People tend to criticize this book because it's too small and basic. Big deal! It's priced accordingly and the title clearly says "Basic". That aside, the information is as clear and concise and no-nonsense as you can get for this subject. I've read several more "complete" and technical books on the subject, and it was only until I read this book that things actually came into perspective. Believe me, there is no better book to get a clear overview on how to build a small, efficient studio. After that, and armed with foreknowlege, you can get the technical stuff.

Half the book talks about soundproofing, a quarter on VERY basic wiring, and a quarter on a glossary. It's miniature too-the size of a passport. Not a good basic overview of studio design.

...just enough information. I'm busy, man, so are you - you are a project musician trying to build a project studio, probably wondering to yourself how in the world owens corning 703 can be so difficult to need a book with simple diagrams, simple language to tell you what you need to know. If you are building a room for bob clearmountain, then this ain't for you- if you are like the rest of the 99% of us just trying to fit a studio into your exisiting space on a budget- I think that this is the way to go....

This small introductory (basic) book is big on sound and practical advice.

It's possible to spend a lot of money setting up a home studio, and given the inherent limitations of typical residential spaces much of this can be wasted by applying out of context theory. I was seriously considering investing $ 14 K in doors and windows for my studio. After spending $ 7.95 on this little book I'm going with a more basic approach that's suited to the other elements in the space that I now understand will set the overall acoustic performance that can be achieved. In the process I'm going to save about $ 10 K. Talk about a return on investment!

Notice I've already used the word "basic" twice in this short review. That's what this book is, and it doesn't pretend to be anything else. The approach that author Paul White advocates is simple, down to earth, practical, and yes, basic. If you're looking for a comprehensive and fully authoritative tome, look elsewhere. This is a primer which will get you started in the right direction, and may well be all you ever need.

This is a good book for someone who knows nothing about soundproofing, the lingo to go along with it, and acoustics. It is a very fast read and provides a glossary with quite a few terms. There is also a section on studio wiring that is simply there for some reason or another.

This is a very beginner book but does what its name suggests: basic introduction. It is unlikely for someone to get confused with this book. It will simply get one affiliated with the terms and common outlook of acoustics and soundproofing.

I recommend this for all beginners.
