Présentation de l'éditeur

Buffalo Trace Distillery Tested The Effectiveness Of 5, 10, and 15 Gallon Barrels for Aging Bourbon Whiskey. Chuck Cowdery's article about that experiment, published in his American whiskey newsletter, The Bourbon Country Reader, caused a sensation, especially among the micro-distillers who swear by small barrels. This small book includes that original article as well as some additional, related material. Some of it is new and appears here for the first time. It is being published as an ebook for the benefit of people who want to read it, but don't want to shell out for a subscription to the newsletter. The community of people who have an interest in this sort of thing is small but ardent. This seems to be the best way to make it available to the greatest number of people without just giving it away as a blog post.

I started this article prepared to disagree. Chuck Cowdery writes well researched and well thought-out articles in plain language. if you want to onow anything about bourbon or whiskey, this is the authority

This is a collection of previously published articles and blog posts, all related to the subject of the effects of aging on whiskey. The clear theme is that there are no substitutes to the tried and true methods of producing whiskey that measures up to the standard of a great sipping whiskey. You can make whiskey in small barrels, you can cut the aging time, but doing either of these will not result in a product with the same characteristics of a traditionally produced and aged product.

You may disagree with the author, but he submits interesting facts and presents his case lucidly.

I am considering micro-produced whiskey, and I found the articles helpful and well worth the price and reading time.

As much as it was enjoyable to read, it was not much more then that: enjoyable but no real news, or thorough analysis.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 For 99 cents, a must buy and read 23 mars 2013

This originally appeared as a magazine article which summarized Buffalo Trace's extensive experiment aging bourbon in 5, 10 and 15 gallon oak barrels over a period of five years, with annual testing and evaluation. This experiment was instituted at about the time that micro-distilleries were claiming that whisky aged for short periods in small barrels produced bourbons "just as good" as traditional bourbons aged for say 6 years in large, 53 gallon barrels.

Author Cowdery has written a series of both hardcover and e-books about bourbon and is highly respected for his work and his understanding of the making and aging of bourbon, as well as cooperage. I don't want to steal his thunder - you can invest your hard earned 99 cents and find out his conclusion, but let me say his article is fair and competent. As far as the handful of single sentence put downs, I'd bet a dollar that these were written by the ADI, whose business depends on the myth of small barrel aging to convince erstwhile distillers to believe they can survive the first five years in business by "making a product just as good as 6 year old whiskey in four months".

Go on - drop a buck and you'll agree it was worth six times its cost - just like the small barrels, lol...

5.0 étoiles sur 5 Very Interesting Information 20 juin 2013

You hear a lot of small craft distillers that are trying to get into the bourbon business talk about using smaller barrels to accelerate the aging process. This information tends to contradict their claims. Good to gather as much information as possible so you have a better understanding of pros and cons to various production & maturation processes and can make a better informed decision when buying bourbon. Enjoyed reading, very short, easy read.
