HASH(0x998be354) étoiles sur 5 40's film noir 6 mai 2014
Par Bartok Kinski - Publié sur
This isn't a bad 40's film noir, it's got good direction, nice acting, some nice ploting and it's good until the end. It's got a bit too much "hammy humor" from the cop sidekick, who's always hitting on the women he's asking questions of. Still, not a bad find on a late night. Has the feel of an 'The Alfred Hitchcock Hour' episode yet a lot more dark.

Backlash, 1947 film

A car drives down a highway at night until it is stopped by a police roadblock. This lawyer got an accused murderer off. Red Bailey meets him again; can he get him off again? We see kids playing baseball in a large yard. A burned body was found in a red car on Mulholland Drive. Lawyer Morlan was found by the police. The police visit his widow. The bullet in his heart said “murder”. Lt. McMillan visits O’Neill, the law partner, who knows nothing. The police want to inspect his personal files. What was his personal life like? Morlan had a younger wife. His family doctor is questioned about his health. Nervous indigestion? Or poison? The doctor tells what happened. The police question the maid about their personal life.

Dorothy tells about their vacation home in Topanga Canyon. Conroy is there, the District Attorney is investigating. Lt. McMillan asks about telephone usage; a call to Gloria Vale. They go to investigate. Gloria wears a fur coat when O’Neill brings her home. “Marion Gordon!” She is questioned about that telephone call. It was from Bailey! [Why did he call? Is there a hint to a solution here?] Conroy questions O’Neill. Next it is Lt. McMillan. O’Neill reads from Morlan’s diary! Can a quiet and refined woman want to murder her husband? Mrs. Morlan shows up to answer questions. “But this isn’t true!” “How did it happen?” Cathy and John converse. Lt. McMillan wants the X-rays from San Quentin n Bailey.

They found Cathy’s gun near Morlan’s body, it was the murder weapon! Miss Gordon gets a call from Red Bailey. The police are there to take them in. Gordon doesn’t know much. O’Neill answers questions. Wiretapping is illegal, but not a Dictaphone. “You can’t prove it.” Red Bailey is questioned. He has nothing to lose. He tells what happened. [No locks on doors then?] Cathy arrives, Jerry O’Neill takes her home. That night a man walks by the railroad station. Another man shows up, he drinks out of a bottle. Will something go wrong? Cathy gets a telephone call to summon her to that Topanga Canyon home. She gets a surprise! The police arrive to sort out the mess. We hear the facts and the solution to this murder mystery.

This is an interesting story even though it is a lower budget movie. I believe it’s value is the result of being based on a true crime from the 1940s. Erle Stanley Gardner used a similar story in one of his “Perry Mason” novels and a “Cool and Lam” novel. It may have inspired a Graham Greene novel and its movie. The original crime was done for insurance fraud; it worked until an insurance investigator wondered why the widow moved far away after collecting her husband’s life insurance. The problem here is finding a suitable donor for a fiery accident.
