5.0 étoiles sur 5 Perhaps the best book on the subject ever... 7 janvier 2006

I've experimented with both classical and flamenco guitar over the years, but when I discovered this series of books 1 - 3 on contemporary-fingerstyle guitar, I knew that I'd finally found my niche.

The notation and tab are first-rate with helpful fingering notation for the beginner. There's plenty of theory and a wealth of techniques, tips and tricks to make sure that the would-be guitarist forms the correct guitar habits right from the get go. Unlike lesser fingersytle-guitar books, this one has pieces that, although challenging, because of their beauty and uniqueness, inspire you to practice regularly.

The vast diversity of styles is also refreshing, for some books tend to bog down in insulting oversimplicity and/or wallow in too many moody/broody "Narada-esque/" songs that all tend to sound the same and/or sound like something from a third-grade piano recital. Maybe your mom will tell you that you sound great, but...

Now I'm curious to see if their wealth of books on other guitar styles is of an equal caliber.

My only gripe is with AMAZON'S edit-a-review feature: Hey AMAZON!!! How about actually acknowledging a typo edit once this century!

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Great series 28 novembre 2005

I actually got hold of the intermediate book first, but realised it would be worth starting at the beginning. I've got a few years experience in a variety of styles and wanted a structured course in fingerstyle. The thing that struck me about both the Intermediate course and this one is that they both have some really enjoyable pieces in them. They just sound great. Even the beginning one started with a really nice little piece right up front. It certainly wasn't easy, even from the start, but well worth it. I'd recommend getting a basic course on guitar (or some lessons) first if you've never played before, but if you know a few chords and some of the basics, this will be a challenging and enjoyable course.

5.0 étoiles sur 5 LOVE this book - exercises, songs, and THEORY that I actually understood 4 mars 2008

I've felt so obtuse about music theory, I just didn't understand; root notes, 1-3-5 for chords, how do you get a minor chord, why do I care, and so on. This is the book, with its clear descriptions, wonderful diagrams, and plain language, that gave me my "Helen Keller" moment: I GET it!

Well, I assume I am grasping the most rudimentary principles, but still, I am just thrilled. I actually sat down and figured out the chords I know on the guitar to see if they fit what theory said they should be, and lo and behold, they were right! Then I sat down and calculated the major and minor scales building on various notes, and those were right too! It all makes sense, and I am so happy to be rid of that "oh, how boring, I'll never get this" feeling I had.

The tabulature is also wonderful in this book, you get directions for your right and left fingers, and the notes are shown as well for those who like to practice reading music. Right now I am still working on exercises, but I expect to work on the songs (which, based on the CD, are also great) in the next week or so.

One more thing, pictures and brief blurbs of various guitarists are interspersed throughout the book. I found this quite interesting, and was able to YouTube the ones I was unfamiliar with to broaden my appreciation for fingerpicking.

addn: I uploaded a video on YouTube with a song from this book; the link won't work in an Amazon review, but search for guitar Lou Manzi and my video will come up.

4.0 étoiles sur 5 Excellent fingerstyle instruction and enjoyable music to play 25 mai 2006

If you are looking to get started in Fingerstyle, this is a great resource. It starts out with some simple patterns, progresses to slightly trickier timing. The next step is to combime the patterns into very enjoyable etudes. The accompanying CD illustrates how beautifully musical these exercises can be.

The music offered is a good variety of instumentals: folky, blues, ragtime, bass melody, harp-style and more.

I bought this book/CD for an alternative to the other fingerstyle lessons I have that feature the boom-chuck sound of country blues. Some of the music in this book also features an alternating thumb-picked bass, but the bass lines are more integrated into the music, so it is an excellent change for me - just what I wanted.

When I finish working through this book, I will definitely buy the intermediate part of the series.

2.0 étoiles sur 5 Not my favorite 15 janvier 2012

I've used many guitar books over the last 15 years and I usually LOVE them. This one started off too advanced with hard to follow exercises, hard chords. The exercises got easier instead of harder, so the sequence seemed unnatural. I couldn't find fingering for the left hand, or not in logical place anyway. I personally didn't like this book, but others seem to like.
