R. James, Linwood Barclay, Umberto Eco, the Bronte sisters, Charles Dickens and many others. Discover for yourself why D. M. Mitchell is being regarded by some as one of the UK’s most original and exciting writers of psychological thrillers, suspense and supernatural fiction.

From reviews of BLACKDOWN:

"Blackdown was another jewel - kept me guessing until the unbelievable climax."
"Suspense, thriller and mystery all wrapped into one. I read thus in one sitting."
"The plot is filled with suspense the reader feels compelled to solve..."
"I really could not put this book down."

It is 1817, Regency England. Thomas Blackdown, a thieftaker and ex-soldier, receives word that his brother and father are in deep trouble and need his help. But Blackdown is a man that harbours bitter memories; a man banished from his homeland because of a terrible accident, and so is reluctant to return to his ancestral home in Somerset.

However, once there he discovers that his brother has been savagely murdered – torn to shreds, some say by a mythical creature the locals call the Blackdown Beast. Thomas Blackdown does not believe in any creature of fantasy, and is determined to bring to justice his brother’s murderer, encouraged by his brother’s fiancé, Julianne Tresham, and aided by the faithful servant Addison.

But Blackdown is quickly drawn deep into a complicated web of deceit, power, greed and murder involving Lord Tresham – Julianne’s father – and the cold Sir Peter Lansdowne. What is the mysterious Lupercal Club? Why do ex-soldiers go missing from Commodore Pettigrew’s travelling theatre? What strange thing is happening in Devilbowl Wood where Blackdown’s brother was found mutilated? And does a savage, hellish creature really prowl the night?

Soon, Blackdown must fight for his own life and face up to his demons both imaginary and real. He will need all his wits and skills to survive if he is ever to discover the shocking truth behind the evil that has penetrated as far as the government itself.

Set in Regency England following the end of the Napoleonic wars, ‘Blackdown’ is D. M. Mitchell at his creative best, crafting a believable world of strange, larger-than-life characters, with his trademark intricate plotting and surprise ending, it is a novel that is a rollicking good thriller, horror and adventure story rolled into one.

And in Thomas Blackdown, Mitchell has given us a hero like no other before – a D’Arcy with bite, a Bond in breeches…

Starting with a gruesome prologue, D. M. Mitchell gives the reader a mystery that is well suited to its time and environment.

Thomas Blackdown , in 1817, is a reluctant hero, a war wearied soldier summoned home to help his estranged family. He is immediately presented with not only devastating news about his brother but also significant changes in his family's reputation and fortunes. The mystery deepens with each chapter and the reader and Thomas are presented with the same subtle clues to try to understand the situation.

This is not a cozy mystery but rather one where violence and the enjoyment of such does not seem unusual in a time when public hangings were considered entertainment.

This is an engaging read and recommended for those who enjoy historical mysteries.

If you traded our hero, Thomas, lately a Captain in the British Military fighting in the Napoleonic Wars and replace him with Bruce Willis in Die Hard, you get where I'm going with this - different time period, song remains the same. Everyone keeps telling Thomas we can use a guy of your talents, fearlessness and use of weapons. Does that sound like an action movie set up or what? Thomas also solves most of his problems by punching, shooting, stabbing, pistol whipping or a combination of all four. He is not the great philosopher.

He gets called home with a letter from his brother asking for help; saying that he and their Father are in serious trouble. When he gets home, everything has changed, nefarious plots are at work, relatives are dead and others are dying. What is a violent soldier to do? Plus there is a mythical beast in the forest ripping people and sheep to shreds. If you are mythical, can you physically rip anything?

The story was fun, if a little light on imagery, characterization and plot. The injury count is high, including final ones. If you have a few hours to spare, like history and action movies, you may find this right up your alley.

I could not believe all the good reviews! This book is in dire need of a good edit. The author's style is much too wordy, with poor sentence construction that was utterly distracting. I could not get past chapter 1.

villian is well characterized, Hero is flawed just enough. Many plot lines are followed like tracks through the DevilsBowl. There is a monster from time immemorial with rituals. Profligate gambling, Estates lost, A colorful traveling troupe of entertainers. "Swiss dieease" --PTSD's label in the Napoleonic is seen in the British soldiers cast aside after the war, making them more than cardboard cast members. Rich deep enjoyable novel with minimal romance. Not a happily ever after ending.

There are several "and" spellings of an. a few misplaced conjunctions and unintended grammatical errors from the writing process. This are not annoyingly frequent.

This is not a Regency Era Romance. Bernard Cornwell fans will like this read.

I don't like to rehash story lines so you won't get that here but I do like to say whether or not this story met my own personal criteria.
Good main Character: check
Character Depth: partial check
Emotionally sympathetic: check on some of the characters (this is not just for heroes and heroines)
Good plot: check
Excellent Plot twists: check
Epilogue: epilogue was useless and should have been the flashback scene of how and why Thomas was such a wounded wanderer. That would have given Thomas more depth right from the start and helped understand his fierce composure and reckless regard for life.
Story: I'm not one for what I consider useless drivel about what a inn looks like, what the surrounding countryside looks like unless it is truly significant to the story e.g. Devilbowl Woods, and I don't like nit picking descriptions of homes and libraries and you get the picture...I skimmed through most of this because it just wasn't relative to the story. The parts that were descriptive and had relevance like coming upon his downtrodden ancestral seat I read.
Lacked Proofing: Typos! Bad grammar, double words or set of words, and incorrect word usage. Not horrible as some but a destraction.

So overall I gave it a 3.5 because if cleaned up a bit it would be a good fast paced murder mystery. I liked Thomas and I liked the ending very much.
