Descriptions du produit

Almost universally accepted as the group who defined pop and rock music as we know it better and more conclusively than any other act before or since, The Beatles had, of course, many strings to their bow. But head and shoulders above any of their other talents and skills was the quite incredible songwriting genius of Messrs Lennon and McCartney. Even before the boys had signed to EMI Records in 1962, John and Paul were creating the finest songbook ever composed in this idiom, a joyous body of work that would not only delight the world but would equally define modern music and provide a template for generations to come. This film investigates and discovers the story of The Beatles via their own music and in so doing reveals, in a way previously undocumented, just how this unlikely collective came to write the songs that made the whole world sing.

The Beatles In Their Own Write 9 juin 2014
Par S Riaz - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: DVD
I recently ordered this DVD, but before I review it I would like to point out that it has been previously released until the title Composing the Beatles Songbook: Lennon and McCartney 1957-1965. In fact, it even has the same extra's as that DVD. Now, this is a fabulous documentary, but it was a disappointment as I had already seen it. However, if you haven't, then this is very worth watching, but just beware you do not end up buying the same show twice.

Assuming you haven't already seen it, this is the first in a series of DVD's looking at Lennon and McCartney as songwriters both within, and after, the Beatles. This particular programme incorporates the time period of 1957-1965. A whole host of people are interviewed: Klaus Voorman, Barry Miles, Maureen Cleave, Paul Gambaccini, Chris Ingham, Allan Moore, Peter Doggett, Robert Christgou, Anthony DeCurtis, Johnny Rogan, Nigel Williamson and Steve Turner. These range from the editors of music magazines, broadcasters, journalists, those who have written about the Beatles and their friends, and they offer a whole host of insights into the most successful songwriting partnership of all time.

In the early works of the band, Lennon and McCartney were very much a two headed creative term; in the words of one interviewee. It was less "John and Paul" and more "Beatle music" that they were creating - enhancing each other's gifts and collaborating - and often singing - together. The fight for dominance within the band is also explored. Although John was seen as the `leader', it is interesting to note, for example, that most American viewers who tuned into the Ed Sullivan show had their first view of the Beatles with Paul singing lead on "All My Loving."

This fascinating documentary examines their influences, especially that of Dylan on John Lennon. It looks at how they began to find their own voice and examines several songs in detail, such as "Can't Buy Me Love," "I'm a Loser," "Help!", "Nowhere Man," "Norwegian Wood," "Michelle" and "Yesterday." There is also an interesting discussion on the songs they gave away to artists such as Peter and Gordon (which included Peter Asher, brother of Paul's then girlfriend Jane) and other members of the Brian Epstein NEM's stable, such as Billy J. Kramer and Cilla Black.

By the time this episode finishes, the Beatles are headed into the unknown, and innovative, middle Sixties. For anyone interested in the song writing partnership of Lennon and McCartney and what made them successful, this is a really interesting programme. Those interviewed have links with the band - they are not just a random panel - and their comments are valid and insightful. This disc also contains extras, including extended interviews with Barry Miles, Maureen Cleave, Klaus Voorman and Steve Turner and Chris Ingham discussing "We Can Work It Out."

I will be wary in the future, in case the same company repackages further DVD's and there is no mention that they had been previously released.

An Excellent Approach To An Interesting Facet 23 avril 2015
Par KJ - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: DVD
This is a very nice film about the songwriting arrangements and partnership of Paul & John- some quite amazing revelations including a musician showing on his own piano how they would copy each other and borrow from here, there and everywhere. But who doesn't in the field of songwriting - just that some do it far more skillfully than others - and L&M were the true masters.

Great footage and archive material throughout too - this isn't just an exercise in academia - although it is highly intelligent in its approach

Excellent Documentary 20 mars 2015

Format: DVD
A very detailed and interesting look at the relationship and writing partnership ( or not!) of Messrs Lennon & McCartney during the fist half of the Beatles career (although the film begins way before 'The Beatles' were formed...)
A very worthwhile and interesting film.
