J'adore Ballet Beautiful.
J'ai commencé par les blasts en streaming, puis j'ai acheté le dvd 60 minutes et enfin le livre.
Le livre explique bien la philosophie derrière cette méthode.
Il ne s'agit pas de quelque chose d'extrême mais de trouver un juste milieu.
Les exercices sont très efficaces. Je fais environ 30 minutes par jour et quand je n'en fais pas ça me manque.
Contrairement à d'autres qui présentent leur méthode de manière assez arrogante, Mary Helen Bowers a quelque chose de très humain, on a envie de croire qu'elle veut nous aider à être en forme dans un corps dans lequel on se sentira mieux.

J'ai découvert Marie-Helen par hasard. J'ai d'abord acheté ses 2 dvd "60 minutes workout" et "blasts series". Sa méthode fonctionne bien pour peu qu'on s'y attèle minimum 2 fois semaines pour le programme complet. J'avoue déjà voir des changements!

J'apprécie également beaucoup M-H car elle est très sensible aux "femmes communes". Elle n'est ni élitiste, ni axée sur les Ballerines. Elle est très humaine et partage son expérience dans ce livre avec beaucoup de délicatesse. J'apprécie sa personnalité à travers ses ouvrages.

Pour celles qui ont déjà les vidéos, le livre offre des variations d'exercices qui ne figurent pas dans les dvds. Aussi, il y a bien plus dans le livre que juste des exercices.
On y découvre qui elle est, ses expériences et sa mise en place de Ballet Beautiful.

Attention, tout est en anglais! (Pour les dvd, les images suffisent à comprendre.)

I am a devoted fan of Ballet Beautiful method/concept. I own both DVD's and almost all blast videos available online. No surprise I am an owner of the printed version of the book as well!

Why would I recommend this book to other girls and women - and not only to those who love ballet as I do?

First of all, the book is written in very pleasant, calm and sensible style. It is divided into three parts (these are divided into chapters).

The parts cover all you need for building some kind of regimen or just approach to your work out routine and food choices:

* mindset
* the actual work out (stretching exercises, the classic 60 minute workout and three 15-minutes blasts workouts: 1 for arms and 2 cardios). Here you also obtain some basic ballet terminology, few basic BB principles
* third part talks about the approach to food - shows what food choices are great, the essential philosophy here is the intuitive/instinctive and very sensible approach to food. I apprecciated the suggestions for breakfasts, snacks, lunches etc. There are also suggestions for how many times per week to work out (ideal week, a moderate and light week). You will also find usable and practical tips on how to deal with cravings etc. In the very end of this part and of the book itself you can find few quick and healthy, yet easy recipes provided by Mary Helen and her friends/family.

To sum it up:

* Strong points of the book:
- sensible and pleasant style of writing
- usable, practical information, no redundancy or fashionable information which would be annoying
- few new exercises also to those who already own the DVD's
- exercices are indeed challenging and targeted, very simple, I highly apprecciate that there is no need to use any special equipment and all positions are ,,doable"
- great approach to food, eating and great tips for how to cope with cravings
- the mindset part is just great - this topic is the key to become successful in one's goal of working out on regular basis

* What I would like to have in the book (subjective preferrations):
- the foreword by Natalie Portman could be more detailed about her own work out for the movie
- there is a sentence that there will follow some information on two different goals: losing weight and maintaning of the weight (p. 185 in UK version). I could not find it (maybe it is there somewhere?). Of course, I am able to figure this out by myself, just would like to know anything special - if there is anything special on this topic
- I would be glad if I could find more tips on how to combine BB workouts with other activities like running, swimming etc.(this was actually available on the blog, it's not in the book)
- there could be more exercises on arms (or few different ones than Swan Arms)
- I would be glad to have some tips for different body types here (e.g. what kind of exercises are great for people with not very slim legs or for those who have not very slim arms etc.)
- there could be some tips on regeneration or how to take care of one's joints (I guess working out few days a week on regular basis should be combined with some bodycare - maybe some supplements suggestions? Or other suggestions?)

Overall, I highly recommend this book and the program. I am glad this book does not flow in the fashion of any extreme trends/lifestyles. I consider it to be safe also for teenagers for its sensibility and focus on health and nutrition.

