Commentaries of a master beekeeper 7 juillet 2013
Par Rod M. Holland - Publié sur Amazon.com
Format: Broché
This is not a book for beginners, or possibly not even journeymen. This is observations and considerations of a master beekeeper as he's plied his craft over 60 odd years (at the time he wrote the book). The significance of the book is that brother Adam bred the noted Buckfast honey bee, and has spent a very long lifetime doing it (given he died in 1996 at the age of 98). What you get in this book are primarily his thoughts on apiary management and queen rearing and selection. The techniques he outlines are familiar to most beekeepers, and the discussion he gives is generally on why he considers these methods optimal for the abbey's situation, as well as discussion on other methods he'd tried and why he discontinued them.

Who should read this: Historians of beekeeping and beekeepers who are beginning to encompass all areas of their craft, especially queen rearing.

Don't expect anything earth shattering, just concise and well thought out observations of one of the most noted master beekeepers.

Good Book loaded with Inspiration 30 septembre 2013

If you are looking for a different method of beekeeping this is a very good book. Brother Adams is filled with knowledge and didn't just use guess work. He experimented and did his homework. I found it very interesting that he places bees from different colonies together so quickly because of his belief that bees react to behavior- not scent. Understanding differences in bee behavior, even between races, has done so much to help me when requeening and combining colonies of my own. I have only touched on one section of the book that I liked, but there's so much more. The only flaw that I can think of is that I'd like it to go a little deeper. For instance, it gives hive measurements, but not for the frames/spacers. Although he discusses the feeders. I'd like to know more about them. I'd also like to know more about how much honey is left on the hives in the fall to get them through the Winter. All-in-all, a wealth of information in this book and I would definitely recommend it to any experienced beekeeper!

Interesting if you keep bees 8 juin 2013

I found this one an interesting read and would not rate it as a beginning bee keepers how to start book. I would say even if you don't keep bees it's a good read on the subject and interesting to compare for the intermediate bee keeper. It does have some interesting information on mead making, history of the advancement of this bee breeding line. Just a entertaining read all told.

Brother Adam's insights into beekeeping are defiantly worth the read. Been keeping bees for close to 7 years now. This book is an excellent reference for the experienced beekeeper as well as a treasure trove of knowledge for the beginning to intermediate.
