Be the News: A Guide to Going Viral With Your Human Interest Story is written by seasoned marketing strategist, Lori Gertz, who learned firsthand how the media acts when it is made aware of a story it can sink its teeth into. Her experience managing her client's public relations campaigns just didn’t compare to her experience becoming the news in a viral way.

Gertz’s personal retelling of how her family became the subject of a media frenzy after they went public to create awareness around the heartbreaking issue of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is woven throughout this thought provoking book illustrating both examples of what TO DO and what NOT TO DO when you aim to Be the News.

With this step by step guide to going viral with your story, more people can stand up for their right to effect change and make a difference. So go ahead, think about going viral, but don't do anything until you read Be the News. It will prepare you in a way no other book will.

About The Author

After much rumination and over 2,000 hours spent on writing a memoir of our personal family story entitled Mama Can't Kiss It Better, I found myself wondering about the 15 minute of fame rule. How do news stories that dominate the landscape of every media venue in the country end up looking like isolated examples with nary a trace of change effected by them just a few months or years later? Is it apathy or is it just because we are a flash in the pan society? I refuse to subscribe to either of those possibilities and can merely surmise that there just aren't tipping points on the meaningful issues at the foundation of the stories. So, I set aside my memoir to write this simple to follow How-To book about going viral.

I have been writing since I could pick up a pencil. I have lived a life where fact is stranger than fiction and have written only non-fiction to that end.

My seasoning of over 26 years of public and media relations and strategic marketing expertise didn't even begin to prepare me for the days I hid in my basement avoiding the media on a hunt for my story. I wrote the book from the standpoint of the things I did right in addition to the things I did wrong, but mostly from the standpoint of things I didn't think about at all as an outgrowth of the intention to advocate on a larger issue.

With this step by step guide to going viral with your story, more people can stand up for their right to effect change and make a difference. So go ahead, think about going viral, but don't do anything until you read Be the News. It'll prepare you for your media adventure like no other book could. Scroll up and grab your copy now.

This little book is a gem: useful and sincere, and most importantly fulfilling a need. For anyone attempting to navigate the treacherous and complicated waters of modern media to promote or shed light on a human interest story, there has never really been any kind of guidebook - until now. Gertz covers all the essentials while providing a very human voice that warns of pitfalls while making sure that the reader keeps an eye on the prize: sympathetic and effective press coverage. An easy read that covers a surprising amount of informative and valuable ground in a very manageable number of pages. Plus her warmth and humor indicate an indomitable spirit that shines through every word. Go for it!

Lori Gertz gives the reader a concise, thought-provoking, insightful and extremely interesting "how-to" guide for communicating a "human interest" story. Lori dissects the entire process, for the reader, in a point-by-point manner that makes the process seem quite organized. I found this to be quite artful, since exposing a human interest story can be a scary, unsure, vulnerable thing to do. By using her own life as a cautionary tale, Lori gives us many points to think about; points that would not even be considered, should we have never read her book. I especially liked her take on presenting the story to online sources vs print. Thank goodness I am not the only person who still believes that our electronic world still has a place for fact-checked, multiple sourced, printed material.

The author provides the reader with questions to consider, should they feel compelled to tell their story. Topics such as who to trust with the story, editors you never meet, sound bites, media temptations of hotel rooms and integrity on morning shows are things I would never of considered, had I not read Lori's book. I especially enjoyed learning the difference between "ego-driven, self promotion" and doing a story for the greater good, not for becoming a celebrity. That gave my own, personal, human interest ideas a real litmus test, before sending them out to the Universe.

Having had a mentally ill child, myself and needing other people to, in my case temporarily, care for her, I could feel, in the bottom of my soul, the gut-wrenching pain that the author communicated, to the reader, about her choices. We as parents can feel like failures if all our hard work and dedication to fine parenting is not paid off with a healthy, happy, serene child. We, from early childhood, are taught that if you work hard, study hard, dedicate yourself to something and remain consistent, we will be successful in your goals. Unfortunately, parenting can buck all the trends. Sometimes, our children, whether adopted or biological, come with their own issues that can only be dealt with, successfully, with outside help and a daily dose of the Serenity Prayer.

This book provided me with a super template in which to bring my own stories to the World.

This book was super insightful! It gave me important information about things that I have wanted to do for myself and my life. The plus was the story of the author herself. It was a brilliant move to write on the topic of the book first and withhold her personal story till the end. After reading it I was honestly able to not pass any judgments on her for her decisions and I suppose that this is why she mapped out the book the way she did.

Having read Be the News, I believe I am better prepared to share our story and cope with the media we actually need. This book contains incredibly insightful and helpful information, but not so much that a novice like me feels confused or overwhelmed. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who wants to learn more about successful media interactions. I loved the humor sprinkled throughout this how-to manual.
