The most pleasing Bach recording I can imagine 14 septembre 2003
Par Anthony Garcia - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
Eduardo Egüez delivers us the the most intimate and musical interpretation of Bach's music I have ever heard.
Marco Mencoboni of E Lucevan Le Stelle and Todd Garfinkle of MA Recordings present this 2 volume series of Bach music on lute.
Both Mencoboni and Garfinkle, I believe, share similar recording techniques and philosophies. Recorded in an Italian monastery, the 2 volumes boast natural acoustics in a perfect acoustic setting.
There is a natural reverb from the architecture of the monastery and I suggest in direct contradiction to the reviewer of volume 1 that it absolutely does not sound like a microphone was placed in the instrument. In fact, there are 2 microphones set at different distances from Egüez but in phase with one another. The monastery was chosen for the recording because of its acoustic qualities.
Mencoboni and Garfinkle use the highest quality recording devices in existence. If you have a high end stereo system, you will not be able to stop listening to this recording.
Egüez interprets with a masterful fusion of emotion and musical knowledge to present Bach in the most musical fashion I have ever heard. Many artists play Bach rather mechanically - Not Egüez. If you are reading this review you probably know that.
I study flamenco and some classical guitar and this recording has inspired me to study Bach. I listen to it at least 10 times a week and every time I discover something new. Bach's sense of harmonic progression and counterpoint shine through and touch every emotion. If you would like to discover Bach for yourself, let this be your first cd - you will not be sorry.
I believe this to be one the best recordings any artist could ever make.
If music touches you, this recording wil be a favorite.

Eduardo Eguez' Volume 2 of the Lute Music of Johann Sebastian Bach as Gorgeous as His Volume I 5 janvier 2006
Par M. Levitt - classical music buff - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD
In my review of Eduardo Eguez' Lute Music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Volume I, I wrote that {Volume I} was as beautiful a recording of Bach's lute music as I have been privileged to hear.

The same comment holds true for Eduardo Eguez' The Lute Music of Johann Sebastian Bach, Volume Two.

In Volume 2, Eguez offers a cross section of Bach's lute music, performing the Partita no.4 (BWV 1006a), and transcriptions of the Sonata no.1 for Unaccompanied Violin, Cello Suite no. 1, and Prelude in C Minor, BWV 999. His playing
is both beautiful and warm, highly expressive, and so natural and spontaneous as to almost be the "standard" for everybody else as to how to play Bach. In terms of sound, I've never heard a lute sound so beautiful or rich unless it was Eguez' Volume 1 of the Lute Music of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Both CDs are essential for guitarists/ lutenists serious about Bach, in addition to either lovers in general of Bach, Baroque music, the guitar or lute.

Strongest possible recommendation!!

Superlative, intimate -- Gold standard material 15 janvier 2013
Par Eyes Open - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD Achat vérifié
The review by Garcia is spot-on. This recording should be a gold standard because of Eguez' recognition as one of the world's preeminent lutenists, the fantastic site selection, the assiduous attention to the detail of specifically designed and hand-built nature of the microphones and other recording gear. The liner notes provide wonderful detail that really ought to be a part of the album description.

If one lacks a high-end stereo system, then listen to this via headphones -- it approaches the level of "mind-blowing." This album can and will transport the listener to an amazing, new place. Yes, it is extraordinarily spatial due to the careful recording and siting of the recording; the monastery itself is an unnamed accompanist. Yes, there is a strong element of temporal transport: combine Bach + a period appropriate recording space + close your eyes, and that = being transported to a beautiful, peaceful, contemplative space. Yes, Eguez studied the composer, he studied the music, he plays the decidedly non-mechanical lute, and he clearly was affected by the monastery, and this all adds up to a delightfully emotive, yet true approach to music that has historically been rather structured and contained. When I listen, I do so with my eyes closed, and I am sure that when I open them, I will be in Italy at Convento dell'Annunziata, and I'll see JS Bach praise Eguez for such a wonderful performance of his music.

Bach never sounded better 6 mai 2014
Par Rosh - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD Achat vérifié
Eduardo Eguez is - in my opinion - one of the most breathtaking virtuosos on the lute. FORGET all the thin sounding, mechanical passages of other lutenists. Eguez is a master and these works are interpreted with such soul and depth. My son and I listen to this and other Eguez albums regularly. My cell phone alarm in the mornings has a piece from this album and there is no sweeter way to wake up. I resisted even giving a review, because I want Eguez to be my own secret. If you like Bach; if you like acoustic guitar; if you like ancient music on original instruments; if you like to hear the very essence of artistry, then get this CD. The recording quality is astounding...you can hear Eguez breathing at times. The packaging is from Japan and even the quality of the cover bespeaks the quality.

Too commercial 28 décembre 2009
Par L. Polgar - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: CD Achat vérifié
Sorry, too commercial for me..bought another recording on Amazon at the same time which I like much better; a French recording in original key...try that one first. This recording makes me feel I am in a restaurant; the others in dream land. Which would you prefer?
