Présentation de l'éditeur

Some things are sweeter than revenge.

“I need a boyfriend.”

Hearing those words from the mouth of his very straight ex-friend is enough to make columnist and editor Nate Gray choke on his Corona. It’s been thirteen years since Kellan Brooks’s father crushed Nate’s family on his climb to wealth and power. Even longer since he entrusted Kellan with the confession that he might be gay—only to have his best friend out and humiliate him to their entire high school. The last thing Nate expects is Kellan begging for his help.

Breaking off his engagement to a senator’s daughter was the last straw for Kellan’s CEO father. Frustrated at being cut off, his father’s stinging words—that he wishes Kellan had never been born—still ringing in his ears, Kellan turns to Nate. In a move worthy of a corporate raider, Kellan plans the ultimate revenge. Come out as the boyfriend of the man his homophobic father betrayed.

Convincing Nate to play along isn’t easy. It’s even harder to figure out why the lie feels so close to the truth.

Warning: Contains old friends, old enemies, a dramatic cat rescue, soft drink references and a lot of teasing before the steamy sex. Readers are cautioned against drinking any beverage while reading to avoid accidental snorting or spraying of said beverages.

Bad Company
Nate Gray has not talked to his straight former best friend Kellan Brooks since high school. Kellan is plotting revenge on his overbearing father. Kellan believes that Nate will be the perfect collaborator because Kellan's father crushed Nate's family, while climbing the ladder to wealth and power.
Bad Company has a well written intricate plot of emotional chaos, including plenty of childhood secrets, jealousy, guilt, control issues and fear of rejection, the characters have a difficult time coming to terms with their true desires. The intimacy is superb. The characters are convincing. Nate is a perfectionist, always had to be right and would make the facts fit whatever he decided was the truth. He's sarcastic to hide his pain. Seeing Kellan again brings back Nate's memories of Kellan's betrayal during high school. Kellan had gone from feeling like a part of Nate to being a cruel stranger. These betrayals caused Nate to build a wall around his heart, as well as encouraged him to keep his sex life casual.
Kellan is a friendly easygoing man. He's tried to live up to his father's controlling demands and in doing so, he lost his own identity. The months living with Nate help Kellan to be his own man, along with discovering the love that had been missing from his life. The original plan for revenge brings about several revelations for both Kellan and Nate as the story unfolds. K.A. Mitchell has a talent for creating intelligent characters in the mist of turmoil interwoven with side-splitting humor. The storyline illustrates a realistic view of social bigotry. Bad Company is an incredible romance that I extremely enjoyed.

This was close to a DNF for me. Kellen was just so incredibly spoiled & self centered I had no energy left to be outraged that his dad cut him off. Boo Hoo, he gets cut off 13 years out of high school and finally has to work for a living. His most successful stint before was as a reality show contestant. He also managed to get himself engaged about 5 times and instead of breaking up in person with the last one, he made sure that the media gets a picture of him with his face in another woman's chest. So add coward to the list of sterling qualities he possess.

In a way, his homophobic father is basically handing him an opportunity. But instead of focusing on finally growing up, he cooks up a lame scheme to get revenge on his dad by pretending to be gay & asking his old school 'friend' to help him out. This is the friend he said sayonara to after he outed him in high school. He didn't participate in the bullying of Nate in school, but he sat back & watched when he knew he could have done something to help. Nate, the other player in this scenario, is a little more likable at first & seems cool & comfortably out of the closet until his personality takes a reverse turn to rigid & uptight.

If this story was about 2 people reconciling after a lot of explanations & soul searching & rekindling their friendship maybe I'd buy into it more. The soul searching never happens. There is no character growth. Instead late in the book there's an explanation for Kellen's behavior which appears to be done to wrap up all that ugly past in a big bow. The chemistry was off as well, as Kellen & Nate came across more as drinking buddies rather than lovers.

Bottom line is I didn't like the characters too much which means I wasn't rooting for them as a couple which means this book failed as a romance for me. This is my first K.A. Mitchell book. If this is representative of the books she writes, I doubt I'm going back for more.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Loved the banter 6 août 2011

Bad Company is a delightful if somewhat unrealistic tale of Kellan Brooks' plan to get revenge on his father for cutting him off after his latest engagement crashes and burns. In order to do that he goes to former childhood friend Nate Gray and ask him to be his pretend boyfriend to tick his father off completely. Kellan isn't gay, but Nate is. The drama unfolds after this event as Nate and Kellan have to pretend to be madly in love, which isn't hard for Nate because he's secretly had a crush on his former best friend forever; but the question is, after all is said and done, will Kellan still want Nate after the charade is over?

Bad Company is one of those novels you have to suspend disbelief in the plot and just go with the flow because once you do you'll fall madly in love with the two main protagonists. Nate and Kellan are adorable together, whether they are fighting or making love, they leap off the page with their passion for each other. Plus the banter between these two characters is some of the cleverest I have read in a long time. It rivals Dave and Maddie from Moonlighting - that is a high compliment from me since I loved that show! But most of all I love Kellan's journey from spoiled rich brat to a more responsible person who will fight to keep Nate.

In the past I have enjoyed Ms. Mitchell's books, but to me with Bad Company she has surpassed her previous novels and created two characters who are dynamic, complicated and flawed, yet redeemable. A true talent is exposed in this work. Hopefully she will continue in this universe. 4.5 stars.

Normally K.A. Mitchell is an autobuy for me. But I'm glad this wasn't the first story I've read by this author, or I wouldn't have tried again and I'd have been missing a lot. Though well-written as always, with funny parts, the connection between Nate and Kellan finally seems fragile, not based on anything very solid, even a bit rushed. Both emotions and arguments are left unresolved. There's a confession towards the end that makes the story more believable, but well, I just wish there had been a little more time spent on building the characters, giving them both a little bit more depth and maturity, so that I could have had a little more faith in their chances at a HEA.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 One of K. A. Mitchell's Best 17 mai 2014

This is one of those books where the set-up had me really nervous: too contrived and implausible, the kind of thing that Hollywood loves for its rom-coms, featuring characters who never behave like actual human beings. But I am learning not to underestimate K. A. Mitchell, because both Nate and Kellan are two of my favorites of her characters. I have a soft spot for couples who have known each other forever, and you believe it with these two. I also liked that they were seriously flawed but not to the point that I hated them. I spent the first half of the book worrying that Kellan was too big a jerkwad to be redeemed and Nate was too completely superior, and then halfway through the balance shifted. Kellan was a sweet-heart and Nate was never going to get the stick out of his you-know-where to have a relationship. All of this is just to say I was invested. I loved seeing Kellan turn into an actual worthwhile human being, I found Nate's hyper-complicated self-righteousness endearing.

Minor Spoiler: I'd also praise Mitchell for not turning the dad into a caricatured villain. I generally find them tiresome in and of themselves, in addition to being unrealistic and overly convenient. The father wasn't a good guy, but he wasn't all things that are evil and hateful either. It fit with the story well since it belied Nate's black and white attitude, but it also made the story more realistic and satisfying.

Bottom Line: K. A. Mitchell is probably my favorite M/M contemporary author and this book is a great example of why.
