Présentation de l'éditeur

The Federation has endured for hundreds of years, but now it is dying, killed by the corruption and decadence of the Senate and the rising power of military warlords. The shipping lanes are coming apart, the colonists are revolting and outside forces are pressing against undefended borders. Now, as one warlord makes a bid for supreme power, the entire edifice is on the verge of falling apart. Two officers, bearers of a proud military tradition, may be all that stands between the Federation and total destruction.

For Admiral Marius Drake, there is no greater cause than the survival of humanity’s prized unity. For the young and ambitious Roman Garibaldi, the growing civil war offers a chance of promotion far beyond the usual boundaries. Together, they will save the Federation or die trying.

But with the Senate suspicious of any competent commanding officers, their success may condemn them to an inglorious death.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 great as usual with Nuttall 31 août 2014

It is one of my favorite SF authors.

I love his disillusioned and cynical view of societies and his mastering of depicting all the forces behind the immobilism of those societies. Hi brings those ideas at the galactical level and shows all the dark sides of humanity in general.

Please continue writing great books.

The historic references used to build the story become all to real when you see how politics rage out of control and how democracy gets perverted into something semi-hereditary and elitist, nepotism is rife and society stagnates trying to maintain a status quo. Whether the reference stems from the Roman Empire, the more modern European countries or the continental US, they all made and make similar mistakes because the either wrong people get elected to lead or the right people become corrupted or chained by those in the establishment that fail to step aside when their time has come and frantically try to maintain their position.

Unfortunately, one can never live in the past and societies and their government systems, like biological species, need to change to adapt to the needs of the moment (even if changing means going back to a different variation of something that has existed before, because of a current "need") or become obsolete and eventually extinct. Unfortunately humanity 's leaders never learn the lessons from the past and always believe it will be different this time.

The writer captures all these elements and weaves them into a story injected with plenty of action and adventure to avoid becoming a political history narrative, but if one reads between the lines, the lessons are there.

i enjoyed this book. I acknowledge the tribute to Babylon 5 made by the author in some of the names of characters & places he chose for this romp through dangerous stars. I liked being able to recognise the parity between the Political climate within the federation & our western world today. I would hate to think that his fiction could be an insight into our own futures on Earth.
The story itself has a fine mix of situations. There's the not so enlightened self interest, creating political manipulations which ultimately, destroy those who instigated the machinations. There's loyal fortitude inspiring heroic daring in the face of great danger. (I know I found myself holding my breath more than once). There are numerous strategies & battles, sacrifice & heart felt loss. All the ingredients are there for an above average story.
I felt compelled to keep reading to find out what happened next, & when that happens.......well I know It's got me & therefore is a tribute to the author. Both his imagination & writing style are captivating. Well done Christopher. I look forward to the next instalment.

At some point during the novel, one begins to wonder if the reader is in the midst of science fiction, Caesar, or Churchill. The novel also suggests the conclusion that the author would really hope, in future works, to fill in some few events in the expansive history of the universe that has been brought to life. While the historical and political aspects help create a multi-dimensional story, with a deeper background than one usually finds, the detail and social interplay can distract from the primary plot lines. That said, there is more to see and experience, and more adventures to be experienced in this socio-historical science fiction enterprise.

At the same time, one departs this journey with a sense that, as with other authors, Mr. Nuttall has found the perfect solution for a protagonist. Reminiscent of Julius Caesar, it is tempting to summarize as "Veni, vidi, vici"....
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Solid even if a bit stolid 26 août 2014

A solid albeit not particularly original plot (corrupt central government that foments insurrections even among its most loyal supporters) with well-formed characters. The story is entertaining and fast-paced even if the two storylines that are intertwined seemed somewhat forced together. The book pulls together many of the themes found in most of Nuttal books, and while this is on one hand a strength that makes for a reasonably enjoyable easy reading, the book still reads a little too much like a recasting of previous storylines with the primary intent of serving as a foundation for a new series (which the ending clearly points to). Nevertheless, not a purchase I regretted as it was a fun and easy (summer) read.
4.0 étoiles sur 5 Good book for the SciFi aficionado! 13 décembre 2014

This is a good paced sci-fi action/space opera book that is hard to put down once you have started reading it. It carries the same decline of sosciety that most of the authours books does, but its not exagerated in any way and finds itself well in the story. I was also happy to see that the characters are portrayed in a good manner without beeing stereotypical och macho. There are even strong female characters, something thats not very common in sci-fi books. As usual with this authour the sci-fi tech is spot on and there is a lot of focus on the drama in the plot.

I recomend this book to anyone that liked the ark royal series, im looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
