee must learn to avoid the advances of an awkward young scientist who seems intent on dissecting her, as her own fascination turns to the exotic young warrior, Zak. Having fallen in love with Zak, she is now torn with the decision to return to Earth or live beyond the stars.

Don your intergalactic spacesuits, BEYOND by Maureen A. Miller will take you to unknown galaxies and introduce you to some odd beings. This young adult science fiction novel is a fantastic read, and I give it 4 stars.

In the novel, seventeen-year-old Aimee Patterson is accidentally abducted by aliens while out for a walk, and due to the rotation of the galaxies, can't be returned to her planet for five Earth years. While on the Guardian ship Horus, Aimee meets a lot of people--some really handsome, some creepy--and has some interesting experiences. When the ship is affected by a disease, Aimee must work with Warrior Zak to find a cure.

I really liked this novel. For someone who hasn't read much true science fiction, BEYOND is a great introduction into the genre. The technological ideas will blow your mind. I imagined a much more complex plot with schemers and master manipulators, but in the end the plot was straightforward and simple. Whether that added to or detracted from the book, I'm not sure; I enjoyed reading it either way.

I would have liked some more distinction of time on the ship. Understandably, time on the ship is not the same as Earth time, but based on Aimee's routine, it seems like she is only away from Earth for three Earth nights before being returned. The reader only knows of 2 times that Aimee sleeps and one meal; yet Aimee is told that it will be something like an Earth month that she has to remain on the ship before being able to return to Earth, and her body grows into a more adult womanly figure. Time paradoxes aside, the passage of time in the novel was not clearly illustrated, and so it was a tad difficult to get my bearings.

The romance was sweet and a great illustration of the sublime nature of teenage love, but the issue with time makes it difficult for me to determine whether the declarations of love are believable.

On the technical side, the pace was well done, and there weren't any grammatical issues that detracted from my enjoyment of the book.

Overall, this was a great novel, and I look forward to reading the next in the series, telling us what happened to Zak after Aimee is returned to Earth.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Smart new YA series 5 octobre 2012

I was lucky enough to be a beta reader for Ms. Miller's newest book, "Beyond," book 1 in a YA science fiction series. I read quite a few of the author's books and really enjoy them and Ms. Miller's style of writing. This is the first time she's ventured into science fiction for young adults and she's hit a home run with this one. The story follows teenager Aimee Patterson shortly after she graduates from high school. She's used to walking her dog, but when the dog runs off into the woods, Aimee's life is about to change dramatically. She is mistakenly taken by an alien vessel and wakes up to find she is in deep space with no hope for going home. Not everyone on the space ship is happy that Aimee was abducted including Aimee, but when she learns she will not be returned to Earth for 5 years, she does her best to fit in as best she can. While she tries to discourage the romantic overtures from one of the scientists, she finds herself drawn to warrior Zak.

Ms. Miller does a great job of letting the reader into Aimee's inner thoughts and feelings, but without all the teenage angst that so many of the YA books rely on. The writing is smart, witty and even though YA isn't a genre I read often, I couldn't wait to see what happens to Aimee and Zak. The conflicts and a looming disaster makes the pages fly by. By the end of the book, I was a big fan of Zak. I'm looking forward to book 2 in this series and see what new adventures Ms. Miller has in store for these two. Recommended.

Ok, so for a young adult book the character was more mature that most. I'm in my mid 20s and I run far away from any book summary becoming in "17 year old...." but I could ignore her age and get into the book. Now the bad. I was reading about half way into the book when I noticed it seemed like one long day. In fact, except for the last chapter it was set up as one day. Midway through the book others was talk about time but the author randomly stated something about two years passing but it was confusing as I was trying to figure out (1) I thought only a day had past not years (2) was it only earth that 2 years passes or 2 years on the ship because there was talk of time moving differently on the ship.

Overall it was good book for a young adult novel, a ok book as a science fiction romance. This book is set up as part of a series and ended as such. I got this book for free so definitely worth a try if you take the plot with a grain of salt.

I REALLY wanted to give this book five stars. I almost did. The characters are great. I read a different review that put the characters in a great way. There was just enough of naiveté to make it obvious that it was a teenager as the main character but no over the top angst that some writers get stuck in. The setting was believable in a sci-fi kind of way. It was young adult in the best way. The romance in this story was adorable too. There was just enough of a problem in order to make it interesting but it wasn't overly complicated either. I can't say enough good things about the plot and characters. Really well done.

There are just a few things that kept it from being 5 stars. The first being that while the spaceship is really well done, there were not a lot of visual descriptions that gave me something to hold on to. This was noticeable for the spaceship, her room and the planet she visits. There were SO many places that the author could have gone. In one way I am glad she didn't do it over the top because that would have made the whole thing boring. But I wanted more descriptions of the people that she named other than, `they were all good looking with light complexion.' Lastly, there were a few unanswered questions. Not unanswered questions that would lead to a sequel. More like questions I had as a reader that I would have liked answered.

The author also talked about the passage of time, but not whether she aged at all. I think so as no one mentions it but it wasn't addressed. *SPOILER* She's gone from earth 5 years which means she should look early 20s if time passes. But up in space it was more like 6 months time wise. So did she age super fast? * END SPOILER* It was different questions like this that would have made a huge impact on the book.

After all this, I am a new fan. Her books are reasonable priced on eBook sellers and I think I am going to look into her adult novels. Brilliantly done. A lovely debut to the young adult genre.

Originally I thought this would be a stereo typical band geek lands the quarter back story line, but I was wrong. Instead, while Amy happens to be a geek it is her self confidence and intelligence that get her into and out of some sticky situations. Zak, the handsome leader type, is also an outsider in the homogenous world of the Horus. He not only see's Amy's beauty but he also is impressed with her wit and quick thinking. By the time I got to chapter 3 I couldn't stop reading until I was finished with the book. The world building is good, it doesn't over power the story, and the characters are deep. I very much look forward to reading the next book in the series.
