Everything you need to know to know about L.R Hubbard and Scientology is in this book. However, the number of misprints in the E-version is quite surprising and must even be confusing for readers whose first language is not English.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Refreshed Release is AWESOME! 13 mars 2014
Par FredricRice - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle
Oh hell yes! A new release of the definitive classic!

I read the original release decades ago, and even back then it was the *definitive* research exposure of L. Ron Hubbard and the Scientology organization that he created. Russel Miller had traveled the world collecting research information, collecting court and FBI documentation, interviewing witnesses, interviewing ex-operators and ex-customers of Hubbard's criminal organization, and he organized the valuable information in to a well-researched, well-written expose' of all things known and suspected about Hubbard and Scientology.

First time readers of this new release will find details about how the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States handled not only public complaints about Hubbard and his frauds but also how the FBI handled profoundly disturbed conspiracy-drenched lunatic kook-spew letters written by Hubbard to the FBI to denounce all kinds of invisible enemies that Hubbard was plagued with, from Communists and Nazis to aliens from outer space, Hubbard's profound mental problems dripped from every letter he wrote to the FBI seeking to enlist their help in crushing invisible boogeymen.

One of the most profoundly valuable sources of information that Miller acquired was a glut of "secret" documentation provided by one-time Scientology customer Gerald "Gerry" Armstrong, a man who emerged from the Scientology corporation as one of the world's best-known human rights heroes who fought against Scientology's crimes and abuses and who remains one of the world's best-loved Humanitarians working within the arena of opposing Scientology's crimes and abuses.

This is a "must-read" book. If you have never researched what Scientology is, what Scientology does, if you have never researched why L. Ron Hubbard did what he did against society, what drove his madness, what the financial frauds and endless fake front organizations he created were and why he created them, this is *the* definitive work that you must read.

Perhaps the best selling point for the new release is the fact that when the original work was published and hit Europe with a BIG splash, the Scientology corporation filed endless lawsuits against Miller, his publisher, and everyone else they could think of to try to stop the publishing of the truth about Scientology and the truth about L. Ron Hubbard.

Scientology engaged in racketeering harassment, human rights crimes, and other criminal activities against Miller et al. in an effort to attempt to intimidate the publishers and author in to recalling the book. That effort failed in Europe and half the world saw the truth about what Scientology is and what Scientology does.

In the United States the criminal enterprise was much more successful in getting the book suppressed, and something less than 100,000 copies were made available to researchers in the U.S. The fact that Scientology wanted the information suppressed and stopped speaks volumes about the accuracy and truthfulness of Miller's work, and a refreshed, new release of the work should manage to cause the current owners/operators of the Scientology corporation that much more anger and frustration that the truth is once again being spread around the world.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Detailed and thorough account of the life of L Ron Hubbard 29 mars 2014
Par Amazon Customer - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format:Format Kindle|Achat vérifié
This is the definitive historical reference work on L Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology. There is information in this book that you will find nowhere else, especially about his early life. The author did a very detailed analysis of L Ron Hubbard, the man.

Scientologists will complain that it paints a picture at odds with the official history promoted by the Church, that it unfairly concentrates on his flaws. Was he a closet Satanist, worshiping in the Aleister Crowley tradition with the quintessential rocket scientist Jack Parsons, eventually running off with Parson's girlfriend and his money? Or was he assigned to clean out a group of Satan worshipers undercover? Did he have an undistinguished naval career marked by a 3 day attack on a non-existent submarine? Or was he crippled and blinded in battle in World War II, serving in Navy Intelligence? Liar and con man or modern-day messiah? You have to do the research yourself and see, but this is the book to start with.

Tellingly, in all the litigation Scientology brought to kill this book and prevent the truth from becoming publicly known, they did not dispute the facts presented. They did not sue for libel or defamation. They did not dispute specific facts because they could not.

Believe what you wish about the nature of man and God. If you are a Scientologist, or curious about the subject, you have a right to your beliefs and to say what you will about them publicly. However, if you are the slightest bit curious about the life, loves and adventures of L Ron Hubbard the man you need to read this book and the excellent "A Piece of Blue Sky" by Jon Atack. Not the official Scientology screed.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Lots of information, not a page-turner 16 septembre 2014

Soooooooo much information is in this book. There is so much detail that you wonder how the author could have collected all of it. Assuming that all the information is correct (and it has to be more accurate than the church's version), this is the most complete (real) biography of Hubbard that exists. I enjoyed reading it because it is interesting, however, I did not find it to be a true page turner. I agree with the author, the true story of his life is just as interesting or more interesting than the fake story pushed by the church. I'm glad I read it, and I recommend it to anyone that is interested or who has left the church.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Everything you wanted to know about L. Ron Hubbard but were afraid to ask 7 avril 2014

Having read many of the Scientology-damning books published in the last 20 years or so--Lawrence Wright, Jenna Miscavige Hill, Janet Reitman, Jon Atack, Mark Headley, John Sweeney and more--I can say unequivocally that Russell Miller's "Bare-Faced Messiah" is the Holy Grail when it comes to stripping away the myth of founder L. Ron Hubbard.

If you are at all acquainted with Hubbard's story, many of the incidents related here will be familiar to you. But you will learn bizarre--sometimes touching--details that you've never read or heard before.

In short, this is investigative journalism at its finest. Well-written, well-documented and packed with information, this biography tears the lid off the shiny stories about Hubbard's "incredible" life and achievements. They are incredible, all right, but not for the reasons Scientologists would have you believe.

A very interesting account of the life of the founder of the cult of Scientology, which suffers from a few defects:

1) While I don't doubt the overall veracity of the account, it's not as well-sourced as I would have hoped. There are lots of named sources for the material, but there are also a lot of anonymous ones. Given how dangerous Scientology has made itself to its detractors, this probably isn't surprising.

2) As is often the case in works of this type, the author projects thoughts into the minds of his subjects that, while reasonable enough, cannot possibly be verified. As Evander Holyfield's manager said when asked if he thought Mike Tyson _intended_ to bite his fighter's ear: "You can never really know what is in the mind of another person." Good advice for biographers who aren't writing in the Michael Shaara style.

3) The author's understanding of American law and American history is not sound. He should not have ventured opinions in these areas if he wasn't willing to do research into them, which makes one question the soundness of some of his other research. This distraction needn't have happened. For example, the author indulges in the trope that America of the 1950's was an hysterical lunatic asylum of anti-communism. Yet within the pages of his own study he subsequently demolishes his own contention, since none of the many people that LRH falsely accused of being communists were ever threatened -- nor as far as we can even tell given so much as a second look -- by the FBI, and indeed, the FBI came to the (almost certainly correct) conclusion that Hubbard's accusations originated in the mind of a paranoid head-case.

4) Despite the claims by some reviewers, I don't really think was a very even-handed treatment. If the author had dispensed with his snarky remarks about Hubbard and his cult and simply let the facts speak for themselves, the evidence of history presented is enough to indict and convict LRH and his following. His editorializing, while admittedly infrequent, is frankly juvenile and unprofessional, and detracts from the quality of the book overall. It need not have done.

All that said: it's well written, presents the facts and is an easy biographical read in crisp style with plenty of detail. With these cautionary notes, a worthwhile and informative purchase.