I've been doing Ballet Beautiful for just under a year and it's been amazingly transformative for me. This book embodies everything I love about Ballet Beautiful and Mary Helen. It's funny, optimistic, sensible and very challenging. The book is filled with all the exercises that helped me change my shape but it's also got the essential advice and support that helped me make those changes permanent. It guided me in remaking my way of thinking and about my body, food and exercise and maybe more importantly it revamped my confidence in the fact that I have the power to create new healthy habits in my life. This book talks to my whole person - mind and body! And it even gets into all those icky, negative feelings about bodies / food / accomplishment that we all get and that block us from making progress.

Also I find it so easy to stay positive and connected because of all the resources available in the book but also online at Ballet Beautiful anytime of day / night. That's made all the difference for me. It used to be so frustrating when life didn't allow me time to exercise, but now that I know don't have to run to the gym to get a great workout I feel confident that I can keep it up. And I've learned how to be realistic about setbacks, the kind of things I used to get so mad at myself about. I "move on" as Mary Helen advises. And guess what? It's working!

I'm gonna be honest here...this book honestly deserves 5 stars. The book itself is absolutely gorgeous. I just wish there were at least a few color photographs in the book, just as a personal preference, but the black and white was still pretty to look at.

The book is easy flip through when transitioning from one exercise to the next. I simply lay it down on the floor next to my mat or prop it up against something and refer to it from time to time. The exercises in it are essentially the same as her Streaming Blasts and DVD's, but there is still quite a bit of new material in the book that is not featured in either the Blasts or the DVD's (such as the Reverse Bridge, Parallel Pulse in Plie, etc.). I admit, I was actually surprised to see how much I was sweating and exerting myself while doing some of the moves; I'm no novice to Ballet Beautiful, and I wasn't expecting that from a book workout!

Although Mary Helen says that you don't need any dance experience to do some of the moves, I have to disagree with her. There are some terms and positions that one must be familiar with before attempting, and if it weren't for my dance background, I would have been hopelessly lost. Not to mention having at least some experience in ballet will help you out in proper form. Even when it comes to figuring out how some of the exercises go (like the Standing Abs - that one took a little while to figure out, thanks to a misleading picture), at least some sort of dance background is something I'd definitely recommend. However, if you're naturally sharp at picking moves up pretty quickly, then I suppose you'd do OK.

I wouldn't buy the book if you were a complete Ballet Beautiful beginner; as you'd probably struggle trying to figure out how some of the exercises would be performed. To anyone else who has already tried Ballet Beautiful (either via the Streaming Blasts or the DVD's, or even both), you'll probably be able to find your way through the book without too much trouble.

I look forward to seeing a sequel; I certainly hope Mary Helen publishes another one!

As an additional note, the Reverence at the end of the Classic workout was a nice touch. :) It made the entire thing feel like a real ballet class.

Mary Helen Bowers has a kind, conversational way of writing that gently shows you a healthy way of looking at food and exercising. She emphasizes a clean, well rounded diet and no calorie counting or food obsession. Her attitude of seeing food as fuel is refreshing and effective.
Then there's the workout. My goodness, does it work. Sure, i wouldn't exactly do it in front of anyone (the bridge series looks like you're reverse humping the floor tbh) but you definitely feel it working just where she says it will.
I've been using her dvd (the classic 60 minute one) for a few weeks and i've noticed my legs and arms literally changing shape. No amount of lunges or squats have ever toned my thighs like her workouts do. Plus i move much more gracefully and elegantly (my girlfriend has even commented on that!)
So all in all, buy this book! Then buy the accompanying dvd because it's beautiful and helps you understand the movements. Together, they'll change your life.

I am a huge fan of Mary Helen Bowers and her dvds and streaming videos. I purchased her book to see if it would add any extra insights. I enjoyed her message about the importance of not punishing yourself over the occasional not so healthy choice and her emphasis on consistency and fitting in workouts where you can. However, I think that the exercise portion of the book is a little hard to follow. If you want to follow her toning exercises, the dvds and streaming videos are the best bet.
